To think it terrible that peoples grammar and spelling is critised on threads and posts.

I have seen this so many times on threads when posters are roasted for making minor grammar and spelling mistakes. On some threads it goes on and on and on.
I for one have crap grammar and spelling so maybe i'm being sensitive. I have also noticed posters are usually toasted on this when their comments are not agreed on. Am BU?

Reading ami's post, I'm thinking there's a difference between someone telling you something you don't know - which is usually at least interesting - and someone correcting SPAG errors when they can't tell whether you know the correct version or not.

If I were assuming that shops don't open on Sundays and someone posted to tell me they do, I'd be grateful, because clearly it would mean I didn't know something that'd be useful to know.

How can you tell whether someone who types 'you're' for 'your' doesn't know the difference, doesn't care about accuracy on MN, is making some kind of homophone error, or whatever? Surely you risk coming across as rude?

usualsuspect · 08/07/2012 14:25

My kids went to the local comprehensive.

Another reason to be ignored on MN Grin

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 14:26

correcting peoples grammar and spelling and now IT skills isn't supportive or caring

It is condiscending and patronising

CakeMeIAmYours · 08/07/2012 14:30

people who judge on such silly grounds

Yep, like university admissions tutors, employers and such?

Of course these people hold no power over your life at all.

If you wish to wallow in your ignorance, then please go ahead. You will be freeing up the top jobs etc for those of us who actually respect the importance of such things.

I take your point re spell check though, I worded it rather flippantly but I stand by my point that people should make every effort to use whatever tools they have available if they wish to enter the mainstream.

SecretSquirrels · 08/07/2012 14:30

Er - everyone- isn't this thread a joke? I think the OP has been having some fun.

usualsuspect · 08/07/2012 14:31

This a chat forum,not a job application.

HTH

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 14:33

enter the mainstream
secretsquirrel people have been attempting to keep this thread light hearted and up beat but some people well what can i say,

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 14:35

OH i nearly typed vagina wade on another post a few minutes ago I didn't ignore my squiggles though Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/07/2012 14:35

cake, my mates do uni admissions. They're not ignorant twits so please don't pretend you have the foggiest about that.

CakeMeIAmYours · 08/07/2012 14:49

Sorry LRD, are you trying to suggest that you would get a place at a Russel Group university if you used something like 'should of' in the application?

Hmmm, I think not.

Ignorance of the basic rules of language will limit your opportunities in life. Whether this is a good thing or not is another debate, but for now at least, its a fact.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 14:50

Russell

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 14:52

it's

Shullbit · 08/07/2012 14:52

I hope that all those who do pick up on grammar and spelling mistakes and think they are so superior never make mistakes themselves. Would be a bit hypocritical, don't you think?

Many on here are exactly that. Mistakes. They are not in work, probably tired/only got a few minutes to post etcetera, so not concentrating as much as they would in work. Didn't realise this was such a crime.

Then there are many who struggle, and do not find it as easy as you (general you) do. But hey, nevermind. Let's just lock the lazy buggers up and throw away the key, eh?

Pathetic. Judge all you want, but to resort to picking away at a post, will make me judge also. I would prefer a genuine person who struggles with spelling and grammar than one who has nothing productive to add, and only does add belittling comments to massage their ego.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/07/2012 15:04

cake, I refer you to usual's point, which may be extended to university applications.

Mrbojangles1 · 08/07/2012 15:12

Usually its when posters dont agree with a point of view and are unable to challage that view so the resort to...

Na na nerna na you cant spell i can so there .........

Instead of just challaging the point its like when having a arument some one just starts swearing because they are unable to challage you very petty

The bigggest joke for me is those who try are correct others you can almost always find one or two mistakes along the way in their posts

He who is with out sin may cast the first stone and all that .........

And those you insist its about understanding a post well if yu didnt understand the post you would not be able ot correct the spelling and the grammer

Most people dont mispell on purpous i pads have done nothing for the bad speller
Grin

Mrbojangles1 · 08/07/2012 15:14

Also you get people pretending they do not understand somthing that a poster has written just to make the poster feel small

So they will say whats ccxxxxxx?
Dont you mean ggggggffdtd?
Well if you dont know what the posters on about how can you type the corecction Confused

Mrsjay · 08/07/2012 15:15

Oh yes mrsbojangles the old"How can i help or contribute if i cant read the post properly ! " rubbish well they managed to read it well enough perhaps if people let down their ego a little bit about their amazing advice giving and wisdom then they would get on a bit better,

Mrbojangles1 · 08/07/2012 15:18

My spelling is awful btw Grin

shinyblackgrape · 08/07/2012 15:20

I only comment or feel like commenting when the poster ls in question hold themselves out as self-appointed experts in spelling and/or grammar. I then think its fair game as you would challenge any "expert" who manifestly wasn't.

shinyblackgrape · 08/07/2012 15:20

That should say poster(s)!

shinyblackgrape · 08/07/2012 15:22

And it's! Grin

SoleSource · 08/07/2012 15:36

I no OP. Its summit I'd never doo.

iklboo · 08/07/2012 15:50

Ah yes. The post from some poor MNer describing some awful scenario and some helpful gonk person responds 'Come back when you've learned to use paragraphs'.

LeeCoakley · 08/07/2012 15:55

Exactly shiny. That's why I pointed out cake's mistakes. I've had to judge her now and can't take anything she says seriously from now on Grin

hairylemon · 08/07/2012 15:59

YANBU Especially if you can tell what the poster meant eg. their instead of there. Its totally rude and just smacks of "I cant think of anything clever to say so will just pull you up on your spelling instead"

very twattish thing to do and just makes the smart arse look stupid and petty and about 5 years old.
