In thinking they can sodding well drink water for the week?

I'm on holiday with the inlaws for the week Shock (no comment). Anyway, we are splitting the cost of everything 3 ways (three families, makes sense). We did a huge shop on Sunday morning (ie less than 48 hours ago) for the whole week and agreed that we would try and not buy anything else (it came to ?350).

Come this morning, DH serves himself a glass of coke and I ask if I can have a glass too, he gives me his glass saying that there's no more left Hmm . I say we'll just be drinking water for rest of the week then, queue MIL starting a new shopping list with coke at the top. I say to both DH and MIL that it's not really a basic necessity and I'm sure we don't need to go shopping again so soon for coke (knowing full well the bill will end up being another hundred ? or so). So MIL adds fruit juice and coffee to the list too.

DH is constantly nagging me about not being able to afford things, AIBU in telling him if we buy more bloody coke, I do not want to hear any more comments about not being able to afford things when we're in the chocolate isle at the supermarket Angry ?

Going on holiday with other people is (nearly always) a bad idea...!

BedHog · 17/07/2012 11:26

Sounds like nobody planned the shopping very well if you've run out of all drinks except water.

I'm not a fan of coke, but water tastes minging so I'd be really pissed off (and dehydrated probably) if I was forced to drink it for the entire holiday.

Is your family not capable of doing a small shop for a few necessary items? Confused

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2012 11:26

Jeez chill out!

It's a bottle of coke

You're on holiday

Live life on the edge for the week

CuttedUpPear · 17/07/2012 11:31

A little more about coca cola.
Of course, you may be buying shop own brand.

MsElisaDay · 17/07/2012 11:33

"water tastes minging"... EH? What, are you six years old?
Fizzy drinks are not cheap, nor are they a necessity. I'd leave them to drink water for the rest of the week rather than fork out for more bottles of that expensive shite.
(besides, depending on where you are in Europe, you can probably get boxes of table wine for a couple of euros, which is far more fun. And probably necessary).

Sirzy · 17/07/2012 11:33

I agree with bedhog - you need to plan it a bit better.
If your worried about a big bill go shopping alone and just get what you need

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 11:34

I have said I'll agree to more coke on the condition that DH stops nagging me about expensive nice chocolate.

Oh, and it's not just one bottle of coke, they've got through a pack of six bottles in two days...

Have done self-catering hols with friends, helps to have agreed some idea of eating in / out ratios and possible menus beforehand.

People will always have different priorities and you'll end up buying things you don't eat that others want and have some stuff left over but, still so much cheaper over all to cook together and split the costs. For a few smallish things, let it go.

If you have wildly different expectations of holiday catering, you need a discussion about what's paid for through the kitty and what's personal.

god it is just cola you are on holiday let them go to the shop and get what they want/need, and next year go alone you sound frazzled .

WrigglyWorm · 17/07/2012 11:39

I would need to be mixing that coke with vodka to be holidaying with my inlaws. Buy some WINE at the supermarket! And good luck!

ontheedgeofwhatever · 17/07/2012 11:39

Unless you have serious financial problems, loosen the purse strings this week enjoy your holiday and drink water when you get home. There's no point wrecking your holiday over a few extra pounds on food.

What do you spend in a normal week for groceries for your family? I always find that we spend at least half as much again if not more when on self catering holiday - bigger breakfasts, more being drunk, children staying up later, more likely to snack etc etc. You've got 3 families to cater for so try looking at the figures from that point of view.

If you are in financial problems then YANBU and your DH should support you in trying to keep spending reasonably low (would still get the coke though not worth the battle)

lottiegb · 17/07/2012 11:40

Also, you will inevitably need a mid-week top-up shop, however well you planned. In fact I'd have planned to do one, as it lets you adjust quantities in response to consumption.

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 11:41

We're in France and no one in the family drinks wine...

fruitysummer · 17/07/2012 11:43

6 bottles of coke in 2 days between 3 families does not really sound that excessive.

Is there anything else to drink besides that? I.e juice, lemonade?

Is it because coke is a novelty so everyone has been a bit greedy?

I'd just go buy more.

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2012 11:45

Really OP this is such a non issue for a family on holiday.

I'm guessing there are other issues that are stressing you out?

KatherineKavanagh · 17/07/2012 11:46

Why didn't you get coffee and juice on Sunday?

And who is 'they' with regards to drinking 6 bottles of coke?

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 11:47

I haven't been allowed near the kitchen or the shops, DH and SIL want to be in control of that because they know what everyone eats (huuuuuge eating disorders for several members of the family), so I agreed to that, but it just pisses me right off when I get footed with a huge bill which panders to the needs of a few very fussy people, but when I dare ask for some decent chocolate I am given some cheap stuff because we can't afford the stuff I like.

OP posts:
VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 11:49

There are ten of us, two adults who drink coke, my kids aren't allowed any, two other kids are allowed one glass a day. Seems like a hell of a lot of coke for 2 people (no novelty issue here,it's all they drink at home too).

OP posts:
Sirzy · 17/07/2012 11:50

Why did you agree to holiday together/split funds if it is such an issue?

onewetdogowner · 17/07/2012 11:50

You're in France and no body drinks wine????????????

What is wrong with you people?

I'm in shock. That's all I'd be drinking!

Sirzy · 17/07/2012 11:51

Well as you asked your DH to pour you a glass of coke I guess that makes you and him to adults who are drinking it all?

dreamingbohemian · 17/07/2012 11:52

why would anyone holiday in france if they don't drink wine? Wink

Honestly, though, I'd just try to let it go. They're wrong, you're right, but it's not worth the aggro over a chocolate bar.

dreamingbohemian · 17/07/2012 11:52

ha, cross-post with onewet

pictish · 17/07/2012 11:53

Oh Christ - they can buy another bottle of coke if they want!
