To have been shocked at seeing a *padded* bra for a 6-7 year old?

In matalan earlier look for swim shorts for ds1 when I walked past the kids underwear section and saw this little bra type top, thought it looked a bit stiff so touched it only to find padding, it was for a 6-7 year old.

Now I've seen little bras and knickers where the pattern would be more at home Kat Slater from Eastenders knicker drawer but padded? Come on!

YANBU at all

DD is 8 and wants one and can't understand why I said no

AgentZigzag · 14/07/2012 17:20

I agree, it's worth emailing them about it, they shouldn't be left thinking everyone's OK with them.

MothershipG · 14/07/2012 17:21

YANBU

KatherineKavanagh · 14/07/2012 17:22

Girls are developing earlier

You do know they are made padded to protect emerging breastbuds don't you??

KatherineKavanagh · 14/07/2012 17:22

Some pre teens wear age 6-7... YABU

eslteacher · 14/07/2012 17:25

I just saw one of these in my local supermarket about two hours ago when I was doing the weekly shop! And felt similarly disgusted. Why, why, why is there a demand for this?

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 14/07/2012 17:26

6 yesr old in my dds class wears a bra, she is a thin flat chested little girl just the rest. I was assumuning it was a half vest crop top thing when my dd said, but when were in peacocks dd points out an actaul bra and says x has that bra and that one and ponts out a couple more. Hmm why would someone even put a 6 year old in a bra.

UserNameNotAvailable · 14/07/2012 17:26

I've just tried to find it online but they only have either cotton crop tops or starter bras. I'm hoping it had been put on the wrong hanger but it certainly looked small enough to fit my dd who is nearly 5.

Crop tops I don't have a problem with (age appropriate ,not leopard print etc) even though dd doesn't have any and isn't likely to ever have any.

"Some pre teens wear age 6-7... YABU"

I'm not sure that a bra top like this is suitable for a preteen either.

Pedigree · 14/07/2012 17:28

I suppose there is a demand because girls' parents are buying them.

KatherineKavanagh · 14/07/2012 17:28

Why? Don't you remember the pain of breast buds?I do.

My dd started developing at 8,she was a teeny little thing who would probably have still been in age7 clothing!

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 14/07/2012 17:29

if they made bras appropriatly sized for pre teens there would be no need for a pre teen to wear a bra aged 6 or even manufacturers to make bras aged 6.

Why label them age wise anyway, surely pree teens as much as adults should be wearing appropriatly measured bras for thier size in inches and cup and not age.

Bunbaker · 14/07/2012 17:30

"Why? Don't you remember the pain of breast buds?I do."

No. It was far too long ago Grin

lovebunny · 14/07/2012 17:30

that is disgusting. we should protest.

Debeezandbirds · 14/07/2012 17:30

Shocked, yes, saddened, no.

There is a market for stuff like this. I remember a day out to the beach with a three year old in a bikini being told she looked sexy by her parents.

So glad I have a boy so he doesn't ask for stuff like this but on the other side of the coin I worry he'll grow up thinking all girls should dress like this.

I think a mass emailing from mumsnet about the disgusting practice of the sexualisation(sp?) of young girls may be in order. From my example earlier some parents don't know any better than to do this to their children. I mean if someone came up and told you your small child looked sexy you'd be calling the police!

KatherineKavanagh · 14/07/2012 17:31

Cup sizes for breast buds? Confused

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 14/07/2012 17:32

was it labeled 6 - 7 Op or diod you think it would fit a 6-7 year old? i thought from your Op was labeled 6-7?

UserNameNotAvailable · 14/07/2012 17:32

At that age I didn't have padded bras and was more than likely still wearing a vest, I started my periods at 9 so I know how early girls can develop. Maybe that's where it all went tits up (excuse then pun) for me as I had very large and pendulous boobs from about 18 and now at the grand old age of 34 have had a breast reduction and now have smaller more pert boobs (I won't take off my sports bra for more than the time it takes to shower/dress incase they end up round my ankles overnight Grin

I was in a cup sized bra as a pree teen. I was a b cup at aged 10 and c cup at aged 11.

MadamFolly · 14/07/2012 17:37

There were no padded bras available for young girls when I started developing age 9. I had to wear the crop tops.

I would have loved a padded bra because everytime something brushed up against my buds it was agony.

They are hardly push up bras or gel bras, just a normal bra with thicker cups for protection and to stop the nipple being so obvious. YABU.

itsthequietones · 14/07/2012 17:37

Pedigree - If it wasn't being sold there probably wouldn't be a demand for it.

Wasn't there something like this a couple of years ago - Tesco/Asda/Primark, or the like, selling padded bras for children. I think they withdrew them in the end. I could be wrong though....

UserNameNotAvailable · 14/07/2012 17:40

TheEnthusiasticTroll, the hanger was 6-7, along with the hangers behind but I didn't get to actually look at the label on the bra as ds1 was moaning to get the shorts and go. I think on another post I said it was possible to be on the wrong hanger but unless I go back and look ill never know if it was or not.

Padded bras are really good for developing breasts which are often odd sizes and sore. Crop tops are really uncomfy and can ride up.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 14/07/2012 17:43

I remember wanting pads as a pre-teen as well. I ended up taping cotton wool inside my clothes.

Seriously, yes, some clothes are inappropriate but unless it's actually a bust-enhancing push up job, a bit of padding is GOOD.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 14/07/2012 17:43

I understand now. it wouldnt surprise me if it was on the correct hanger.
