There is a watch thread function, if you want to lurk.

Of if you must, at least add a phrase of support or something for the OP.

You are right.

It is rubbernecking. How much would it take for someone to type 'I am sorry' or something.

MardyBra · 12/07/2012 15:35

Actually I know IANBU. Wink Just ranting. Saw it just now.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/07/2012 15:37

HA! Sorry. Couldn't resist Grin

In my defense that is the first time I have ever done that.

squeakytoy · 12/07/2012 15:37

completely unnecessary on any thread as there is a function called bookmark..

cuntflapwankbadger · 12/07/2012 15:37

I thought it was used as a 'bump' not a marker.

Noqontrol · 12/07/2012 15:37

Depends what the topic is i guess.

MardyBra · 12/07/2012 15:37

Show me a bit of respect Hearts!

Noqontrol. I agree it depends on the topic. Quite often people will mark space in a non-sensitive thread, which is fair enough imo.

slartybartfast · 12/07/2012 15:38

bump Wink

no agree

either say something helpful or sympathetic, or simply Watch the thread.

ElephantsCanRemember · 12/07/2012 15:39

It is awful. Same as when a poster types "bump" 1 minute after the previous message.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 12/07/2012 15:40

I don't think it is really acceptable anywhere tbh. If you do it on a thread about slingbacks you are a dull git, if you do it on a sensitive thread you are thoughtless.

.

DowagersHump · 12/07/2012 15:41

I agree

SaraBellumHertz · 12/07/2012 15:45

I started a similar thread under a previous name and was Shock how many people thought it was acceptable - like you really can't be bothered to type "how awful" in at least a cursory attempt to hide your rubber necking

QuickLookBusy · 12/07/2012 15:45

Tis very rude.

Pascha · 12/07/2012 16:00

I always assumed it was a relic from the days before bookmarking ( which I just remember). I presume the offenders are stuck in the dark ages on MN classic unable to work out what the rest of us are talking about. Nevertheless it is very very rude and shows those posters up. I have never done it.

StealthPolarBear · 12/07/2012 16:20

I admit I posted quite a lot of "x" on Ailidh and Expat's threads. It was following posts where I had attempted to say what I was thiking/feeling and indicated I had nothing further to add but was still thinking of them. Writing "I have nothing to say but am still thinking about you" seemed unnecessary.

I dont understand why people don't just use the bookmark function, but then mine is temperamental and has disappeared before.

But I thnk if you are going to put something sensitive on the big we'd web, especially on a site as big as this, then you can't complain if you get responses you don't like. It's the nature of the beast.

cuntflapwankbadger · 12/07/2012 16:31

hmm, if you post on an internet forum you are hardly shying away from the old rubber neckers are you?

Empusa · 12/07/2012 16:33

I saw that, utterly inappropriate!

MardyBra · 12/07/2012 16:33

The bookmark function is useful for marking how far you've read into a thread. But it's not the same as using a full stop so that it comes up in "Threads I'm On".

The full stop can also be used as a bump to get it to the top of Active Conversations, which is a legitimate and useful function in some cases imo.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 12/07/2012 16:34

Empusa was that to me?
