Are YOU the MNer who washed my chicken last night?

So, namechanged, obviously, but really want to get opinions. I strongly suspect the other party is a MNer from what happened so if this was you, hopefully this thread will vindicate me!

Last night, went to a friend for dinner, just the two of us. I am pregnant so we were just going to have dinner in and a gossip. She was doing chicken stir fry, took the chicken out of the fridge, opened it and made a face. I asked what was wrong, she said it smelled a bit funny. I had a smell and agreed, not too bad but definately not right. Just as I was about to suggest ordering a pizza, she said that the juices go off before the actual meat and she would just rinse it and it would be fine! I should have bought it up at the time, but was too chicken (geddit?) but she MUST be a MNer, this is the only place I have heard advice like this!

The chicken was in date but I said that I would not eat it. I said I was worried what with being pregnant. She did not seem too put out but I did say that if it had been just her, she would have eaten it, making me feel a bit precious. We did get a pizza.

WIBU. And are you that MNer?

VivaLeBeaver · 22/07/2012 16:09

I'd have binned it and last week I ate a 5 day old chicken curry (takeaway curry) so am not precious.

frustratedpants · 22/07/2012 16:12

Yukola. Hmm
Not me anyhoo.who are these people that rinse mince?

ChickenWashingDilemma · 22/07/2012 16:13

Mmmmm, 5 day old curry, after baby is born I will be able to eat all the out of date food I like!

I may have eaten something like that myself, but I don't think that even if I was willing to brave it, I would have served it to someone else!

Samantha I don't think it sounds angry. Just wondering whether I was being unreasonable to get a pizza instead of eating what my host was offering. Not angry or upset about it, just hearing about washing the chicken made me laugh inside.

Oh def not being unreasonable if you are pregnant!

I'd have Cooked it for my own family but we have guts of iron, I wouldn't have served it to anyone else in case they were more delicate of digestion.

TapirBackRider · 22/07/2012 16:19

Yanbu - It's not worth taking chances with smelly chicken in or out of date; I've had the food poisoning to prove it.

Rinsing a chicken wouldn't get rid of the bacteria .... Only cooking it at high temps .

Personally, if it smells, ESPECIALLY chicken, I don't risk it

Yuk. You don't mess about with chicken. If it smells - it goes!

Nuttyprofessor · 22/07/2012 20:26

If the chicken was vacuum packed and the vacuum is tight and hasn't expanded it won't be off. A residual smell is normal, smells stronger when you are pregnant. You should not wash poultry as you risk splashing dangerous bacteria on work tops taps and sink.

When pregnant take no risks at all.

I agree with my DF "when in doubt chuck it out."

JeezyPeeps · 22/07/2012 20:29

It was me that said that and no, I didn't cook for you last night!

Inneedofbrandy · 22/07/2012 20:30

I dont ever wash my meat but my childrens father and me used to argue constantly who was right about this, might of had something to do with he's jamaican though...

BlackholesAndRevelations · 22/07/2012 20:32

It was my thread about chicken! Grin but I can assure you I didn't/don't/ won't wash chicken!

By the way- we all ate it and lived to tell the tale (but I'm sure your friend would have understood, as you're pregnant)

c4rnsi1lk · 22/07/2012 20:36

ewwww that's nasty

MrsBonkers · 22/07/2012 21:50

No, I'M Sparticus!

SamanthaStormer · 22/07/2012 21:56

Rinsing a chicken?! I'm no meat expert (live with a veggie so pretty clueless, really! Grin ) but I thought you weren't supposed to wash chicken as it could spread bacteria?
As if doing that would make 'off' chicken OK anyway Hmm
It would still have bacteria on it.
