We're in the UK. It's not like wet weather is unique. It's not like we've never had wash out summers before. Have just been into town and although I started off in a good mood, I have heard nothing but moans about the rain. And the weather. And more rain. And now I'm depressed because everyone's so miserable.
Yes, it's a PITA. Yes it's hard to keep kids entertained in the rain.
But people have lost their homes and their incomes because of the floods.
To those of us who only have to contend with frizzy hair and damp garments PLEASE STOP MOANING.

YABU. This is is not just a normal "bit crap" British summer.

A member of my family and several friends were affected by the extreme flash floods in the NE a fortnight ago.

The industry I work in has been, and continues to be, directly financially affected by the rain - this will have repercussions beyond this year.

My DH has a SAD component to his chronic depression so the interminable grey skies is having an adverse effect on his health.

My house permanently smells of wet Labrador, no matter how much I clean.

Our salad veggies have been decimated by slugs/snails so I'm having to buy them at the supermarket instead of being at least partially self-sufficient.

Our preferred leisure activity is going to county shows, country fairs, horse shows and events - cancellation after cancellation means not only fewer opportunities to get out and about this year, but the financial impact on the organisers means some of the smaller events may not run in the future, which would be a sad loss. Two of my self-employed friends make a big chunk of their income through seasonal trade stands at these sort of events - they have been hit hard and are facing cash flow problems.

So today I might be whining about frizzy hair and damp garments (actually that will be on Friday when I'm supposed to be going to the races) but it's probably just the socially-acceptable tip of a very large, very wet iceberg.

I live in Australia, and when in rentals loathed the rain because going out was a bit mis. Getting my own garden means I see it as all good, especially after years of drought.

Having said that, I'd find what's happening in the UK at the moment as very hard going.

Mrsjay · 11/07/2012 09:09

IT hasnt just been a normal wet summer though its just awful every day rain and people being flooded out yabu a little anyway .

I read in the New scientist that thanks to the lazy gulf stream we now have we'll get locked into weather patterns more often - meaning more summers like this or other extreme long heat waves with little rain. Neither appeals.

On the bright side my hay fever not been to bad and my DC excema which flares in the heat isn't an issue at the moment and I'm seeing and hearing less of troublesome neighbor as they are not out as much.

However despite our income not being affected or our home damaged it's costing us - having to use dryer to dry clothes not being able to do the cheap activities with the DC, the heating kicking on last month in the night. Money is tight and I'm worried about how much the summer will cost and the uk holiday we scrimped for will be ruined. I also find the lack of light depressing.

We go out in rain but not the torrential rain or heavy drizzles that soak you through leaving you cold wet and unconformable in very short period of time if we have a choice.

Reading back posts re "normal British summer", I have to add that I used to spend a part of the summer in the UK in the 1980s and I remember the weather being as expected for a country like Britain:
one day it would rain the other was sunny and just delightful. Sunny, lovely days actually outnumbered the rainy ones. I even used to swim in the Cornish sea.

And then I moved to the UK in the late 1990s, and I found summers (and springs) disappointing. As I said, the last summer we spend in the UK, 2007, was rather dreadful, at least until the end of July. I appreciate it is not comparable to this summer, but really, a month of continuous rain is just depressing, not to mention all the damages done to houses, crops etc.

uselesslife · 11/07/2012 10:00

this weather is not normal, it's very extreme.
I think that's why people are talking about it

badtasteflump · 11/07/2012 10:01

Agreed OP although I love a good moan

I don't remember UK summers ever not having shit weather, apart from the odd freakily-hot one that people talk about years and years on...

LettyAshton · 11/07/2012 10:04

I read there was less moisture in the air in the 70s so summers were better then.

Apparently 1912 was the worst summer on record, followed by 1960. I think 2012 is going for gold in the crappy weather olympics.

usualsuspect · 11/07/2012 10:08

It's shit weather,I will moan all I like

AKE2012 · 11/07/2012 10:09

I dont mind the rain but come on. We are 2 weeks in2 our summer holidays n its jus been rain after rain.
Waking up to another day of rain jus isnt fun.

Mrsjay · 11/07/2012 10:14

I woke up this morning and seriously i could have wept as i heard the cars splashing through puddles Sad It is just depressing I have a dd with a cast on I dont drive so we cant really go anywhere,

LettyAshton · 11/07/2012 10:16

It's worse than ever this morning. I really feel so sorry for those with businesses affected by the weather.

Otoh, the Waitrose manager was rubbing his hands and said that sales were exceeding all expectations. I guess that all people can do is sit in watching the telly stuffing their faces.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 11/07/2012 10:18

I have enjoyed the rain mostly. I particularly liked the heavy rain the other day because I could wearr my wellis and hat and keep toasty dry on the school run.

we have ben lucky, mostly and have had gentle rain and no floods.

I do feel terible for thoise who have been flooded.

badtasteflump · 11/07/2012 10:22

My garden is looking blooming gorgeously lovely this summer so I don't mind the weather for that reason

badtasteflump · 11/07/2012 10:23

But ditto as above, obviously....

Bunbaker · 11/07/2012 10:29

I suspect the OP hasn't had quite as much rain as some of us. It has been exceptionally wet where I live. My car actually floated through a huge lake puddle on Friday when I had to rescue DD from school.

Every outdoor event round here has been cancelled, including some large charity fund raisers, so the charities lose out as well.

I don't function well in gloomy weather and suspect that I succumb a little to SAD. I simply cannot raise my mood in this weather.

"I'm relieved the reservoirs are filling up"

Ours aren't just filling up, they are overflowing.

wheredidiputit · 11/07/2012 11:01

We haven't had as much rain as some IE no flooding.

But I am fed up of getting soaked to the skin 3 times a day when taking or collecting the children from school.

I am fed up of having washing drying inside, not being able to let dc play outside.

I don't want it to be hot just dry.

Empusa · 11/07/2012 11:33

Thought of another reason I'm sick of the rain, my only waterproof shoes have a damn hole in them, and I cannot afford new ones. Wish I could wear my sandals :(
