To be annoyed by what people call their pets...?

So, mainly, I don't allow the common abbreviation of my dd's name because I know about 3 dogs with the same name.
To add to that they (the animals) have taken jack, molly, Tyler, Millie and many more.
AIBU to think that pets should have pets names like socks, tigger, fluffy?

I just realised some people would lose their shit if they went to our shelter...

150 cat, ALL with human names (except for the ones sponsored and named after a beloved departed kitty)

paradisechick · 20/07/2012 04:52

When I was growing up the dog next door was called Deefor.

Deefor Dog.

NCIS · 20/07/2012 05:17

One of my sisters friends had a dog with the same name as my dd, and I had a dog with the same name as her dd. Made for interesting walks.
My FIL, who is ultra respectable, has a staffie called Daisy.

lovebunny · 20/07/2012 05:21

all my rabbits have 'people names' and so do most of the rabbits i know...

mine have proper names because when you go to the vet, some vets shout out the rabbit's name with your surname eg 'Fluffy Smith!' when it's your turn. rabbits in the past have been called 'hug' and 'snug', you can see why the current four each have real names!

used to think that when i retire, i'll have a dog call 'ruff'. so i can stand at the back door and shout 'ruff ruff! ruff ruff!' but after cleaning up after the rabbits i know i'll be having nothing bigger than a syrian hamster.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 20/07/2012 05:24

Our cat is called Tina - so called because she looks like Tina Turner.

DPs also only do human names for dogs and cats- so they've had Asma, Prudence, Shula and Bryn.

I actually would quite like to call DC2 Bryn, so trying to persuade mum to rename the dog Grin

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 20/07/2012 05:26

Lovebunny...My rabbits have human names too! Yay to find another rabbit lover!

nooka · 20/07/2012 05:57

My kids were taught rugby by a coach called Carling. I was a little surprised. I live in Canada so I don't think her parents called her after Will Carling (I think she is a bit too old in any case) or the beer either, but you never know.

Our cats have mostly come with their names attached, the only one that didn't ended up being called 'Slug' I doubt that anyone else has called either child or pet Slug (except perhaps for pets that actually are slugs!). He was a beautiful long haired ginger and white cat too. I felt very bad telling people his name but nothing else ever stuck.

ripsishere · 20/07/2012 06:29

YABU. One of my cats is called Terry. I doubt anyone in this day and age would call a child that though.

PuppyMonkey · 20/07/2012 06:40

I named my daughter after my friend's cat, Esme. Blush she didn't mind - the friend, not the cat.

Our cats over the years have been called Black Cat, Smudge, LaLa and Tilly.

Blackduck · 20/07/2012 06:42

Over the years we have had: Molly, tigger, cyd, skippy, Rosie, stray, snoopy (all cats).
I always wanted a dog called Deefer. Dp is very much for human names for dogs like Jack and Fred. Colleague has a cat called miaow....

ginghamfish · 20/07/2012 06:54

Kitten called Herman. Old man cat called Harry. They're happy.

RustyBear · 20/07/2012 06:54

I had hamsters called Fermat and Fibonacci (DH, then DP, was a Maths student)

Later hamsters were called Norah, because she was one, then Heidi and Spiller, for similar reasons.

We also had two Russian hamsters, who were named after the boss and another manager at DH's work. not going to tell the names because they are both unusual and possibly identifiable, but we named them because 'the manager' used to rush around being manically busy all the time and 'the boss' sat in a corner looking pretty and eating...

So I do give pets peoples' names, but only if they fit.

SquidgyBiscuits · 20/07/2012 06:56

We have fish. Lots of them. All have human names;
Daphne
CJ
Kevin
Chris
Judith
James
Jeremy
Richard
Stig
Alan
Mavis
Steve
Dylan (he's a crab)
Bruce
Brian
Fernando
Phil
Mikel
Tim
Stu
Ethel
Dot
Sanjay
Gupta

And to be honest I think it's weird enough to name all our fish, so the actual names are irrelevant.

I like human names. Cats called fluffy make me a bit sick in my mouth. Our cat is called Max. My boss is also called Max, but I've had the cat longer than the boss.

DaisySteiner · 20/07/2012 07:07

My dog is called Colin (the reason why will make sense to some TV fans Grin)

It suits him down to the ground, we've never had a negative comment about it except from my BIL who finds it slightly offensive (guess what his name is Wink)

catus · 20/07/2012 07:13

My cat is called Bruce, named after The Boss.

Binkyridesagain · 20/07/2012 07:19

My cats are named You and Greebo, if anyone would like to use them for their children, I won't mindSmile

AtLeastThatsWhatYouSaid · 20/07/2012 07:26

Normal pet names here....I think!

Cat - scrappy
Hamster - ham sandwich
Rabbit - horatio

Family friend has 3 whippets

Colin
Alan
Peter

exoticfruits · 20/07/2012 07:27

I love animals with human names.
I know cats called Lydia,Patrick, Percy, Rupert, Hermione and Hector
and dogs called Emily, Molly, Lucy and Dave
They are just the ones that spring to mind- I expect there are many more.
If I was naming one now I would have Elsie or Sidney.

exoticfruits · 20/07/2012 07:27

I forgot- my aunt's dog was Peter.

Chelvis · 20/07/2012 07:53

I know a hamster called Gareth

rogersmellyonthetelly · 20/07/2012 07:56

I had rabbits called odd socks and dimwit at one point. One had a full white leg and the other was a bit slow bless him. At least the vet could always work out which was which.

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 20/07/2012 07:56

Got some great name suggestions from this thread for my next cat! Grin (Still working on mum...)

LST · 20/07/2012 08:03

All my cats have got proper human names and when we have our dog he's getting called Tony Grin

sufferingfromcraft · 20/07/2012 08:06

I think I may have to trump everyone here, my mum had a cat called minge, she used to get me to call it in Blush

McKayz · 20/07/2012 08:10

Unless you're going to name your next child after a steam train then I guess you're safe.

The dog is called Gresley. DH drives steam trains as a hobby so that's where the name came from. Now we've met several people with dogs with the same name. But no children. Grin
