Stockpiling vacuum packed food in case of war

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:29

My friends husband has bought a couple of thousand pound worth of vacuum packed food in case there of an imminent war... Euro crisis, Syria and Middle east problems... China and Russia power dynamic. What do you think? Is this sensible or deluded? I would have said deluded but I don't want to be dismissive of her and her husband. He does quite a lot of research but not sure it's from valid sources.

a Couple of thousand poundsworth of vac-packed food is one up from the OFRS, though.

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/07/2012 22:01

bonk? honk? Your predictive text really doesn't like the word think, does it? Grin

" He thinks we are all uneducated insight less idiots."
" he is extremely intelligent and takes things to extremes"
Hmm. Could he be on the Autistic Spectrum?

cozietoesie · 25/07/2012 22:02

I think that the likelihood of me having to meet a disaster is - appreciable. I'm glad my parents are gone now.

I'll just try to call it a day, I think. I worry sometimes about how to end it (not how to live in the cellar) and how to end it for the animals in particular. There you go.

catus · 25/07/2012 22:03

I would say wait and see. At this stage, it doesn't sound too extreme. It could all be harmless. But if things escalate, and you feel he is getting obssessed, maybe try to voice your concerns (good luck with that though!).

cozietoesie · 25/07/2012 22:03

For those of you who are laughing, take a look at Yellowstone.

laudinum · 25/07/2012 22:03

Has your friend voiced concern about her dh?

It does sound like rather extreme behaviour especially 2K worth of food.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 22:03

He reads the same stuff as you balotelli. I think he is just trying to protect? Maybe we should try and help him :)

VivaLeBeaver · 25/07/2012 22:04

My brother keeps muttering about yellowstone, that it's going to blow up and the world will end. Hmm

balotelli · 25/07/2012 22:05

Maybe I should have more that 3 cans of beans int the cupboard!!!

Have just bought 360 loo rolls so my arse is covered!!

Latara · 25/07/2012 22:06

Some of my especially religious Muslim & Christian FB friends & colleagues seriously believe it's the 'End Times'... one Muslim FB friend even linked to a depressing song with the cheerful lyrics, 'it's time to choose, heaven or hell??'

(Tempted to reply that Hell is slightly more appealing. I mean I think Heaven would be quite boring with all the do-gooders.

Plus who gets to go up there? Christians or Muslims or both or none??

But I don't like to offend; so will leave FB friend to happily believe he is off to heaven whenever God / Allah decides it's time..)

So with all the religious 'End Timers' & conspiracy theorists & the people who believe the world ends in 2012 (Mayan calendar says so therefore MUST be true of course) - i can see why the friends' DP is getting a bit paranoid about war / apocalypse etc.

But if he starts getting very obsessive about it & it's stopping him enjoying life; then your friend should have a word with their GP maybe... after all humans have been wrongly predicting their dooom with fatalistic glee regularly since the beginning of time.

He's more likely to have a heart attack worrying about wars than to get killed in one!!

RambleOn · 25/07/2012 22:06

As an aside, a religious group (Latter Day Saints?) are required by their church to be prepared to this level.

balotelli · 25/07/2012 22:06

Viva. I read about the super volcano under Yellowstone and the fact that it is likely to erupt soon wiping out most of the western world!!!

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 22:08

He's an atheist.

OP posts:
GnomeDePlume · 25/07/2012 22:08

If Yellowstone does blow a packet soup isnt going to help is it?

VivaLeBeaver · 25/07/2012 22:09

Yes, but then professional volcano people say it won't erupt in the next 10,000 years.

figwit · 25/07/2012 22:09

I don't like these threads, am still eating my way through my swine flu emergency supplies and still drinking bottled water put aside so I didn't have to use the standpipes this summer

cozietoesie · 25/07/2012 22:11

Sorry, balotelli. I should have made that Yelllowstone and Long Valley. I don't think we're immune to natural disasters. My concern is how to sort out the animals and ourselves quickly if something awful happens. 50 years ago, people had shotguns. Now, all I have is some paracetamol.

lemonpie7 · 25/07/2012 22:12

There are so many super volcanos, geological phenomana, unpredictable events, etc, they have happened before, and life still exists on Earth, doesn't it? The next one might not happen in this particular million years! I don't tendto worry about the mega apocolypse, I do try and be reasonable prepared for a little local anarchy. Maybe because you can prepare for the latter, but not realy the other .

Latara · 25/07/2012 22:14

There is one positive side to war (just one).... MEN IN UNIFORM Grin

SecretPlansAndCleverTricks · 25/07/2012 22:16

I would think that the first rule of survivalism might be, like, 'don't tell anyone you have a big stash of food'

fail. Grin

OlympicRelay · 25/07/2012 22:25

I read one of these threads before. Someone came on saying they used to work for the government, as part of her job she was given a list of things to hoard in case of society breaking down.

ClassFree · 25/07/2012 22:37

We, as a family, are reasonably prepared. We live in Canada, and deal with weather extremes, long power outages, risky long distance travel, and poor cell coverage. It doesn't take a lot, a forest fire, hurricane, blizzard, landslide, whatever... to cut off our chances to go to the store. We can't afford to leave it to the last minute, or we could end up very hungry!Grin
We keep a bug-out box (a 68 L tote) with emergency supplies in the coat cupboard by the door. We carry a first aid kit, and basic survival supplies in the truck. We also have a prepared plan that the family uses, so that if we are separated, each of us knows what to do.
We keep a fair bit of day to day essentials on hand, like food, drinks, paper goods and the like. We also have bottled water, and a purifier.
Being prepared doesn't mean you are crazy, or have a mental illness. Not being prepared doesn't mean you are crazy either, but it can leave you in a really bad spot, at the worst possible time.

Latara · 25/07/2012 22:40

List of things to hoard in case of war:

An Army, Navy & RAF.

Ok may be difficult to fit them all into my back garden... perhaps a small squad of SAS men would be more realistic. Hello, Chris Ryan.... Grin

OlympicRelay · 25/07/2012 22:47

If I remember from the other thread, you need water, food, heat source to cook with and for cold weather, clothes and medication.

Latara · 25/07/2012 22:50

No, Olympic. You just need your own army. strokes Persian cat like Bond villainess
