Double bed for a 13 year old?

MrsToddNeeLovett · 20/07/2012 12:41

So DS (13) has expressed a wish for a double bed. I am in process of replacing his bed anyway so it's not a case of him demanding a new bed - just that he'd like his new one to be a double.

His room is not massive and a double bed would take up almost all of it. In addition he'd have room for a wardrobe, a bedside table, a small computer desk and his drum kit. But to be fair it's not as if he "plays around" in his room anyway so he doesn't actually "need" any spare space iywim.

However, I still think it's unnecessary - isn't a double bed something you look forward to when you're older?

Or AIBU?

Both my dc have doubles.
they come in very handy and as my 2 thrash about alot when asleep, rather neccessary...

SaraBellumHertz · 20/07/2012 13:25

DC1 has had one since she was 3, dc2 did have on but decided he'd prefer ink beds. I'm laughing at the idea they give the wrong idea [grin ] although I can just imagine my late grandmother saying the same!

latterlov3r · 20/07/2012 13:25

dont see why not what difference does bed size really make other than extra comfort if they want it and your willing to pay for it then go for it, its not going to make them more liekly to get up to anything is it?

Sidge · 20/07/2012 13:28

My DD1 has had a double bed for 18 months now, she's nearly 14. When she needed a new bed it made sense to get a double as then we can hoof her out of it when we have guests.

I don't subscribe to the "double bed = having sex" train of thought.

LaurieBlueBell · 20/07/2012 13:29

My 12 year old ds is very tall. He doesn't have a lot of spare room so we got him a double high sleeper. His book shelf and computer desk and chair fit easily underneath. He has ended up with more floor space than he had with a single bed.

McHappyPants2012 · 20/07/2012 13:30

it was rather intimate.

If a teen is going to have sex they are going to, the size of the bed really doesn't make a diffrence

diddl · 20/07/2012 13:35

Both of ours have had doubles from a young age due to our bed being replaced & "handed down".

Doubles were handy when they wouldn´t sleep as we could doze off with them!

bigTillyMint · 20/07/2012 13:36

DH and I shared his single bed when we were first "courting" He was 27 and I was 31Grin I don't see how the size of the bed would stop anyone either!

scuzy · 20/07/2012 13:41

ds has his own double bed since he was 2 and half.

Mrbojangles1 · 20/07/2012 13:51

We brought our boy and small 4ft double when he was 10 so glad i did he is 5ft 7 with size 7 feet he is 12 and he would fall off his single bed

Op do it

Puffykins · 20/07/2012 13:53

cuntflap, you totally have a point. Until DH and I moved in together (when we were engaged) we had only ever slept together in a single bed. Although I wouldn't want to revert to that, I do sort of miss the forced intimacy. Oh, we were so in love . . . .

ErnesttheBavarian · 20/07/2012 14:00

My ds (aged 12) has had a double for a while now. He talked his younger brother into swapping with him. His room is more 'grown up' and teenager-y and he's really proud of it, and as a result keeps his room v. tidy (was a mess before the transformation)

I would not recommend going with the 4 foot bed as a compromise. My pil did this years ago when sil was a kid. for whatever reason, dh did have a double though. Now, when we visit, e.g. at Christmas, dh and I get his old room with double bed. Sil & her dh get her old room w. 4 foot bed. She is so pissed off about it.

So I'd recommend getting the double if he wants it, save trouble with the dil in years to come! :)

ps, if all beds are the same length, what difference does it make if it's a single or a double?

eagerbeagle · 20/07/2012 14:10

DS aged 3 has a king size. Handed down from me and DH when we upgraded to a super king. He starfishes all over the place when he sleeps and he rarely falls out. It also doubles up as a guest bed.

ratspeaker · 20/07/2012 14:14

They can sleep sort of diagonally ernest DS1 had a double bed as a young teen as he sprouted very quickly, with a king size duvet. It was in a triple bunk so there was room for overnight pals.

Why not go for a double loft bed as has been suggested and put the drum kit and computer desk underneath, the only thing is they need to remember to crouch when getting up from them

Word to the wise if you go for a loft bed get them to change the sheets

ErnesttheBavarian · 20/07/2012 14:16

thanks rat (dim)

I also agree - I have a high bed for my other ds, and changing his bed is a total PITA.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/07/2012 14:46

Oh yes, high sleeper beds are a pain in the bum to change.

My DS has a 2 seater sofa bed type (so a small double)

MrsTodd I'd let him have the double if he got rid of the drum kit Grin

turkeyboots · 20/07/2012 15:04

Only problem with a double bed early in life is that you'll fall out of single beds. Or at least I did in my days in halls and when I get a single bed in a hotel.

It's ruined me for hostels and the like.

ExitPursuedByABear · 20/07/2012 15:17

My DD has always had a double as that was the bed that was going spare.

I must say I looked at the beds shown on the tv in the olympic village and thought eek, they look small.

Get him a double.

MissFaversam · 20/07/2012 15:21

DS is 14 and he's getting a 4ft one, no point in getting a single again really once they become teens and are probably going to grow to 6ft. Take a look at the one in Argos, Brown leather look alike one drawer divan too.

phlebas · 20/07/2012 15:27

"My father is of the opinion that it is inappropriate for unmarried girls to have a double as it gives the wrong impression.

Yup, that's just weird frankly.

My dd1 has had a double for as long as she's been in a bed - the others would too if we had more room.

NettoSuperstar · 20/07/2012 15:29

How odd that double bed=sex.
Does that make me a virgin then? Confused

Ithinkitsjustme · 20/07/2012 15:30

We bought new beds for our kids recently and they all have doubles, with the exception of the 11 year old who is on the top bunk over a double bed which his brother sleeps in. It's really handy for when we have friends/ family staying over and they all love them. If you can afford it, then I can't see any reason why not, just remember that it means completely new bedding as well!

Spuddybean · 20/07/2012 15:33

I had a double from 9yo.

littlemissbroody26 · 20/07/2012 15:36

you might aswell invest in a double now, as looking to the future you can use it as a spare/guest bed.

Jux · 20/07/2012 15:50

When we moved here, we had our double bed, and found that the previous owner had left us a beautiful double bed too! So, not having anything but a mattress for dd as her bed had fallen apart before we moved, she got a double then. She was 6. Brilliant for sleepovers.
