to wonder if anyone in real life actually talks like this?

I am having a lazy t'internet morning! When browsing various forums (fora sounds a bit daft to me even if it is 'correct') it has occured to me that people seem to type things that I have never heard anyone say.

I have never heard a real person say 'one' when chatting. As in 'what does one do in these situations?' or 'one wonders if it is necessary' etc etc.

or gosh, gracious (as an exclamation), fora etc. lots of things really.

Is this because people use words or terms online that they don't in real life or is it because I and all my friends are terribly common? Smile

I could never type fora, it seems a very poncey word.

Megatron · 23/07/2012 10:37

Ah but apparently it is the term one should use. If you want to sound like a twat of course. Smile

One would say forums ,and make someone on MN teeth itch Grin

They seem to have itchy teeth a lot on MN.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 23/07/2012 10:40

I say gosh. Blush
I also swear like a trooper when there's no little ears about. Grin

MissAnnersley · 23/07/2012 10:41

I say 'gosh' too. And things like blimey and crikey.

SchrodingersMew · 23/07/2012 10:41

I say "gosh, gracious (goodness, gracious me!) and I also say one.

I thought lots of people said these words, far better than in certain situations than swearing or using common slang.

honeytea · 23/07/2012 10:42

My grandma uses "one" and "gosh" but I don't think she writes on forums, it's there a nansnet?

Mrsjay · 23/07/2012 10:42

I dont think my teeth have ever itched well maybe If i have had a really sweet cake but i never seen anybody anywhere scratching their itchy teeth Grin

RuleBritannia · 23/07/2012 10:42

I use 'gosh' and 'one' and 'jolly' as in 'jolly good'

MrsMangoBiscuit · 23/07/2012 10:42

I good, I'm not the only gosh user! :)

usualsuspect · 23/07/2012 10:42

I use a lot of common slang, I type how I talk. It is a chat forum after all.

SchrodingersMew · 23/07/2012 10:43

Sorry, I should have previewed that post. Blush

*I say "gosh, gracious (goodness, gracious me!)" and I also say "one".

I had thought lots of people use these words, it's far better in certain situations than swearing or using common slang.*

Sorry about that.

Mrsjay · 23/07/2012 10:43

I am common so the language and words I type will be common,

MrsMangoBiscuit · 23/07/2012 10:43

honeytea, there is Gransnet if that's any use? Grin

edam · 23/07/2012 10:44

I say gosh and golly occasionally. Swear quite a lot as well, though! Fora is just pretentious - everyday conversation is not a Latin exam (and I'm a self-confessed pedant and an editor IRL). Always amusing when someone tries to be clever and gets it wrong, such as saying 'octopi' - it's Greek, not Latin, so if you want to be really pedantic it should be octopodes. But only a twat would say that.

PooPooInMyToes · 23/07/2012 10:45

I say gosh now. I never used to, i used to have a potty mouth and had to find something to replace all the swearing with once I had children, so gosh it was!

Mrsjay · 23/07/2012 10:45

I thought fora meant they had forgotten a space like for a Blush what does it mean

PooPooInMyToes · 23/07/2012 10:45

And the only person who says "one" is the queen.

edam · 23/07/2012 10:45

plural of forum if you want to sound like a twat.

usualsuspect · 23/07/2012 10:46

Octopodes is a great word, I might try and use that in a post to show off

MrsMangoBiscuit · 23/07/2012 10:46

So how should I say "more than one octopus"? Confused

honeytea · 23/07/2012 10:46

Mrsmango I will point her in that direction thankyou! ;)

edam · 23/07/2012 10:46

what forums are you on where people say 'one', btw? Genteelanddesperatetoproveit. com?

GnocchiNineDoors · 23/07/2012 10:46

I say 'gracious' and also 'glorious' which my ILs mock me for. Blush

No reason, they are just the right word, to me, to use in certain situations.

I do swear, but I just also use words like the above too.

I never say 'what would one do?' and cannot STAND people referring to themselves in the third person.

edam · 23/07/2012 10:47

octopuses. Octopi is wrong and octopodes is incredibly pretentious unless you are correcting a pretentious person who says octopi. Grin
