You know the type cake making, knitting, cup cakes, carding etc. Generally SAHMs whos kids are now at school and feel the need to go back into work but can't really be bothered. They pick up some hobby that people have diplomaticaly said they are good at and think it can be a business. Only know one person who actually has a talent for their business choice, all of the others would be better just asking for cash directly rather than palming off sub standard products onto polite friends. Same goes for all of that pampered chef and candle party lot who are even more deluded. My first post on mumsnet but this stuff really annoys me!

(unlike friends of hers who married well or inherited who DID do these "jobs" instead of real ones for years, they wouldn't have been able to had they been responsible for magicing their own rent and school uniforms and food etc like my mum had to with noone substidising her holistic massage buisness!)

Butterfly, pretty much this entire thread has made the distinction between what the OP means by "Mummy Business" and an actual business run on proper terms by a woman. Yours is the latter.

I don't think the OP's term is misogynistic at all. If anything, the fundamental setup of these faux-businesses is misogynistic, in that they undermine proper, female-run ventures which are not reliant on being bankrolled by a man.

EXACTLY! using the term mumpreneur or mummybuisness to describe ANY buisness woman who is a mum, is like saying "aww look at the ickly woman playing at having a little business.. bless!"

you don't have a business unless its a real buisness, I'm not a doctor because I give LOs calpol and plasters! If you DO run a proper declared profitable buisness you are a BUISNESS PERSON or buisness woman or sole trader etc

Matt its not au pair - its related to selling information they have to people moving into our area an area where wealthy people often relocate to and when they are shelling out £££ for a house they are prepared to shell out £ to people who can tell them where the good areas/schools are etc.
