Double bed for a 13 year old?

MrsToddNeeLovett · 20/07/2012 12:41

So DS (13) has expressed a wish for a double bed. I am in process of replacing his bed anyway so it's not a case of him demanding a new bed - just that he'd like his new one to be a double.

His room is not massive and a double bed would take up almost all of it. In addition he'd have room for a wardrobe, a bedside table, a small computer desk and his drum kit. But to be fair it's not as if he "plays around" in his room anyway so he doesn't actually "need" any spare space iywim.

However, I still think it's unnecessary - isn't a double bed something you look forward to when you're older?

Or AIBU?

What about one of those 3/4 size ones as a compromise?

Jins · 20/07/2012 12:45

I bought one for DS2 when he was 13 as he was already 5'10" and wasn't going to get any shorter. He's 14 now and just hit 6ft so I'm glad I did.

Seona1973 · 20/07/2012 12:45

my niece got a double bed recently. It is handy for sleepovers as the other girls just share the bed. I never got a double bed until moving in with dh (not dh at the time!) at the age of 19

AltruisticEnigma · 20/07/2012 12:46

I got a double bed at 15. It was mainly because I took up a lot of space in the bed and otherwise would've fallen out.

It's up to you really. It's not like it's inappropriate or anything, so it's whether you think it's suitable or not.

jollyrancher · 20/07/2012 12:47

If he don't need the spare space and he wants the bed then I don't see why he shouldn't have it. I am very small, about the size of a 10/11 year old. I prefer a double bed even when I sleep alone. Its nicer.

valiumredhead · 20/07/2012 12:47

Yes, what about an 'occasional' double?

MrsToddNeeLovett · 20/07/2012 12:47

Well DS is getting quite tall. He's about 5ft 7in now. He's a mature 13 year old so has no toys or anything like that, doesn't even have an xbox or any kind of games console in his room. If he ever was to get a TV most of them fit into the wall now anyway.

Get a 4' one rather than 4' 6'' as a compromise.

HecateHarshPants · 20/07/2012 12:49

It sounds like he could do with a bigger bed. If he wants a double, and it will fit, and it's affordable then I'd say just let him have it.

StetsonsAreCool · 20/07/2012 12:49

My parents got me a 3/4 sized bed when I was 13 and had my room decorated. Me and DH still sleep in there whenever we stay over. It's a good compromise.

Mrs Todd, I would just get him one. Do you really want to have to buy him another new bed in a couple of years' time? Yes, it may be unnecessary, but why not a treat? Do not sweat the small stuff with a teenager.

2rebecca · 20/07/2012 12:51

My son has always had a double bed since coming out of a cot because that's the bed that was in that room before we had him and it's handy if we have visitors. He sometimes wishes he had a smaller bed so more floor space.

McHappyPants2012 · 20/07/2012 12:52

ds has a double bed and he is 6.

bamboobutton · 20/07/2012 12:52

my 4yo has a double bed, mainly because i still co-sleep. even when he starts sleeping on his own he'll keep the double. i'll get a double for dd when she outgrows the cot too.

i don't see why your ds shouldn't have one if thats what he would like. i had a double from young teenage(14ish) i hated singles as there was no room to stretch out properly.

Kayano · 20/07/2012 12:53

I would get one if they asked

ivykaty44 · 20/07/2012 12:54

if he has asked for a double bed- why do you want him to wait until he is older?

As you say he doesn't play in his room, sounds like he has enough room and he will lye on his bed to listen to music, escape form the oldies and I guess it will get used more than yours - as teens spend a long time in bed and up to 14 hours a night/day

cuntflapwankbadger · 20/07/2012 12:54

I don't understand why this is a problem - get him a double if he wants and you can afford! At this stage it's nothing to do with sex or partners which it will be when he's older and it'll be more embarrassing for everyone to have that conversation! (Voice of experience)

hell no, i love my kingsized bed if i had the space i would have a superking size bed. Sleep is important and if someone can have a bigger bed then why not

my DD has the box bedroom and when she is older she will have something similar to this

I had a double bed from about 14. I had a massive room though.

It was great. I loved it.

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 20/07/2012 13:00

DS is getting a new bed soon as he needs one and its going to be a small double.

He's only 10 now but obviously he's eventually going to end up needing the room especially by the time he's 13/14.

My brother had a single bed up until being 16 but he really needed the space way before then his feet were sticking out of the bottom for a long time.

Puffykins · 20/07/2012 13:14

I was not allowed a double bed in my bedroom 'at home' (I.e. In my parents's house) until I was married. My father is of the opinion that it is inappropriate for unmarried girls to have a double as it gives the wrong impression. And now, having grown up with that mentality, I weirdly kind of share it (for both sexes) without being able to give you any decent reason why. An occasional double maybe, but not an actual double.

NettoSuperstar · 20/07/2012 13:16

DD's 10 and wants one. I'll get her one when we move.
On the other hand, I'm 34 and don't have one, don't want one either, I love my single bed.

cuntflapwankbadger · 20/07/2012 13:17

inappropriate for unmarried girls to have a double as it gives the wrong impression

Surely if anyone's gotten into your room to see this "wrong impression" then they've got the right impression? Wink

SugarBatty · 20/07/2012 13:19

Dd has had one since she was 2! More room for stories and cuddles and for her 30 teddies including a fairground polar bear Grin

Its also handy when guests come as it serves as a spare bed. I intend to put baby ds in one too when he grows out his cotbed.

izzyizin · 20/07/2012 13:22

I got my dd a double loft bed from Ikea with the optional long shelf unit when she was c7/8yo. It freed up the floor space and enabled us to put a small double sofa bed in the room too.

Our house has always been popular for sleepovers and she's got the option of being able to stretch out on the ground floor, so to speak, if she can't be arsed to climb the stairs to bed Grin
