To think that this is not the way you train a dog?

The cat thread reminded me.

My dbf told me at the weekend that his uncle has a new jack russell and is going to dog training as the dog is growling and snapping at people.

Apparantly the dog trainer has told him to roll up a newspaper and smack the dog on the nose when it growls.

I think this is complete bull, I remember dong dog training quite a few years ago I admit and we were told never ever to hit as this will make the dog nervious and more likely to snap.

Depends on what he wants the dog to train to do. If he wants to train the dog to snap and growl more, he is going about it the right way. Poor dog.

Hm, that should have been 'Depends on what he wants to train the dog to do', I think. (It's too bloody hot.)

Sorry I don't know why I said I admit I think I was gong to type somthing else.

We were told to never ever 'tap' a dog as it will only make the dog flinch and more likely to bite.

Sorry. Grin I've got the flu, I want the bloody sun to go and some lovely rain clouds. A nice heavy downpour would be just the thing now. Grin

He needs to go onto the JR forums, JR's need strong leadership and the correct handling.

He is in danger of creating a dog that will have to be put down because it won't be suitable for re-homing.

He needs to follow the advice over exercise, as skimp on this and the dog will be snappy, through boredom.

birds I did try to offer dbf a few pointers although I doubt that it will be passed on.

My mum and I trained an over excited 9 month old rottweiler without ever hitting or tapping as this was a no go, my mums had her for 12 years now with no problems. I just despair at why some people even get pets I have a feeling that this pet won't last very long.

The individual breed forums are good, as different tactics work on different types of dogs.

You have to enjoy the traits of the breed that you have picked to get the most out of your dog and JR's are strong minded, but their energy and enthusiasm can be tapped into.
