....to want to ban page 3???

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

page 3 is so british, it is so naughty post card without the humour young women gets her boobs out haha it is nothing about celebrating the naked body at all it is get them out for the lads attitude

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/09/2012 19:48

YANBU.

It should be banned.

HTH.

merrymouse · 08/09/2012 19:49

I am finding the idea of an innocent teenage boy being tempted to look at a woman's breasts and thinking: "no, I won't peruse the Internet, I will sneak a look at the Sun instead" to be very Adrian Mole.

When my brother was seven I found page 3 under his pillow. I was gobsmacked!

expatinscotland · 08/09/2012 20:55

'Ghostship - you are right, I certainly wouldn't want any man I was with to look at page 3, but that's because (a) I would rather be with a partner who has the intellect to read a proper newspaper (b) any partner of mine would share similar values to me and consequently would consider page 3 degrading to women '

Quite. I'd think, 'Eeewww . . . ' of a man like that.

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 21:07

There was a poster on here who had a cut out of a man in his undies, asking was she being unreasonable to keep it stuck on something so she could look at it. No one said she was unreasonable, in fact links were posted so people can have a perve. Double standards much. Is this not degrading to men?

SomersetONeil · 08/09/2012 21:14

No, it's not degrading to men, because they haven't spent the whole history of mankind up until only the last few generations being the lesser, inferior sex; the chattel of the other sex.

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 21:14

What a cop out.

expatinscotland · 08/09/2012 21:50

Hmm. I had a daughter with leukaemia. A rare, in her case lethal form of leukaemia. I've lost her, nearly my family, we're very fucked up, I have PTSD from it all, I'll probably wind up with a bankrupcy soon and next April, we may lose our home, too. What to do? Become a stripper, get my tits out for wank fodder? Somehow it just never crossed my mind and I'm not unattractive, even now.

But if it does to others, good on them. Strip, hooch out, ho out, whatever.

Just don't believe it belongs in a national newspaper.

Do I care, if my midwife or relative's carer is a stripper or even a prostitute? No.

But it doesn't belong in a national newspaper, even if it's a rag trash buy.

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 21:58

I'm sorry about your daughter.

But you don't want to do it, so? I did. We're all different.

I'm not gunna argue anymore because it's opinions isn't it. I just don't appreciate being called a prostitute and being made to feel that I've done something wrong and immoral

SomersetONeil · 08/09/2012 22:05

Cop out? Confused

expatinscotland · 08/09/2012 22:08

I just don't think it belongs in a newspaper. Want to go do it? Fine. But it shouldn't be in a broadsheet.

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 22:12

somerset your post is a complete cop out. If you don't see how then there's no point debating this.

Ridiculous to think men can't be degraded in the same manner because they haven't been the lesser sex.

SomersetONeil · 08/09/2012 22:21

Oh my goodness, if you think that statement is a cop out, then you're right, there is no point debating this.

Why do I get drawn into these threads - the blinkered, Stepford, I'm-empowered-by-getting-my-tits-out-for-the-lads attitudes of so many people is just so

Shagmundfreud · 08/09/2012 23:02

"But you don't want to do it, so? I did. We're all different"

Aaargh.... wall... head....bang.... Shock

It's not about your willingness to expose your body for money.

It's about the wider cultural issue of tolerance of casual public display of young women's naked bodies for commercial gain by a major news organisation.

Expat - there are many of us here thinking of you and your family. Sad

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 08/09/2012 23:13

Page 3 has a negative impact on all girls and woman. It send out a clear message that women's bodies are there to be sexually objectified. The ready availability of porn on the internet, simply reinforces that message.

I knew someone would comment on that, that isnt my view it was the persons I was talking to.

Shagmundfreud · 08/09/2012 23:42

Ghostship, if someone came up to you in the supermarket and offered you £50 to lift your top and show your tits there and then, would you do it? And if there was a family with school age children near by who would see this exchange?

How are the ethical issues any different from you showing your breasts for cash in a newspaper which will be seen by children?

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 23:46

That's actually laughable.

It's completely different.

How can it be seen by children? Unless you're buying the paper. Also, if they do see it it's just boobs. Would you mind them seeing a woman breastfeeding? Or is that different? You'll say yes. When to a child a boob is a boob.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 09/09/2012 01:13

You really cant tell the difference between how a woman's breasts are presented in page 3 and when a woman is breastfeeding?

expatinscotland · 09/09/2012 02:50

And your 7-year-old relative saw a Page3 'girl'? You don't see the difference, honestly?

Want to strip, hook, be an adult film/magazine participant? I'm all about that being legalised and taxed accordingly.

People have and do sell tits, vags, cocks, whatever since time immortal. Let's make it legal, among consenting adults and tax it accordingly.

But it has no place in a national newspaper and it makes Brits look like immature idiots.

And call yourself what you are, none of this 'glamour' 'modelling' bullshit. You strip for money. That is what it is. You get power off being wank fodder. So? Don't play otherwise, many others get their kicks for much less.

Don't play the jealous card, either, plenty of us responding are attractive, even beautiful, in our own rights without getting our kit off.

Go there. Fine. But call a spade a spade.

expatinscotland · 09/09/2012 02:53

And you know, I have one daughter left. I teach her that her body isn't for sale, no matter what.

I teach my son, too.

People who oggle this stuff are low-rent, chav, immature, losers. Yuk, disgusting low lives.
