AIBU to be annoyed that the BBC among others keep saying no Briton has won at Wimbledon for 76 years?

According to Wikipedia, Virginia Wade won the women's singles championship at Wimbledon on 1 July 1977.

Or doesn't that count?

I presume they mean mens singles, so why not say so.

It started with mens singles and now it is turned to this if they had just said mens singles and not wimbledon It would have been great

AliceInSandwichLand · 08/07/2012 14:37

She did, I remember, it was the year of the Silver Jubilee. Good to have had a Briton win for the Diamond Jubilee (the men's doubles, I mean).

IAmSherlocked · 08/07/2012 14:41

Um - what about Jamie Murray? He won in 2007 - we don't even have to go back to the 70s for that title Confused

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 14:41

I saw Virgina Wade in the crowd yesterday at the womens finals i do feel sorry for her, I only realy watch bits and pieces but the hoooha about A M being the only Brit to have won since time began Grin is starting to tick me off too,

GateGipsy · 08/07/2012 14:41

yes exactly. It really peeves me off. Like you can't really win Wimbledon if you don't have a penis.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 14:43

I'd forgotten that was the Silver Jubilee. We were at work listening on extension phones to someone's radio on the other end. I remember squealing so loudly at the end I got wrestled to the floor for deafening everybody Blush

So did we have a good chance at winning in Golden Jubilee year ? Was Henman around then?

MixedClassBaby · 08/07/2012 14:45

YADNBU.

ChaoticismyLife · 08/07/2012 14:47

Jonathan Marray won yesterday along with his doubles partner Frederik Nielsen.

diddl · 08/07/2012 14:49

Well I think if it´s clear that it is the men´s singles that is being discussed...

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 14:49

Didn't John Lloyd win a mixed doubles back in the 70s or 80s?

ilovesooty · 08/07/2012 14:52

Jeremy Bates won the mixed doubles with a British partner.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/07/2012 14:58

Ann Jones won the ladies' singles in '69.

Jezza Bates and Jo Durie won the mixed doubles at Wimbers in '87 by the way. And in 91 they won the Aussie Open mixed.

So apart from Bates, Durie, Marrey, Jones and Other Murray and the aqueduct ......yes, Andy Murray could be the first Briton to win Wimbledon since 1938 Grin.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 15:02

Just looked it up. John Lloyd won mixed doubles with Wendy Turnbull two years running in 83 and 84. So another Brit winner.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/07/2012 15:05

So apart from Bates, Durie, Lloyd, Jones, Wade, Marrey and Other Murray.... Andy is the first Briton to get to a Wimbledon final for ages, yes?

ChaoticismyLife · 08/07/2012 15:14

Marray's win was yesterday.

NoComet · 08/07/2012 15:28

Not one mention of Jamie Murray, there never is. I feel really sorry for him.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 15:58

When you put it like that Ariel, I can't see what all the fuss is about...

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/07/2012 16:00

Nah, me neither :)
