to not sensor my Facebook statuses...

All of my friends on Facebook are people who know me personally so they (should) know I have a slightly odd sense of humour yet people insist on moaning about comments which I just don't see as offensive.

I think we need an example.

If you know that some of your friends might be offended, would it not be tactful to maybe keep some of your comments to yourself?

MardyBra · 18/07/2012 10:18

Yes examples please, so we can judge see your kooky sense of humour.

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:22

But I don't see how it can offend people...

For example this morning I look on my newsfeed and see 4 pictures of tattoos from people in different parts of the UK.

Everyone of them was bold italic gothic writing (Childs name) and d.o.b underneath on their wrist and this is to match the already 7 people I know with the exact style so of course one thought came to mind... I said

"x is starting to wonder if wrist tattoos are now government issue, I now know 11 standard issuees... Are work camps making a return or something?"

Chubfuddler · 18/07/2012 10:23

I would get a better class of fb friends. I don't know anyone with a tattoo like that.

Losingitall · 18/07/2012 10:26

You can put what you want as status updates.

Your"friends" can too.

That's the beauty of it!Grin

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:26

Nothing kooky mardy sometimes I'm ashamed of my sense of homour tbh but these are my friends they knower me and have accepted or share my humour.

now I should add that none I'd the replies made reference to the work camp part just about the horror that their tattoos ate not bespoke a each one claims to have designed it for themselves...

OP posts:
cheekybarsteward · 18/07/2012 10:28

Haw, haw, haw I totally agree but you are going to get soooo slated!
People like these for some reason, probably didn't get too much knowledge of prisoner of war camps shoved down their neck as a child like I did.

MardyBra · 18/07/2012 10:29

Unfortunately, your comments about wrist tattoos and workcamps would bring up connotations of concentration camps to me. So I would be offended, I'm afraid.

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:30

Chub they are from all walks of life some rich, some not so (bit like me really) its just baffling ;-)

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 18/07/2012 10:31

Just a thought, but if a lot of people are saying it, perhaps your status are inappriopriate and offensive.

If people complain, and it bothers you - defriend them. Not hard.

squeakytoy · 18/07/2012 10:32

You know you are are being offensive. Think it, dont post it, and you wont be insulting your friends.

GiserableMitt · 18/07/2012 10:32

I have a list called "RUDE" and I've added the names of kids on my FB friends list as well as adults who I think may be a little Shock or Hmm by some of the stuff that I find funny.
If I'm posted a status or a picture that I think might offend a few then I set the Custom option so that those of my RUDE list can't see the photo or status.

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:33

Yes mardy I would understand that and did kind of oops when I set it but not one of 9 replies has even acknowledged that... I would apologise and offer to remove if they did but they are too just getting shocked that their new scars are not a new trend :o

OP posts:
BonnieBumble · 18/07/2012 10:35

I would find that status funny but I don't have any tattoos. Lots of my fb friends are losing the plot when it comes to tattoos, some of their latest ones are God Damn awful. I can't say anything obviously but a little part of me dies everytime I see another snake up the leg or Rose on their stomach with their children's name on.

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:35

Crappy grammar/spelling a have to use phone ATM and have no idea how to turn predictive Swype off, do apologise.

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/07/2012 10:36

Can you expand on what you mean by 'sensor'?

MrsCarriePooter · 18/07/2012 10:36

If one of your real life friends proudly showed you their new wrist tattoo, and privately you thought, "Oh no, not another one with no imagination" would you actually say that out loud instead of admiring it politely? I can understand why you've hurt their feelings - surely you don't need a degree in empathy to see they think it's special and aren't going to take kindly to that kind of comment, never mind the unfortunate Nazi images brought up by the work camp comment.

I'm afraid that sometimes saying you've just got a kooky sense of humour just means you're not funny to anyone but yourself.

tattoo comments - fine (even if it's a little judgemental)

Concentration camp reference - very poor taste.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 18/07/2012 10:40

So in other words, you know its offensive, but your friends are the ones who should just suck it up, rather than you apologise, delete said post and admit that actually you really should think more about stuff you post on fb.

Pride. Fall.

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:40

I haven't said the tattoos aren't nice (infect I hate them) but I did tell one of them I think they are smart but I know a lot of people with the same design and want sure if it was the tattooists decision.

They are my RL friends its just that some of us have moved areas etc but they know me personally and how I am.

OP posts:
HmmThinkingAboutIt · 18/07/2012 10:43

Even if they do know you, it doesn't matter.

How you communicate and how it is read is very different to verbal communication. Its wise to learn how certain things do not translate well in written form... sarcasm and jokes are shaky ground.

upleduff · 18/07/2012 10:45

If anyone was offended by the offensive part then yes I would delete but their not as I've said, I now realise the work camp part was a bit past the mark but no one seems bothered by that as they know I don't mean it in an offensive way

They are genuinely just pissed that others have the same tattoo when they designed out by themselves... 10 comments saying I picked the font from the computer and style myself yet each one is the same Hmm
