Will poor people be involved/have tickets for the London Olympics?

Stratford is in Newham - one of the most deprived borough in London. No one that I know who lives there/ works there, have tickets or are participating in the celebrations. They can't afford to.

Why is there no uproar? so many Newham/East London kids will not be a part of something that will be happening in their own doorstep.

what a strange thread.. I live close to many sporting events, but I can rarely afford the tickets for them...

going to the olympics is hardly going to make a difference to anyones life other than those actually taking part

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/07/2012 16:52

I think the point is that most sporting events are paid for by ticket sales and sponsorship. The taxpayer has put several billion into the Olympics, therefore it is not unreasonable to expect to be able to attend this event we have a paid for.

But if every single Londoner was given a free or subsidised ticket, there'd be no room for anyone else!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/07/2012 16:57

I know nothing about East London. My comments were merely to those under the misapprehension that debit cards were available to all.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/07/2012 16:58

WorraLiberty not every single Londoner, it should really be every single tax payer :)

AmberLeaf · 14/07/2012 16:59

What itsallgoingtobefine said.

I don't know anyone who's going.

Pretty much the first thing that turned me into an olympics 2012 hater was the fact that I was instantly excluded from even attempting to get tickets by the way it was organised. I could not afford to spend that much at once and most people had to try to buy more than one set of tickets as you weren't guaranteed getting them.

Of all thhe people (londoners) I know who tried none got any tickets.

Some were apparently given to my DCs high school but they were given out willy nilly for no good reason and I don't know how many they got.

Were all schools given them? Even primaries?

belleMarie · 14/07/2012 17:02

That is not true that all Newham schools have received free tickets for events the children. Maybe for a few children, but certainly not for all. If that was the case, I would not have made this thread.

I just think it would have been a wonderful chance for the ALL the children of Newham to be fully involved in this rather than most being left on the side-way with no chance of being involved in their home town celebrations.

If there are cheap tickets available, I will buy and happily donate to kids in Newham...it's just knowing how to go about doing it and who I approach.

Itsallgoingtobefine. I can see how that would be a massive problem if you don't have a permanent address, but i didn't think we were discussing specifically homeless people. Most poor people i know fortunately have council flats or houses. They all have debit and credit cards. The banks practically throw them at them! Hmm

PooPooInMyToes · 14/07/2012 17:06

If they gave free tickets to everyone in newham then what about people in the other surrounding areas?

AmberLeaf · 14/07/2012 17:09

Londoners in all areas should have had access to cheaper and priority tickets if not free.

The kids tickets for the wheelchair basketball finals were £5

Nancy66 · 14/07/2012 17:10

How many school children are there in Newham? Of course they can't all be involved.

AmberLeaf · 14/07/2012 17:14

I don't see why not nancy?

How many do the stadiums hold? How many events?

But no they just saved most tickets for corperate sponsers didn't they.

PooPooInMyToes · 14/07/2012 17:21

Why should Londoners get free or cheaper tickets? That's hardly fair on the rest of the country (and that comes from a Londoner)

AmberLeaf · 14/07/2012 17:26

Poopoo because londoners are paying for it through and increase in council tax/reduction in spending in other areas and the general inconvenience of holding a major event like this in a densely populated city.

AmberLeaf · 14/07/2012 17:27

homas Cook are selling packages for 3 nights in a 4* hotel for £2699 per Person

Is that £2699 as in two thousand six hundred and niney nine? Or twenty six pounds ninety nine pence?!

Nancy66 · 14/07/2012 17:27

a large per centage of the population of Newham won't be paying tax though

AmberLeaf · 14/07/2012 17:28

Poopoo the rest of the country can take it or leave it. Londoners don't have a choice.

Blardy hell!

Maybe I should put up a tent in the garden for me and the kids and run a little B&B for the olympic period!

grovel · 14/07/2012 17:33

Why would poor people want to go to the Olympics? They need their money for beer and fags.
