In thinking they can sodding well drink water for the week?

I'm on holiday with the inlaws for the week Shock (no comment). Anyway, we are splitting the cost of everything 3 ways (three families, makes sense). We did a huge shop on Sunday morning (ie less than 48 hours ago) for the whole week and agreed that we would try and not buy anything else (it came to ?350).

Come this morning, DH serves himself a glass of coke and I ask if I can have a glass too, he gives me his glass saying that there's no more left Hmm . I say we'll just be drinking water for rest of the week then, queue MIL starting a new shopping list with coke at the top. I say to both DH and MIL that it's not really a basic necessity and I'm sure we don't need to go shopping again so soon for coke (knowing full well the bill will end up being another hundred ? or so). So MIL adds fruit juice and coffee to the list too.

DH is constantly nagging me about not being able to afford things, AIBU in telling him if we buy more bloody coke, I do not want to hear any more comments about not being able to afford things when we're in the chocolate isle at the supermarket Angry ?

Well, if other people get 'special' stuff, so do you, that's only fair. Everyone needs to be fed and to enjoy a similar number of treats. The beauty of sharing costs is that, within reason, it does all even out.

redrubyshoes · 17/07/2012 11:56

I think Coke is a waste of good water. Wink

squeakytoy · 17/07/2012 11:56

I would say loosen up a bit, you are meant to be on holiday, not rations.

ontheedgeofwhatever · 17/07/2012 11:56

Sorry misread your first post. YADNBU to want decent chocolate especially if you don't drink wine - you need something to get you through a week with in laws. If they won't buy it for you just go off and buy it yourself

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2012 12:00

I hope you can get passed this non issue OP.

But seriously, I can't think of a more miserable and petty sounding situation here.

Nip to the shop, but some more coke and grab yourself a chocolate bar.

Job done.

onewetdogowner · 17/07/2012 12:00

I'm sure that I've seen people mixing coke and cheap wine in France.
Perfectly acceptable.

Oh and I remember my French friend (who was very slim) used to have a bar of chocolate on bagette for lunch.

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 12:04

We're holidaying in France because we live here (doesn't make not drinking wine any less ironic though).

6 bottles of coke, in a hot country in the summer, in 3 days? no Shock

But really, if that's all you have to complain about while you are on holiday with other people, then you must be having an absolutely brilliant time.

Unhelpful but I stopped drinking Coca- Cola in 2010. It is was very addictive. I drink water now and one glass of milk per day. Coca-Cola didn't quench my thirst so I would drink more. I think that is why it goes so quickly. I used to drink two to three litres per day!! Gross.

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 12:11

Oh I give up, most people seem to think it's fine that we spend 4? a day on crap filled fizzy stuff and I am not entitled to one bar of decent chocolate.

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2012 12:13

Viking are you not an adult?

If you want a bar of chocolate, go and bloody buy yourself one!

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 12:14

I enjoy the occasional glass of the afore mentioned fizzy crap, but I don't drink it to quench my thirst and don't understand why people won't drink water when they're thirsty.

pictish · 17/07/2012 12:15

For Christ's sake - go and buy yourself a bar of chocolate then! No-one is stopping you! They can buy coke and you can buy chocolate!
How ridiculous!

I would not like to go on holiday with you. Sounds so rigid, petty and joyless.

Sirzy · 17/07/2012 12:15

Exactly worra. She is starting to sound like a 3 year old who can't have ice cream!

pictish · 17/07/2012 12:15

What an absolute non isuue.

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 12:17

Worra that is my whole point, the only shop is the supermarket, I'm not "allowed" to go shopping because I might spend too much and not buy things people want. Plus I think I should be allowed to put something on the list without being told we can't afford it by DH, only to have him buy a zillion bottles of coke for him and his bloody sister.

Oh I'm allowed ice cream, plenty of that here.

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2012 12:19

Ok, what's French for 'Leave the Bastards'?

pictish · 17/07/2012 12:19

Yes you are allowed to go. Who is going to stop you? Really....who?

This is preposterous. Grow up OP.

EdgarAllenPimms · 17/07/2012 12:19

YABU to drink Coke as an adult.
YABU to get whingey about chocolate too.

gavel<

didn't you buy any tea/coffee and milk? or squash even?

it is fizzy sugar filled acidic shite.

thestringcheesemassacre · 17/07/2012 12:22

For the love of god, take yourself to the shop and buy whatever chocolate you like. Let the others drink the COKE.

Its a holiday! Chin up.

VikingVagine · 17/07/2012 12:22

Hmm, good question, think the subtly might get lost in translation. Something along the lines of " quitter l'enfoiré" might do it.
