....to want to ban page 3???

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

Frances, I don't think it's fair to dismiss GhostShip's feelings like that.

I would argue though that, yes, being on Page 3 probably does make some women feel powerful because women achieve power through their looks in our society. However, they are also scorned for doing the very thing that they achieve power from. It's quite horrible really.

yellowraincoat · 20/07/2012 19:26

Ghostship, objectification isn't a "buzz" word. It is an actual thing that happens.

Do I object to men having their top off? Well, it's hardly the widespread thing that Page 3, Nuts, Zoo etc are so no. Also, men have more power (actual power) in our society, so the two don't really conflate.

I don't mind if you don't share my views, but you don't need to get personal and accuse people of using buzz words. We can just debate it rationally.

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:27

I apologise yellowraincoat, it just gets my goat. Wine

MirandaGoshawk · 20/07/2012 19:29

Lol! As if we'd want to - that'd put me off my lunch!

YANBU.

I've always hated it. So degrading to the rest of us females.

yellowraincoat · 20/07/2012 19:29

Ghostship, sure. But it gets some women's goat(s) that Page 3 exists. Getting all up in each other's faces doesn't really make sense.

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:30

I just don't believe if you don't object to the 'objectification' of men then is a bit contradictory? I think the line between men and woman is becoming closer and neither really have the upper hand or are more powerful.

We all have our different opinions on the matter I suppose, but I just want people to know that I for one, someone who knows it up close and personal, doesn't appreciate people trying to campaign for us. We aren't idiots. We know what we are doing. :)

yellowraincoat · 20/07/2012 19:31

LynetteScavo, not really on to judge your neighbour is it? Judge the men that are simultaneously salivating and looking down on Page 3.

I've done a few rum things in my time, would be pretty pissed off if the neighbours were judging me for it.

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:31

Dont*

Does anyone actually know where 'gets my goat' originates from? Off topic but I'm genuinely interested.

yellowraincoat · 20/07/2012 19:32

Ghostship, if you don't believe men have the upper hand, it is sort of impossible to debate this. I don't believe men are objectified in the same way AT ALL.

People aren't trying to campaign for YOU. They're trying to campaign for women in general. No offence, but I don't think the women who do Page 3 are at the forefront of any campaigner's mind.

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 19:34

I think it's creepy that men want to masturbate over pictures of other men's teenage daughters in a daily newspaper.

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 19:34

(Some men, I should say.)

yellowraincoat · 20/07/2012 19:35

LineRunner, I think it's weird that you see women as "other men's daughters".

They're women in their own right, it makes no sense to define them by their relationships to men.

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:35

I don't believe that because I don't see it in any aspect of my life. I have a 'normal' day job and it doesn't happen their either. I have just as many rights as a man. Maybe even more so in some situations.

Can anyone provide any facts as to how page 3 has an affect on women in general? Or is it just how people feel?

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:36

Linerunner - so shouldn't men sleep with women because it's 'another mans daughter'. Bit daft that comment really...

I'm a woman, not just a mans daughter.

Meglet · 20/07/2012 19:36

yanbu. It is weird.

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 19:42

I just think it's really seedy that this is wank material and hypocritical to deny that this is wank material.

And I'm not daft. I'm a woman with an opinion of my own.

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2012 19:43

I see what you are saying, yellowraincoat, but I don't think I was judging her negatively as such; I was slightly amazed, and rather curious. (I certainly did of her screaming tantrums, though!) I feel the same about a colleague who used to be a lap dancer....I can see if I'd had the ability/ opportunity it might have been something I would have done when young (and naive).

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 19:45

And like I said before, just because people want to do something, doesn't make it ok.

I want to be a gobby shite tonight to make myself feel better. Doesn't make it necessarily right.

NovackNGood · 20/07/2012 19:46

Weird to think that Rupert Murdoch the man who owns FOXnews which is so religious and right wing also owns the SUN and fights to keep Page 3 and that the girls he used to have on page 3 were only 16.

Personally I don't have a problem with the nudity aspect it's more the wanting to be seen as serious journalism and then showing topless photos. It's on a journalism level of Grazia or any other shopping till magazine with their photos of Rafa Nadal in his bathers on the beach or Beckham in his undies.

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:53

No-one is denying its 'wank material' so no-one is being hypocritical linerunner.

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 19:56

No-one? Absolutely no-one?

GhostShip · 20/07/2012 19:58

Where has anyone said it isn't?

Its a bit obvious men wank over it.

minimisschief · 20/07/2012 20:00

yabu its art just like that thread earlier where no one cared about a bit of nudity in a painting no one should care about a picture.

LineRunner · 20/07/2012 20:01

Do all men really wank over page 3? Isn't that a bit insulting to all men?

EclecticShock · 20/07/2012 20:02

Are you going to ban porn and provocative clothing too? Or the DM entertainment section or lads mags or sex scenes in films? Or music videos or erotic fiction? Or just stop women showing their bodies as they please and men looking at women showing their bodies? I don't like p3 either but I don't buy it.
