My DS starts primary school in September and we have not received any details of what the school uniform is from the school other than to provide us with an order form for school jumpers. Fortunately I have been on maternity leave and have seen some of the school children walk past the house so can probably guess. Maybe I am just being an over anxious new parent but seriously, you would at least expect the school to put details of what the school uniform is in the new parent pack or AIBU???

I would phone the school and ask for a copy of the school uniform list - maybe there was supposed to be one in your new parent pack and it got left out?

sensuallettuce · 12/07/2012 20:05

School website?

AlmostAHipster · 12/07/2012 20:07

Is there not a parents/carers intake evening to inform you of exactly this? I went to one last night - I've never heard of a school not doing them tbh.

Otherwise, I'd ring the school and ask them.

MammaTJ · 12/07/2012 20:12

Unreasonable of them not to tell you!! Also very odd.

Also unreasonable of you not to just ask!! That is not so odd though.

numbum · 12/07/2012 20:30

Have you not had an induction evening? Sounds a bit unusual!

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 12/07/2012 20:30

We went to the new parents evening and apart for selling jumpers - nothing. We've asked 3 seperate people at the school if we are missing something from our pack and they say we aren't. When we ask about the uniform we are just told "oh a white polo shirt and grey trousers will be fine". No info on shoes, coats, summer wear etc....

YANBU - DS's school has details on school website, and information was also provided in new starter's pack.

Have you checked their website?

MammaTJ · 12/07/2012 20:34

Sounds a bit slack of the school and that is from the slackest mum in the city of Slackdome!!

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 12/07/2012 20:46

No not on the website either ...

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 12/07/2012 20:47

Since it's primary, maybe that's as far as the uniform regulations go?

TheHappyHissy · 12/07/2012 20:54

It sounds like you have the bulk of the info for the day to day, but you will need:

Jumper - known
Shirts - known
Trousers/Shorts - known
Socks - colour?
Shoes - black? usually non-trainers
Coats - Ours gives no guidance on this

PE Kit:
T-shirt - colour?
Shorts - colour?
Plimsolls - check if they use them, ours don't until the summer terms

Our school has no different summer uniform for boys, as it usually is shorts and removing the jumper to wear only the polo shirt

Why not call the school office? Ask them what is missing from the above.

I'm just being anal aren't I??

YANBU, if they are relaxed about uniform, that should be made clear, as you're the one who'll be out of pocket replacing 'incorrect' uniform when term starts. Though being honest, it does sound like they're just very relaxed about it all.

TheHappyHissy · 14/07/2012 08:38

Schools are notoriously CRAP at communicating with the outside world....

LisaMed · 14/07/2012 09:20

Don't get me started on schools...

... and the 20% off school wear at M&S has just finished. I kitted out ds from there for next year. But I can also really recommend George for school stuff. It has worn really well for me.

molepom · 14/07/2012 12:21

I second George at ASDA, their stuff has been brilliant the past year, I just wish the kids hadn't grown out of them so quick.

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 14/07/2012 12:38

Our school uniform is

black, grey or blue trousers, skirt, dress or shorts
blue, white or yellow polo shirt, shirt, or blouse
socks and shoes - whatever you like as long as they can run in them
indoor shoes - whatever you like as long as kept only for indoor use
PE kit - officialy navy shorts but whatever, really ...
summer uniform - girls can wear a gingham school dress in any colour at all

The only bit they're bothered about is the school logo jumper and the school logo pe tshirt.

whatthewhatthebleep · 14/07/2012 13:09

most school uniform is quite uniform lol...you only need the right colour for jumper/sweatshirt/cardigan

Most schools have logo, polo tops, sweatshirts/jumpers and jackets

shoes are sensibly black/non trainers or logos on
PE is usually black plimsoles, t-shirt and navy/black shorts

It's quite straightforward really...just need jumper/sweatshirt/cardigan colour and you're sorted!!

Maybe the school assume most people will have spotted these things...and maybe they don't 'tell' parents what to get as not all families can manage to follow a 'list' and feel it may create pressure on families...some kids at my DS school often seem to wear joggers albeit black and navy...and trainers, not everyone can afford to get proper school uniform and use everyday clothing...maybe just manage the right colour for jumper/sweatshirt iyswim and the school appreciate this dilema and don't therefore 'tell' parents ...it's not an absolute anymore... for the above reason's....I think Confused Smile

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2012 13:10

Just ring the school and ask for an exact list

Job done.

lovebunny · 14/07/2012 16:33

when you speak to the school, ask for a meet with the reception teacher. daughter had been at school for weeks and kept telling me about not having 'lunch' - but she had her school 'dinner'. turned out 'lunch' was the word used for a mid-morning snack and my daughter was the only child with no money to buy one.
secrets like that you need to know from the silly bint reception teacher who doesn't know the word 'elevenses'. or the word 'snack'.

MushroomSoup · 14/07/2012 16:55

Can I just point out that uniform at primary level is not compulsory which is why most schools just have the logoed jumper and leave the grey/black/navy bit to parents. And they can't complain if DCs are NOT in logoed jumpers.

MushroomSoup · 14/07/2012 16:56

And I know this cos I'm a primary head!!

jalopy · 14/07/2012 17:15

You need to know where the Lost Property box is.
