So, mainly, I don't allow the common abbreviation of my dd's name because I know about 3 dogs with the same name.
To add to that they (the animals) have taken jack, molly, Tyler, Millie and many more.
AIBU to think that pets should have pets names like socks, tigger, fluffy?

My neighbour's cat is called Caesar, which is a dog's name IMO. I'm a bit Hmm about Caesar for a cat. Caligula, maybe, but Caesar just sounds weird.

Nothing wrong with human names for cats though. My other neighbour's cat is called Gilbert Grin It suits him. He looks like a Gilbert.

exotic I want by next baby, if a girl to be Lydia but don't like the thought an animal is called it. However, as I don't know any personally ill be ok!
Like I said, call your pets what you want, I actually think that names like Colin, derek, Barry etc are quite amusing. Not many DC's would be called that nowadays. But Sophie, Lilly, jack, Mia...

We have a Sasha (11) and a Mia (8) who we've had since birth - Both cats

We are trend setters of course because we know FOUR families that now have a Sasha and a Mia human kids!

iknowwho · 20/07/2012 08:27

My cat is called Moggin the Mog.
A good cat name!

Beaverfeaver · 20/07/2012 08:27

I used to know a lady who had a cat called Martha.
It went missing during her pregnancy.

When she gave birth she announced her new child as being called Martha!

That shocked me.

However, I have dogs and cats all with human names.

Current cat called Nigel. (seems more popular than we thought, but he was named after the Xtc song)

anniebunny · 20/07/2012 08:30

Most of our fish are called Dave apart from two- Ernie and Flossie. We also have giant African land snails called Jack, Lily, Dave (again!), Davina, Nigella and Nigella.

I would really like a dog called Sprocket but just not practical!

iknowwho · 20/07/2012 08:32

Beaver Are you making plans for him? Grin

muffinino82 · 20/07/2012 08:33

YABU, especially regarding felines, because the naming of cats is a difficult matter Grin

muffinino82 · 20/07/2012 08:34

A friend of mine had a rat called Sprocket when we were children Grin

InWithTheITCrowd · 20/07/2012 08:37

My sister in law has a dog called Rebecca. Which is my sister's name. My sister was, and remains, most put out. SIL even abbreviates to "Bec" on occasion.

NimpyWindowMash · 20/07/2012 08:40

Grin at minge

HorsesDogsNails · 20/07/2012 08:52

My dog is called Stevie and most of the dogs I know have human names. Daisy and Austin are the most popular but I know dogs called Tia, Millie, Sam and Basil. The one dog I see with a 'dog' name is Lucky and that just seems a bit weird to me now!!

pinkandsparklytoo · 20/07/2012 09:23

My cat is called Bobby, after the Railway Children. She was found abandoned by the railway. (FIL named her). Also have a gerbil named Ben (Bill died) two turtles called Chopper and Ped after trains, and two stick insects called Hannibal and Fred. Used to have a hamster called Fat Buddha and another called Turbo. I prefer non people names for animals. A family friend has a French bulldog called Brian.

SarryB · 20/07/2012 09:25

My dog is called Millie...but she's a rescue dog and came with the name! It's short for Millicent the Magnificent!

Jux · 20/07/2012 09:26

Before I married, my cats' names were things like Pythagoras, Isoceles etc.

We took it in turns to name our 3 current cats, so the first we got is stuck with a descriptive like Blackie, as dd was 6 when we got him. I got second cat, so she's got a historical name, and dh got the 3rd and that's just a mad name!

DawnOfTheDee · 20/07/2012 09:31

I can't abide cats/dogs with the name 'Lucky'....they've usually had something terrible happen to them. Ok...you could say they were 'lucky' to have come through it but surely they'd have been luckier not to have been in the predicament in the first place...Confused

ddubsgirl · 20/07/2012 09:44

dog-buster
cat-homer

CheerMum · 20/07/2012 09:57

Dogs have been Sam Ben and currently Fred
Rats were Sophie Barbara and Penelope
Guinea Pig was Moonstone
Chickens are Henny, Trippy, Shelley and Bella
As from tomorrow our new kittens will be Phoenix and Amunet
We never bothered naming the fish as we seemed to kill em all off within a couple of days

When Dh and I first got together we got Sam the dog and we knew we were getting married so we registered him at the vets with my maiden name just so we could change it when we got hitched hehe

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 20/07/2012 09:57

My dog is called Mollie... But she's a collie. Always makes the receptionist in the vets smile Smile

When the kids are all at school, I fully intend to get a spaniel and name him Daniel.

D0oinMeCleanin · 20/07/2012 10:02

My first cat was called Jack. My first nephew was called Jack. He was born before the cat turned to religion and moved himself in with the local vicar. It didn't cause any confusion.

My Dad's dog (Freya) has the same name as my niece's best friend.

We also have three Max's. One is my second cat, one is a Macaw one is Jack's friend (the boy Jack, not the cat)

AtLeastThatsWhatYouSaid · 20/07/2012 10:51

My brother has a Tarantula called Steve!

Friends dog is Mickey

Years ago i had fish called Lyn, Tuck & Ming Ming. A greyhound called Kizer.

Mums friends dog is a terrier called Boris

theincredibequeenofwands · 20/07/2012 10:52

There's a very well respected tattoo artist in our area called Slug.

A cat with the same name would be incredibly well respected by those in the West Wiltshire tattooing community.

WkdSM · 20/07/2012 11:00

When my dog is naughty I call him Boutros Boutros Ghali (a former secretary for the UN) - I don't know why but it seems to roll of the tongue. It has no connection to his actual name but when I say it he knows he has been naughty.

Our cats were named after perfumes as one of them farted terribly when we got her.

Can we ask that adults don't have stupid names then (particularly The Edge from U2 - always had this image of his mum calling him 'The Edge - come in for your tea now The Edge')

Jins · 20/07/2012 11:10

I know dogs called Max (3), Harry (2), Ellie,Molly, Lola, Lucy, and Jack

They are older than the majority of the children I know with those names so I conclude that people are naming their children after dogs.

MissFaversam · 20/07/2012 11:16

Mate had a cat called Mouse.

Sister had a dog called Lucy but used to lengthen it to Lucerinas pookas penis.
yes, sis is rather deranged

Dog was dragging behind one day and sister forgot herself and started calling "penis, penis, where are you" only to turn round to see a bloke behind her who had gone as red as a beetroot.
