To be annoyed by what people call their pets...?

So, mainly, I don't allow the common abbreviation of my dd's name because I know about 3 dogs with the same name.
To add to that they (the animals) have taken jack, molly, Tyler, Millie and many more.
AIBU to think that pets should have pets names like socks, tigger, fluffy?

OP posts:
StrandedBear · 20/07/2012 11:21

Maybe people should stop giving their children dogs names

cocolepew · 20/07/2012 11:22

My dog is called Molly.

10 years ago when my nephew was born I was discussing names with my brother. I said I liked Ben for a boy, he snorted "he's not a dog" and called him Sam Hmm.

manchestermummy · 20/07/2012 11:39

I know a dog called Dave too. It's a fluffy, white, pedigree affair who by rights should probably be called Prince Tinkerbubble Bouncylegs the Fourth or something.

My cat's called Barney. Perhaps we should also avoid calling our pets after purple dinosaurs.

thegreylady · 20/07/2012 11:42

My cats are Kedi which is Turkish for cat and and Haggis because he has a very bagpipe like yowl. My dogs however were Oscar and Maisie.Sorry.

chemenger · 20/07/2012 12:05

We have a cat and a child with the same name, cat came from rescue with the name, had the child already. We thought about changing her name but it would have caused a lot of confusion at school. They are now known as "X-the-cat" and "X-the-child".
Of course the cat has no idea that she even has a name.
Previous cats were Thelma and Louise, Kas and Marmaris, Dot and Dash, Koshka and Rika (meant to be half of Fred and Rika but Fred never made it out of the farmyard Sad) and Tiger.

MissFaversam · 20/07/2012 12:12

I had a plant called "Dave"

It died.

PuppyMonkey · 20/07/2012 12:16

Oh yes, I once had a couple of shubunkins called Des and Daphne. They were named for the characters in Neighbours.

Mrsjay · 20/07/2012 12:19

MY late dog has a girls name as did my cat and dd Buddied a girl at school with my dogs name she didnt dare tell her Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 20/07/2012 12:21

My DD plans to have lots of dogs and this morning decided that fruits would make good names (Blackberry, Kiwi ...ok ... Banana Hmm) and then she started on veg (Carrot, Cauli ...)

Our dog came pre-named - diminutive of DBs name which was a little odd for a week or so.

AltruisticEnigma · 20/07/2012 12:33

Mixed bag here.

My partners dog is called Archie, which kind of words for both humans and dogs I suppose. I think it suits him. :)

My aunts cat is called Pat. As he was a vicious little bugger we'd all chorus 'don't pat the cat' when someone wanted to stroke him and trust me, the warning was headed. He's a lot calmer now though, thank goodness.

Our cats at home were:
Buttons
Dougal
Bubbles

Rats:
Jessica
Roland
Bruce
Spike
Headwig

Btw, I named Dougal, Headwig and Spike because I'm boss. Grin

AltruisticEnigma · 20/07/2012 12:34

Hedwig...

rubycon · 20/07/2012 12:39

cats - Ruby and Evie
dog - Eric

squoosh · 20/07/2012 12:43

Surely naming a pet gives toy licence to release The Crazy!

You want to yell out Algernon or Hildegard not bloody Molly or Jack.

I know a greyhound called Gordon, he's cool.

MammaTJ · 20/07/2012 12:47

YANBU. I called my DD a fairly unusual name. Then a few weeks later someone in the same street as me, the street only has 25 home in it, called their dog the same name!!

It is so not a pets name!! Angry

TigerFeet · 20/07/2012 12:47

My cat was called Charlie - we are nothing if not original in our house.

I know of a cat called Colin, which I think is the bestest ever.

If I ever have another cat I shall call it Ron or Basil or somesuch, I love human names on animals.

Sorry OP, but I think YABU.

Mrsjay · 20/07/2012 12:49

sawa huge great dane on a tv programme the other day he was called "mr Tinkerbelle" Grin

IslaValargeone · 20/07/2012 12:58

I do get rather irrationally irritated by people who call their pets something pretentiously intellectual.
Naming your cat 'Hometeracles' because you read a bit of philosophy/greek mythology when you were in someone else's loo once, isn't going to make me think you are clever, I'm more likely to think you are a knob.

HeadfirstForRomance · 20/07/2012 13:13

I have a dog called Millie Grin

Our cats are called Dave, Bella and Indiana Jones. We did have a kitty called Merlot but he went missing last month :(

Dillydollydaydream · 20/07/2012 13:23

My cats have animal type names or unusual people names - Pixie & Honey. My guinea pigs have humanish names but they're not names I personally would use for a child - Monty, Milo and Morris.

crazy8 · 20/07/2012 13:26

I know a cat called Brian

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 20/07/2012 13:34
