I'm a military mum.. ...I found out yesterday I'm being sent to work the Olympics for up to 7 weeks and will miss ds's 1st birthday!! On top if that I leave today and he's unwell. Could he be pIcking up on ny emotions? The guys I work with are not being supportive and nobody has even asked if everything is sorted with ds and childcare etc. I'm really upset and stressed. Going to stock up on calpol for dh while I'm away. Gutted!!!! :-(

I do have every sympathy for you so please - reschedule his first party for when you get back. He won't know! We did this last year for DS 6th birthday as he was having an operation the day before his real birthday. You can still make the memories, you just need to be a little bit creative around the calendar.

Thanks for helping make the Olympics safe, I hope you have a brilliant time and a brilliant time with your baby when you get back.

TheHappyHissy · 19/07/2012 17:44

Another huge thank you from me. Hugs to you and your ds.

Could I just add my voice to the other mumsnetters?

  1. While YANBU to be upset by this, your DC won't notice that you've missed his birthday, I promise you. Make arrangements to have a second "birthday" celebration when you're able.

  2. My first thought when I heard about the G4S cock-up was for the soldiers who would have to give up their hard-earned, much deserved leave. You have my complete sympathy and I'm very sorry this has happened.

  3. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE AND SERVICE. There. I've said it. Not enough people do. I'm not in the military, but nevertheless, I salute you.

GhostShip · 19/07/2012 19:53

It's not bloody fair that a lot of my friends who are military have had their leave cancelled because they need to be security. I really do sympathise with you OP.

I those saying 'thems the breaks' and all that... well it shouldn't be, but private security firm G4S are that bloody incompetent that we have to use our army to basically be stewards and doormen.

JuliaScurr · 19/07/2012 20:13

I'm appalled by this 'you knew what you were letting yourself in for', 'you want equality', 'suck it up, at leastit's not a war zone'. Do you think that attitude is how we got maternity leave? Equal Pay Act? Anything?
Of course OP's upset, she's missing her dc's 1st b'day because an overpaid incompetent private firm fucked up. They treat their workers like shit, resulting in inadequate cover, so the public sector steps in at short notice. It's not good enough to treat people like OP and all the G4S workers so badly.
Hope you have a good time with dc later on.

thegreylady · 19/07/2012 20:35

YANBU to be upset. I am sorry that a security firm's incompetence has meant that our armed forces are having to do a job they didn't sign up for. I hope someone will make a lovely video of your baby's birthday and perhaps you can have a party when the wretched Olympics are over.

pigletpower · 20/07/2012 00:37

Sorry I don't get it what is the OP? A military wife or non soldier role? I don't understand.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/07/2012 01:00

She said she is not army she could be navy or airforce.

pigletpower · 20/07/2012 21:45

Ah right I understand now, sorry OP! I'll just get my coat...

chilled7up · 20/07/2012 22:11

You have every right to feel sad about it. Any mother would and 7 weeks is a very long time.

About the birthday I know it won't be the same but you can alway celebrate it later. My DS had his first birthday party 2 months late Grin it wont make any difference for him at that age. But I can understand how you feel.
