I have seen this so many times on threads when posters are roasted for making minor grammar and spelling mistakes. On some threads it goes on and on and on.
I for one have crap grammar and spelling so maybe i'm being sensitive. I have also noticed posters are usually toasted on this when their comments are not agreed on. Am BU?

Yes it does change over time, ALL the time.

Does anyone here use the same grammar and spelling as Shakespeare??

gnushoes · 07/07/2012 22:35

But itsn't it important to try and get things right? Getting the grammar and spelling correct helps clarity and means we all understand each other a little better. You could argue that if you don't correct someone (in a nice way), how will they know something is wrong? I'm not arguing that you should do that all the time, and it's quite right that we shouldn't judge: that is unfair to people with dyslexia and so on.
But that doesn't mean we shouldn't care about not getting it right, especially when social networking and texting means we're all communicating using a written form -- something that hasn't been common since the days when people could post a letter in the morning and it might arrive at the end of the day.

Yea verily.

Shakespeare doesn't always use the same spelling and grammar as Shakespeare.

shattereddreams · 07/07/2012 22:36

OP
Your posts are annoying as hell because you type i am blah swiftly followed by I did blah.
So you are not poor at grammar, just lazy. Thus you deserve to be pulled up.
I despise the poor grammar on here.

Spelling, especially long or medical words are not pulled up on MN IMHO. Such as diarrhoea. Perfectly acceptable to spell it however you like. Doesn't distract from the point as long as it's close enough.

Now, too many people spell their emotive or descriptive words (i.e definitely) wrong. It doesn't even sound like def i nate lee. So don't spell it that way. If you are trying to put across thoughts and feelings then ruddy well check your spelling. In these circumstances, you are pulled up because you are unable to make a clear point. The spelling error distracts the reader.

We had a saying at school;
Grammar teaches you your shit. High school teaches you you're shit.

And guess what? Another pedant who has a statement of dyslexia.

usualsuspect · 07/07/2012 22:37

It doesn't matter, none of this really matters does it.

gordyslovesheep · 07/07/2012 22:38

my spelling and grammar are awful - to my shame, I am just not very good at either - or typing - but I don;t mind being pulled up on it - not sure why people take offence if they ARE in the wrong

also text speak should ALWAYS be pulled up on - it makes my eyes BLEED with the pain of reading it - sorry, I am old

usualsuspect · 07/07/2012 22:39

If any one pulled me up on my spelling or grammar , I would tell them to fuck off

Serendipity30 · 07/07/2012 22:40

shattereddreams I am trying to be careful, you dont see how longs it takes to write my posts, but thanks i'll take it as a compliment

gordyslovesheep · 07/07/2012 22:40

but it's petty - so I just thank them and move on - I think often it is done to point score when there is nothing else to use - so why give the expected response

Serendipity30 · 07/07/2012 22:41

''shattereddreams Doesn't distract from the point as long as it's close enough.'' this is one of the things that annoy me, when someone is making a point and they make a minor mistake, leading to them being slated.

It wasn't a compliment. It was a polite hint to improve and try the preview button perhaps.

shattereddreams · 07/07/2012 22:46

Lemarche
It can detract me and distract me.
Surely if I am detracted, the mistake was the cause momentarily.
But once distracted, I lose the will to return regardless

usualsuspect · 07/07/2012 22:47

FFS does it matter if someone forgets to press the bloody shift key .

gordyslovesheep · 07/07/2012 22:49

no

shattereddreams · 07/07/2012 22:49

YES

shattereddreams · 07/07/2012 22:50

I would be more forgiving it they never pressed the shift key. But the erratic manner in which the OP is using it is grrrrr

usualsuspect · 07/07/2012 22:51

usualsuspect · 07/07/2012 22:52
