What makes you think it would be unreasonable to tell us this?

JeezyPeeps · 19/07/2012 14:32

What, all of them?

LemonBreeland · 19/07/2012 14:32

My Tesco is open 24/7. We don't have silly Sunday opening rules in Scotland.

AppleCrumbleAndFish · 19/07/2012 14:32

Ehh?

Seona1973 · 19/07/2012 14:33

ours open 24 hours too

derekthehamster · 19/07/2012 14:33

Our asda is only open 9-8 on Sundays - I think it's something to do with the olympics

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:35

Are they really? I had no idea (I knew that they were removing the restriction on Sunday opening hours for the Olympics, but just thought that was in the London area for some reason.

Oh good. That will remove the 'oh fuck there is nothing in the house and I only have an hour to sort it' which settles on me at 3.30 on a Sunday and I haven't been arsed to go to the shops all weekend.

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 14:35

Lots of 24/7 supermarkets here and huge supermarket never ever close supermarket garages, not even Christmas Day. A Spar shop too.

It is a good tip for people in smaller towns/rural locations :)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:39

There are loads of 24/7 shops round here, but they are joyless Tesco express shops and budgens and the like.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:39

I think though it will be the thin end of the wedge and will encourage supermarkets to lobby for the removal of the Sunday trading restriction.

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 14:43

I'd love it if Sainsbury's were open 24/7.Really annoys me that they close at 10pm here.

IShallWearMidnight · 19/07/2012 14:44

when the Sunday trading restrictions first came in, I was working in a shop which was open 7 days a week. We were supposed to get customers to sign a petition arguing against restrictions, and there were loads and loads of people who came into the shop (on a Sunday), and refused because they "didn't agree with Sunday trading". They couldn't see the difference between "Sunday trading" and "going into a shop to buy something on a Sunday".

trikken · 19/07/2012 14:46

I knew this, lots of family members work in there though.

OneHandFlapping · 19/07/2012 14:47

It's time we did get rid of the archaic Sunday Trading laws - for good.

It's only because a certain vocal minority want to assert their religious rights over the rest of us that they're still in force.

Keep Sunday special if you want to, but don't make the rest of us dance to your tune.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:51

I also think it is archaic to shut shops early on Sundays, a bit like the shops closing for half day Thursday in the small town I grew up in. I personally would welcome shops opening on Sundays all day.

However I think if you have shop opening on Sundays, this will bring in 24 hour opening on bank holidays and christmas. And I already think people going to the shops at 6am on Boxing Day are weirdos.

I wonder what retail workers think of this as well.

Creamtea1 · 19/07/2012 14:55

Get orf - the exact reason I felt the need to inform is that I do the saner on Sunday's at approx 4pm, when I declare there appears to be no food in the house and/or one of my 2 children decide to inform me their school trousers/shirt/plimsolls are lost or too small.
So it is a real bonus for me!
Agreed that i think it will be a tester to see if those hours can carry on after the Olympics.
So ianbu to tell you but iabu a little to say that for me it is the best thing to come out the Olympics..

OP posts:
SoleSource · 19/07/2012 14:57

Is this national or just London?

Creamtea1 · 19/07/2012 14:57
  • not sure what doing the saner is, but I meant do the same Iphone twat
OP posts:
ILoveApples · 19/07/2012 14:57

What about the people who have to work these hours? Those on new contracts are not paid any extra and many have to work every weekend anyway let alone during the Olympics. Surely the shops are already open enough hours as it is?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:57

It seems to be national sole - I have just checked my local Tesco and I live in Gloucestershire, so nowhere near London.

Creamtea1 · 19/07/2012 14:58

I am officially outside London do must be national. Mine is a 'big' tesco though

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:59

I don't know how shop worker contracts look - but agree it would be upsetting if your contract allows the management to suddenly give you a shift on (say) Sunday 4pm - 10pm without extra pay or notice.

Knowing the supermarket ethics I imagine that this is exactly what they can do.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 14:59

It is not 24 hours round here though - open 6am - 10pm on a Sunday.

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 15:01

I really hope they pay them a shift allowance. I hope it creates new jobs and tgey do not exploit anybody.

susiedaisy · 19/07/2012 15:02

Our huge tesco still shuts at 4pm on Sunday's here, so annoying!
