AIBU To just want 10 minutes to myself

It's Friday, I've had a hell of a week at work and I'm knackered. I came home, sat on the sofa, no TV and just wanted to chill with a cup of tea before starting to do dinner. Told DH and DS3, 12 years old, who were the only other people in the house, "Just give me 10 minutes to get my head together."

So, variously I had DS3 wanting the TV on. So he put it on and then walked off out of the room. Some stupid bloody cartoon blaring away to itself. So I turn the TV off.

DH came into the room, turned the main light on (It wasn't dark) then walked out again. So I turn the light off. He comes in and turns it on again, then turns the radio on, loudly, on the TV. Then buggers off again. So I turn it off.

Then, dogs go beserk, crash goes the front door and my bloody mother just walked in, without a by your leave, shrieking "Yoo Hoo" at the top of her voice. Her explanation "Oh, I just thought I'd drop in on the way past. The door was on the latch" She lives 20 minutes away, and must have diverted to come to my house.

So I am now sat here, grumpy, with a banging headache, thinking just leave me the fuck alone for 10 sodding minutes. Angry

take your cup of tea up to your bedroom and hide in there for 10 minutes

CamperWidow · 20/07/2012 20:05

YANBU. Is there another room you can escape to? Hole away in the bedroom or bathroom?

ModreB · 20/07/2012 20:08

No, because DH is sat on the bed playing his guitar. After turning on the radio again and walking off.

No other room apart from the kitchen, we have only a small house so I might as well go and sort out the dinner. Sigh.

Next time go to a cafe with a magazine for half an hour on your way home. Bliss.

iklboo · 20/07/2012 20:12

I sometimes fantasise about 'having to go away with work' & booking myself into a £19 Travelodge room from earliest booking in time to kicking out time the next day. Just me, some wine, music & a good book.

Can you lock yourself in the bathroom / bedroom for a bit?

bejeezus · 20/07/2012 20:12

Climb out the bathroom window and go to the pub/ sit in the shed?

Next time you want peace, move the sofa in front of the living room door, so no one can get in...

Or, run away from home

ThisIsNotWhatIWasAfter · 20/07/2012 20:16

Do you have a garden? I hide in mine every chance i get even in the rain

Bigtrousers · 20/07/2012 20:16

Have a nice hot bath.

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/07/2012 20:25

I second the nice hot bath. And leaving the pair of them to see to their own dinner.

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 20/07/2012 20:27

yanbu

But when I get like this, I think of all the lonely people who live alone and would give anything to have a house full of life.

OAM2009 · 20/07/2012 20:28

YANBU!!!

How annoying! You are a better person than me tho, I would have contributed to my own headache by SCREAMING at everyone! Angry

Good suggestions on here - really think magazine and cafe on way home is the way to go! Smile

iklboo, can I book the room next door? sounds like heaven Grin

purplewithred · 20/07/2012 20:29

Come and sit with me. Slightly deaf Mum has had a glass of wine and a Daily Mail too many, DH is a bit needy after me being out at work all week. I NEED SILENCE AND SPACE! AAARGH!

right, back to the sitting room Wine my only option.

SpamMarie · 20/07/2012 20:31

I think you need to instate a 'remain within 3m of the electrical appliance you have just turned on' rule. You're only allowed to leave stuff turned on for toilet and drinks breaks! That seems to be half the problem.

littlebluechair · 20/07/2012 20:33

YANBU to want ten minutes, but you sound a bit martyrish - so maybe it is time to actually get cross and stand your ground. And fuck making the dinner - maybe tonight you should play the guitar and your husband can sort it?

ModreB · 20/07/2012 20:34

Cheers purple. Wine it is. I give up.

I just went to the loo, and found a big floater to keep me company. I am fed up with the lot of them.

Buy yourself some noise cancelling headphones and ostentatiously put them on whenever anyone interrupts your pre-booked quiet time Grin

Yama · 20/07/2012 20:35

You are far more patient than me. I would have boomed "Do NOT turn that tv/radio on!" the second I saw a finger show its intent.

Chubfuddler · 20/07/2012 20:35

I gave to say if this was me, the second time Dh turned the light on and went out of the room he'd have told his fortune. Did you just sit like a lemon op?

Yama · 20/07/2012 20:35

I realise you shouldn't have to though.

biddyofsuburbia · 20/07/2012 20:37

Get a great big glass of vino (or you might just want your tea given the headache situ) and go and sit outside - there must be somewhere to hide and I know I am going to do just that right this second, here Brew and if there were earplugs i'd give you some of those too Smile

ModreB · 20/07/2012 20:37

No, I did call after him and say "If you're not in here, turn the sodding light off!"

I think I am just being irritable because I'm tired, it wouldn't normally bother me.

AT LAST. They have both gone out to walk the dog. And DH is going to get a nice bottle of Wine so he can't be all bad.

OP posts:
drummerswife · 20/07/2012 20:47

get your dh to pick up a takeaway too and whilst their out have a soak in the bath

iklboo · 20/07/2012 20:49

OAM you're welcome. If anyone else is interested we might get block booking rates. MN Fawlty Towers anyone? Grin

busyboysmum · 20/07/2012 20:54

Have you read 5 Minutes Peace by Jill Murphy? Makes me laugh every time I read it, especially when she gets in the bath and gets about 3 minutes peace before they all come and join her. I can't even go to the loo in peace in this household!

And I don't think you are being unreasonable.
