to wonder why a D must be prefixed to unnecessary family members?

We all know that SIL is your sister in law. Would that not suffice? What's with all this D business? I do get it for DS/DD... DH (barf).

I was reading a post about DGMIL the other day. I was totally irritated.

Bit fluffy for MN innit?!

I don't have unnecessary family members, all of mine are essential.
I do take your point about the D though, it is something that has never been satisfactorily explained in the whole three years or so that I've been on MN.
It is a perenial topic.

Aw how sweet.

I meant unnecessarily. We know SIL is an SIL. I'm pretty sure you don't need a D to reinforce that (or your love for them).

DH is so cringey. I don't have a husband yet, but think I will totally struggle to type that when it comes to it.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/07/2012 13:13

I don't even think about it anymore. I use the D even when I'm not thinking the person is particularly D to me at the time. :)

Trills · 22/07/2012 13:15

I don't read D as dear or darling, I just read DH as "my husband" or DS as "my son" or DS2 as "my second-oldest son". It's an arbitrary shorthand.

You're right, SIL doesn't need extra letters.

I'm not really sure that it's a question of reasonableness though.

FunnysInLaJardin · 22/07/2012 13:17

I don't even think that I am saying Dear Husband, just that his name is DH and when you've fallen out with him his name is H. Bit like calling him MW which are his initials when talking to RL friends on tinternet

Waspie · 22/07/2012 13:21

I'd much prefer to see "DH" than the fucking awful "hubbie", "hubs" or "man shape" - these make my teeth itch and my right eye twitch uncontrollably!

MintyMojito · 22/07/2012 13:22

Of course I love him Samantha! Lordy I'd not put up his computers, bad taste in tv and 4am back pokes if I didn't.

I understand that it'd be silly writing H/D/S, hence understanding the D. But DGDIL is pushing it a bit, no? Smile

I agree with DTrills.

MintyMojito · 22/07/2012 13:24

Hubs and hubbie don't even make sense. He should be husby at least... does becoming a wife make you illiterate for goodness sake? Wink

Waspie · 22/07/2012 13:24

...I do have difficulties with some of the abbreviations though - BF can mean breast fed/feeding, best friend or boy friend. When all three crop up in an OP life, for the terminally confused like me, gets complicated Smile

Totally chilled. Thanks for the brew! We are not married, but we are engaged, therefore I know I'll be married to him.... so obviously I love him.

Oh stop it Samantha you're confusing me!

I've always assumed that the 'dear' was lightly ironic..

MintyMojito · 22/07/2012 13:36

Rhetorician - I think I could manage to use it ironically.

Samantha - my goodness you overthink things Wink. Yes penis shaped back pokes, bane of my life. He's perfected them in his sleep now so he doesn't get disturbed when the answer is 'fuck off'. That's usually me up til the alarm goes off though.

H and the girls my parents, SIL, her DCs and my lovely late MIL are certainly DH, DD, DM, Ddad and DMIL. Unfortunatly, I don't like DSILs husband and so he is generally just BILWink

MintyMojito · 22/07/2012 13:45

I'm too old for sex at 4am when I have to be up at 6.45 am for work, to get my son ready for the childminder and make myself look vaguely presentable. I need sleep!

Blow job every day! I better not show him this post and that people are actually like that IRL. I told him it was all made up by the porn industry specifically to put me to shame. Grin
