Double bed for a 13 year old?

MrsToddNeeLovett · 20/07/2012 12:41

So DS (13) has expressed a wish for a double bed. I am in process of replacing his bed anyway so it's not a case of him demanding a new bed - just that he'd like his new one to be a double.

His room is not massive and a double bed would take up almost all of it. In addition he'd have room for a wardrobe, a bedside table, a small computer desk and his drum kit. But to be fair it's not as if he "plays around" in his room anyway so he doesn't actually "need" any spare space iywim.

However, I still think it's unnecessary - isn't a double bed something you look forward to when you're older?

Or AIBU?

My DD2 has also had one since she was 2 as it was the only other bed we had, and we weren't going to go out and buy another one. Loads of room for sleepovers, tho' your ds sounds a bit big for same bed sleepovers.

I don't see it as a big deal, if you can afford it ,let him have it

DS has a king size bed. It does take up half the room, but he still has room for wardrobe, desk , bedside table etc.

He is over six feet tall, a single wasn't suitable. He can sleep diagonally

;)

My DD got a double bed for her 16th birthday. She's about 5'10" so far. She spends plenty of time sitting on it drawing, or on her laptop, and she stores clothes all over it... Her best friend shares it for sleepovers. And she stores crap in boxes underneath it.

I think it's fine.

DD's had a double since she was 7. She changed bedrooms and the double was in there, it's convenient. She sleeps like a starfish so it's nice for her to have room to stretch out and be comfy.

I had a double bed when I was 14, I loved it and could spread out at night. When I had a friend sleep over we just stayed in it together, no need for spare bed or sleeping bag on the floor.

I hated going back to a single when I went into halls at university, I felt like I was going to fall out!

DD2 has a double high sleeper, DD1 has a single high sleeper - they are 9 and 11 and are both getting tall enough that some time in the next 2 years they will want to come down (low ceilinged 1980s house). They will both be getting doubles. DD1 will move downstairs to the spare room because it's bigger than hers and that will be that.

Double bed = sex? No-one told me!

Both my teenage DDs have double beds. They are great for lounging on when doing homework or on the laptop. Sleepovers are easy as you don't have to organise camp beds. If you have the space and can afford it, I would say go for it.

I would get a 4'6" bed rather than a 4' bed because there's more choice of bedlinen for a standard width double than for a 4' bed. Bedlinen for non-standard beds is often more expensive - we had this with DC's cotbed.

Dd1(9) has a double bed for all the reasons above, a single would've looked tiny in her room, handy for visitors/sleepovers, and I didn't want to have to replace it in a few years time when she was older, it is also her leaving present when she moves into her own home (very forward planning lol) so I can feel I've reallllly got my money's worth :)
She now wants one of those bunkbeds with a sofa underneath, I've told her she can have one of those when she moves into her own place :)

DS is 6 and has a double bed. Didn't intend to get him a double but we were recently given an almost new one. It's good for sleepovers and brilliant if he has a nightmare or is ill as there is room for me or DH to get in with him.

I would certainly let a 13 year old have a double.

I had a double bed growing up - my parents got a new bed just as I was moving out of my cot so I got their old one. Obviously I think it is fine for children to have a double bed, although mine are unlikely to get one for some years due to lack of space. Biggest downside is that I am a very selfish sleeper and take up a lot of space in our bed. I also struggle to sleep in a single and have been known to fall/hang out on occasions where I have had to!

Nuttyprofessor · 20/07/2012 20:16

My DS 11 has had a double for a few years. I am currently sitting on it. He is not well and is sleeping beside me.

janelikesjam · 20/07/2012 20:32

OP, I understand your dilemma. I wish I had got my son a double, as they grow so fast. I think they sleep better in a double and with luck will go to bed earlier ...

Debs75 · 20/07/2012 20:47

We got dd1, then 13 a 3/4 bed. She isn't particularly tall but does have ahabit of falling out of bed. We got it on the reasoning it would be good for sleepovers, we wouldn't miss the triple sleeper she had before so much, it is very well hand made and will last her for a good 20 years. She uses flat double sheets and a double quilt so no big expense with bedding there.
When dd2 and 3(2 and 3) get their own room they will probably have a double to share, they like to sleep together and it will take up less room then 2 decent 3 foot singles
Sleep is essential so why not let him have a decent sized bed to sleep in.

DumSpiroSpero · 20/07/2012 21:00

We've just got our DD (nearly 8) a four foot small double. Mostly for logistical reasons as I really wanted her to have a divan and we can't get a 3ft one past the sloped ceiling & tight turn at the top of our stairs.

She has been in my old double bed in the spare room (which we are doing up for her this week) since half term and has been sleeping so much better it's unbelievable.

I would def recommend going for the big bed option if you can.
