Aibu to tell my neighbour to piss off with her little comments

i live in an apartment and twice today my neighbour has felt the need to comment on my smoking. I do not leave cig end anywhere and I smoke away from the building but she still feels the need to have a dig. First time she came put with a bag for the bin and told me that I would be loaded if I did not spend money on cigarettes. Second time she came back from walking the dog and said I can hardly see you through that cloud of smoke. I really feel like telling her to piss off. She is such an annoying bat

I wouldn't bother, ignoring her and not rising to the bait would get the point across just as well.

gamerwidow · 21/07/2012 21:24

Irritating but rise above it and you get to be smug in the knowledge that you keep the moral high ground.

picnicbasketcase · 21/07/2012 21:25

Is she an ex smoker, they are more likely to make smug digs at people who haven't stopped

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/07/2012 21:26

When I smoked comments like that made me want one all the more!

AgentZigzag · 21/07/2012 21:29

It is irritating when someone with no authority over you whatsoever thinks they've got a right to stick their oar in.

AgentZigzag · 21/07/2012 21:30

And that you're going to listen and change your ways because they've spoken!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 21/07/2012 21:40

It would annoy the hell out of me, too. I am an ex smoker but I would never say that to a smoker because I know how fucking hard it is to stop. I only stopped because I fell pregnant and was quite ill initially.

YANBU. If I think of a witty retort you could make, I will let you know! Grin

LeanderBear · 21/07/2012 22:06

YANBU, can't you just blow some magnificent smoke rings in her face next time.

oooo0000OOOOOO

I have never smoked but I wouldn't say something this rude to someone.

fluffiphlox · 21/07/2012 22:09

When I last looked they were £7 + per packet so I think youre mad for smoking but I think you should ignore her comments.

GnomeDePlume · 21/07/2012 22:46

As a small thought, is it possible that your smoke is blowing into her home? My neighbours smoke outside as they arent allowed to smoke inside. This means I cant open one of my sitting room windows. My DD has said that the smoke goes straight up and into her room.

WorraLiberty · 21/07/2012 22:49

If a miniscule bit of smoke that has been diluted by the outside air is making its way into her home, she should say so.

There's no excuse for the digs imo.

AgentZigzag · 21/07/2012 22:53

She doesn't seem the sort to not say anything Gnome.

Have you said anything to your neighbours?

GnomeDePlume · 21/07/2012 22:58

I dont say anything to my neighbours because I know that we will be here long after the neighbours have moved on and life is too short.

If I were to suffer from asthma or have a different life view then I would probably be less tolerant.

AgentZigzag · 21/07/2012 23:46

Don't blame you Gnome, I try to take the same tack.

Nothing worse than living next door to people you've fallen out with, it's difficult to bring some things up and it not to affect how you are with each other.

Triffiddealer · 22/07/2012 00:22

God I hate smoking - evil drug, peddled by evil American drug lords enslaving the third world. A large part of my day job involves encouraging people not to spend their hard-earned wages on the drug that will kill them for no obvious upside.

But if I were you, I'd smoke another 20 a day and puff them all towards her fucking door. If there is one thing I hate more than evil American drug pushers it's sanctimonious fucking sarky neighbours (double checks it's AIBU and not relationships or legal).

LucieMay · 22/07/2012 00:55

Ask her outright if it affects her, eg is it blowing into her room. She may be trying to make a point. However if it isn't affecting her in anyway I'd just ignore her completely. Don't rise to it. Perhaps go out for a fag with your iPod and headphones on to block her out!

Whiteworm · 22/07/2012 01:03

Blank her. If you want to smoke and are not blowing it into her place or leaving butts everywhere. She can fuck off imo.

AgentZigzag · 22/07/2012 01:30

I love people who have the conviction to abandon their principles just to prove a point Triffid Grin
