Because all the forrin types who come for the Olympics won't understand or like short opening hours on a Sunday. So we're opening for them mainly I reckon.

I'm in favour of it. I think permanently doing this would be good for the economy.

The relationship it has to the Olympics is to serve the many thousands of overseas tourists, who come from civilised societies where you can go to a shop after 5pm on a Sunday. I'm a hotelier, and honestly tourists cannot believe it when they're told our Sunday trading hours.

I don't really get why a shop worker would or should be paid more for working Sunday than any other day either. Plenty of jobs require weekend working whih forms the standard working hours of the job. Different for overtime or nights working but weekends should be standard in service industries.

And I hope it does lead to relaxed Sunday trading laws. It's so archaic to treat Sunday as some sacred day, because of religious bullshit.

Cheltnum/gloster people (excuse spelling Wink - am from Sarf London innit), I bet it is something to do with the dawn of the railways, the mid 1800's.

There's just me and DCat to cater for, so am not that bothered about opening times. Although, that said, I like a potter round our local Asda at stupid o'clock at night on a weekday

kellibabylove · 23/07/2012 01:09

The store I work at is open 9-8

Thank you for this OP. Just checked my local stores and you are right.

Feel stupid about taking five year old to a party late yesterday as I HAD to dash to Asda for some supplies

I'm a bit confused as to how extended opening can 'help the economy' or make more profit for supermarkets. Surely people only need so much loo roll etc so won't spend more over the week, but the retailers will have higher costs becaise of longer opening hours?
Also confused as to how many of you are 'annoyed' at not being able to go to a shop at 10 on a SUnday. Why do you want to (leaving aside the notion of need, as there clearly is no need)? I think there should be one day in the week when everyone has at least some time off (I'd be happy with the whole day) as a family friendly working practice, nothing to do with religion.

Spotted a sign outside our local Tesco with these new opening hours the other day.

But we live up north - no Olympic stuff up here except a bit of football (which seems to be pretty unpopular, as they said on the news the other night that they couldn't get rid of the tickets for it) - so I can't see how the Olympics is a valid reason for all the big Tesco's in our area being open longer on a Sunday. Surely most of the Olympic tourists will be in London?
