What I said in the title

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 15:53

I used to live in Cheltenham, but crossed over the M5 to get a bigger house for my money.

I think I lived her 2 years before I went shopping in Gloucester - used to drive over to Cheltenham for the most spurious reasons. Grin

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 15:55

Cheltenham house prices, Shock

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 15:56

I know. I lived in a rabbit hutch in Cheltenham and now have a detached house.

NiniLegsInTheAir · 19/07/2012 15:57

I admit I don't venture to Gloucester much for shopping, although the docks outlet is nice. If I come over to shop it's usually just for H&M (so looking forward to ours opening in Sept Grin). You do certainly get more house for your money there!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 15:57

What I mean is for the same price.

TBH I would rather live in the rabbit hutch, but I was being sensible, and I am a lot closer to work and London (on the train) now anyway.

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 15:58

I pronounce Cheltenham

Chelt - num

Is the correct pronunciation

Chelt - ten - ham

NiniLegsInTheAir · 19/07/2012 15:58

Go to add though, when you've lived in the South East Cheltenham house prices don't look so bad, at least we could afford to buy a place here in comparison. :)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 15:59

Yes - the only reason to shop in Gloucester is the H&M.

And. Um. That's it, I think. Oh and the Debenhams is a lot nicer than Cheltenham (not that that matters a bit because of Cavendish House).

There is NOWHERE to go out and eat in Gloucester, not in the whole entire city is there a decent restaurant. You have to go to Cheltenham, it is absolute madness.

WildWorld2004 · 19/07/2012 16:00

The only time our tesco closes is on christmas day & for a few hours at the weekend when the pubs close as they get a lot of hassle.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 16:00

Chelt-num.

Mind you, Cheltenham house prices are NOWT compared to Oxford which is only up the road.

And yes, compared to London everywhere seems reasonable.

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 16:01

The very first time I had an Argos catologue was from the Argos in Cheltenham. We were there for the races.

NiniLegsInTheAir · 19/07/2012 16:02

Cavendish House is a maze! I hate it in there, especially with a buggy.

Sole, think the posher folk say it Chelt-ten-ham. I certainly pronounce it as Chelt'num. Grin

Interesting about restaurants, not that I get to go to many these days.

And why oh why do London-bound trains change direction when they get to Gloucester? Forward-facing seats become backward-facing. It annoys me for some reason :)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 16:04

Cavendish House - scariest lifts in the world, they are like something from the 1930s (probably are).

Yes re the trains, also when coming back from London they stop at Gloucester for 10 minutes for the driver to change ends Hmm

Gloucester is a one way station for some reason, bloody dump it is as well.

Sorry everyone for Cheltenham based witterings Grin

NiniLegsInTheAir · 19/07/2012 16:07

Yes it's not in the spirit of this topic is it! Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/07/2012 16:09

Everyone else has buggered off Grin

HarrietSchulenberg · 19/07/2012 16:15

I used to work as a Saturday girl (and Friday night) at Sainsburys. When the shop started opening on Sundays staff had the option of working it or not, but it was double time so rather an attractive proposition.

I hear that now it's just standard for supermarkets, you don't get extra money as Sundays are included in your normal working hours. If you're contracted to work 35 hours you'll do them in 5 over 7 days regardless of what those days are.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/07/2012 16:20

harriet thats true. No extra for sundays, bank holidays etc. Just part of the contract now.

Trills · 19/07/2012 16:20

I remember getting a train through Gloucester with my (bad at travelling) mum.

We didn't understand why our reserved seats weren't marked as being either forward or backward facing.

We had to ask some people to swap with us because mum ".can't go backwards"

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 16:26

Are you married to a Dr. GetOrf is his name Foster?

Grin
Trills · 19/07/2012 16:28

Dr Foster went to Gloucester - he didn't live there.

NiniLegsInTheAir · 19/07/2012 16:28

Sole, my boss's surname is Foster. It annoys him immensely that he isn't a Dr, as he is actually from Gloucester Grin.

From what I can read online, this open till Midnight during the Olympics thing is only for Tesco and ASDA, unless others know differently?

SoleSource · 19/07/2012 16:38

Trills & Nini LOL

adeucalione · 19/07/2012 16:44

Mini - its a temporary change to Sunday trading laws, announced in the budget and running for 8 Sundays throughout the Olympics. It applies to all retailers over 280 sq m, so definitely not just Asda and Tesco, although they are amongst the first to announce that they will take advantage of it. Lots of shops doing it here, including M&S.

NiniLegsInTheAir · 19/07/2012 16:55

Doh, that'll be my local store included then! :(

Mandy2003 · 19/07/2012 20:25

Yes but why??!! What relationship does longer shopping hours have to the Olympics? Please tell me
