to think that people shouldn't have bonfires on hot summer nights?

I woke up at 2am this morning, because I could smell smoke. I realised that one of the neighbours was having a bonfire. I'd opened all the upstairs windows, because it was so flipping hot, and I'm heavily pregnant so struggle to sleep at the best of times at the moment. The whole of our upstairs reeked of bonfire, so I had to close all the windows. I know it's not likely to happen again for a while, as presumably the culprit has now got rid of whatever waste they needed to burn. Also, at least they didn't do it it in the day when everyone had their washing on the line. This wasn't the first time they done it though. Why do they even need a bonfire in the first place- we have a good garden waste collection scheme going on around here!! Or surely they could have waited til we get a bit of cooler weather (which, no doubt, won't be long!).

Up to them if they want to have a bonfire. However they should have let you know.

Next door used to do it when we had our washing on the line Angry ignorant sods

The people living behind us used to do this. Only during the day, for several days running and they'd also burn things that caused thick black smoke. When the fence blew down, you guessed it, they burned it instead of taking it to the tip in their large car. Then they got chickens, including several cockerels. All the neighbours are moving.....

YANBU. For open windows, and because in this weather I have been known to leave washing hung up overnight to dry off first thing.

I hate bonfires! Personally I think there's no need to have them as waste can be taken to the dump to be composted or recycled, and there's even Freecycle which is an organisation with national groups whose aim it is to keep useful stuff out of landfill. It's amazing what people will collect from you (when I took down a knackered wooden fence someone collected it to make a chicken house out of!) which saves a trip to the dump too.

Gets right on my pip. First gorgeous day in forever and some arse had a fire going all day here. Washing out and windows open too, bah!
