Stockpiling vacuum packed food in case of war

My friends husband has bought a couple of thousand pound worth of vacuum packed food in case there of an imminent war... Euro crisis, Syria and Middle east problems... China and Russia power dynamic. What do you think? Is this sensible or deluded? I would have said deluded but I don't want to be dismissive of her and her husband. He does quite a lot of research but not sure it's from valid sources.

Yes he likes sci do and war books...

OP posts:
EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:44

Should she be worried about him?

"Oh Fuck Ruck Sack"

For when the Zombies come

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:46

I know this sounds like a ridiculous op, but I am concerned about his mental health but dont want to overreact.

The books could be where he's getting his ideas from. But, when I read it I know it's fiction, not a warning. Spending "a couple of thousand" pounds is quite an investment. He's serious about this. Confused

balotelli · 25/07/2012 21:47

Unlikely to be a war on that sort of scale.

Polar Shift is more likely. Google it and try not to be scared shitless!!! and It WILL happen, just not sure when.

There is a whole community in USA who are stockpilling food, water, weapons etc ready for the 'coming global conflict' but then again the yanks are usually bonkers anyway Grin

MorrisZapp · 25/07/2012 21:49

Medicaments :)

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/07/2012 21:49

on the whole, I would be worrying about his mental health too, OP. That's a lot of anxiety he's dealing with, at the very least.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:49

That's probably we're he's getting it balotelli...

I don't know. There is something to be said for disaster preparedness. Where I grew up, we had loads of extreme weather and it was just common sense to keep lots of extra non perishable food and gallons of fresh water as well as spare cash and tons of batteries. We had a generator to run our fridge and the well, because if we didn't have power, we didn't have water or any way of cooking food other than our BBQ.

It doesn't even really have to be anything as big as war or nuclear fallout. Look at all the NatWest heartache a few weeks ago. Or if the gov't doesn't get off it's arse and start building more power plants, we'll have rolling power outages in 15 years.

I don't think there's any harm in being prepared for emergencies as long as it doesn't turn into an obsession like hiddenhome described.

lemonpie7 · 25/07/2012 21:50

I have just over a weeks supply of food and water in a n upstairs cupboard. + torch, radio, lots of tin foil, water purification tablets, dynamos, window tape. I would hope most "situations" would be sorted in under a week, and if not, then it wouldn't make uch difference how much I'd stored.

Am I the only one?

Also have an "immediate evacuation bag" packed, one set of clothes each, juice cartons, buiscuits, radio, torch, groundsheet, pack of cards etc. needs repacking every year.

No weapons!

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:51

He's not going to take kindly to being approached on the subject... He thinks we are all uneducated insight less idiots.

OP posts:
RambleOn · 25/07/2012 21:52

Don't be concerned about his mental health! He is actually addressing a legitimate concern. They say that we are only 3 meals away from anarchy, society is so reliant on the supermarkets (and oil supply) that a disruption in food supply could result in civil disorder and food deprivation.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 25/07/2012 21:52

Omg ballotelli, will it be like the day after tomorrow? That film scares the shit out of me. But jake gyllenhall is proper fit in it though... Grin

NotLikeThatYouWont · 25/07/2012 21:53

I do have a stockpile, but not one like that - it's because we live in a fairly remote area and sometimes can't get out for a few days in winter. Also, our income fluctuates a bit, and stockpiling in good times cuts our grocery bill when things are harder.

TBH, unless he's going to go the whole survivalist hog and buy weapons, it would all be looted by his ravenous neighbours once people noticed that they weren't starving. If the lack of clean water and medicines hadn't got him first.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:54

See ramble... Thats where he's coming from, he has a child he wants to protect. Maybe he's not thinking war, maybe he's just thinking a temporary collapse of food supply?

OP posts:
catus · 25/07/2012 21:56

lemonpie. I'm impressed! I'm way too lazy to have that level of preparedness!
OP. Has he lived through war or persecution as a child, or did his parents? A friend of mine is married to a lebanese wife, and she just accepts the possibility of war as a matter of fact. She knows bombs could start being dropped on her and her family at any time, and they would have to look for shelter. She is not a paranoid person, but that's what she knows.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:56

That was my exact point to his wife, notlikeyouwont.

OP posts:
RambleOn · 25/07/2012 21:57

Buying some vac packed food doesn't constitute an obsession. I know people (seriously!) who have prepared boarding for the insides of all of their windows, which block out light and prevent people breaking in. This is to protect their 2 years worth of stashed food/medicine/etc. They even deliberately bought a house with a well in the basement.

What they intend to do with their poo though, I have no idea Grin

GnomeDePlume · 25/07/2012 21:57

On the whole it is probably harmless though I would turn down dinner invitations as this stuff is likely to be short dated MOD surplus and designed to be nuritious rather than tasty.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:58

He hasn't lived through any persecution but he is extremely intelligent and takes things to extremes. I think he is honestly trying to help, I don't honk he's deluded but I worry that he might be and we are all missing the bigger picture and could help him. Am I overreacting?

OP posts:
EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:59

It's not going to taste good is it? :)

OP posts:
hiddenhome · 25/07/2012 22:00

dh has this sort of mentality. His father used to be involved in Civil Defence back in the 80s and dh was brought up with a lot of paranoia about a nuclear attack. He tends to stockpile stuff, but not to the extent of the op. I quite admire his Protect and Survive mentality, but if he started dressing up like Rambo I wouldn't be happy.

balotelli · 25/07/2012 22:00

The idea of Polar SHift scares the crap out of me.

It happens every 600,000 years but the last time it happened was approx 785,000 years ago so is due very soon and the earth is apparently showing the first signs of it.

When it happens the best case scenario is that all communications and power is down for a month or so, compasses and gps wont work at all, ever again, animals will become very comfused and the majority of us will survive. It will mean that the north and south pole relocate and could end up anywhere. Yes UK could be at the southpole.

Worst case the electromagnetic disruption could cause all the nuclear weapons to detonate without warning!!!

JumpingThroughHoops · 25/07/2012 22:01

Random question coming up - was it this forum (or another place full of total loons Grin) who kept their children home the day the Large Hadron Collider fired up 'coz the world was going to end? There are some very neurotic people out there.
