To think the police are twats

whosphuckoffy · 07/07/2012 10:10

It's the second time now, they've done major damage to my car by arresting someone up against it. The first time i was sat in the vehicle and heavily pregnant. Not that they knew this of course. I know they have to arrest people and these things happen. The problem i have is the first time, if i hadn't of been sat in my car at the time, i wouldn't of known how the damage had occured. Also the damage caused to my car last night, our next door neighbour text us, otherwise we'd of thought it was vandals.

AIBU, to think that if police damage your property they should just leave a note to say contact the police station?

I've now got to faff around to sort this out today and i've got to cancel my plans because the car is undrivable, the wing mirror is fucked, i'm not happy.

james "Just as the population as a whole has good, bad, professional, incompetent, thoughtful, selfish people so does the police. And just as those with good qualities always outnumber the bad in the general population the same can be said for the police. "

is this not negating the effects of institutional values? such as institutionalised racism that we all here so much about?

twofingerstoGideon · 09/07/2012 19:36

Unfortunately, James, most people don't encounter the police very frequently, so if their only dealings with them have been negative then, of course, they're likely to form a negative impression. My own experience was very negative and I have to say has coloured my view significantly. In other words, my 'bad experience' was not 'the exception' for me.

I imagine that a significant number of the 900,000 innocent people whose DNA remains stored on the police database feel similarly aggrieved and no longer have warm, cuddly feelings towards the police.

Can I say I don't share the 'all police are scum' attitudes that some posters have displayed, but I no longer unequivocally believe that they are the 'good guys' either.

twofingerstoGideon · 09/07/2012 19:41

Just as the population as a whole has good, bad, professional, incompetent, thoughtful, selfish people so does the police.

One difference is, though, that the police have a significantly different role to 'the population as a whole'. They are meant to be upholding the law and should be trustworthy and fair in their dealings with the public.

twofingerstoGideon · 09/07/2012 19:43

nailak and institutional sexism

rhondajean · 09/07/2012 19:46

I have met some lovely police officers.

However like any other position of percieved power it also attracts a certain type of person who misuses that power.

Unfortunately that type of personality on the police force causes a great deal of damage. I'd say it's a minority who are like that but they do a real disservice to their colleagues.

limitedperiodonly · 09/07/2012 19:52

I'm finding this all very interesting. I'm not anti-police but I have come across behaviour directly through my work or in the wider news which is very depressing to say the least.

I'm interested in how this show turns out

ATM I'm clinging to the belief that the worst thing in any job, not just policing, is indifference, laziness, careerism and arse-covering.

That seems like enough to be going along with Hmm

JamesMurphy · 09/07/2012 20:44

Institutional racism is just that, by definition it does not mean that individual officers are necessarily any more racist than you.

Of course an individual negative experience with the police is bound to leave a sour taste, but it would be an unthinking person who made make the assumption that the every other police officer they saw or interacted with was a twat.

I think you need to take the DNA database issue up with the government not 'front line' officers. Didn't the Labour government set the current system up?Patrolling officers have no more influence on that matter than you.

Most police officers are trustworthy and fair. A tiny minority have 'power' issues. What more can be said?

ReindeerBollocks · 09/07/2012 20:51

I know a few police officers, most are lovely and think that they are doing an important role and uphold that role very well. plus they look great in that uniform, but I'm not married to an officer FWIW

A few, well, it's the same in every field, isn't it? A couple of sour ones ruin it for everyone. Police sometimes have to be heavy handed and always assume the worst. Given what they deal with on a daily basis I'd say it probably calls for it.

But honestly most are trying to do their job to the best of their ability, whilst being understaffed (as our current police force is) and complete twice as much paperwork as they used to,for fear of getting a complaint against them over every minor incident.

Complain OP, if there is damage to your car. However the numerous dealings thing is a bit odd.

Sleepydog · 09/07/2012 21:17

Same old crap being spouted out about the police then -

Well you 'Twat' name callers - have a think about this officers family tonight you utter utter twunts !

policeman shot dead

OP _ if you live in an rae where twice your car has been damaged when people have been arrested - I suggest you move or save your rath for the criminals.

Utter utter twosh !

ohdobuckup · 09/07/2012 21:18

Because, like nursing, social services and teaching, it is THEM and US. A mindset gets into place, with institutionalised stupidity, defensiveness and ''canteen cultures'' taking hold.

I know nurses who are physically and sexually abusive, I know teachers who lie and bully staff and children. I know social workers who are stupid, liars , sexual predators and personality disordered fantasists. I know psychotherapists who deserve a hyphen before and after ''the'' in that title. I know police officers who are wife beaters, thieves and rapists and who enjoy the power they have to abuse and intimidate others.

however, they are all outnumbered by the many many more in all those professions who are just fucking great. What matters is dealing quickly and openly with all the bad cases, and that is where the problem lies, as all professions can be very defensive and secretive with delaying tactics to put off investigations...though they are also good at sacrificing one of their own very publicly over a minor misdemeanour. Organisational psychology is often to blame, informal or formally structured.

SharonGless · 09/07/2012 21:33

Golly ohdobuckup, you know some pretty awful people don't you.

The police are generally a target for hatred which is why some of the officers on this thread sound fed up with it. The public don't contact the police with good news and unless the outcome is a positive one, many are Disappointed when their problem cannot be solved.

How many posters on MN will have seen this thread title and not even bothered to post their positive experience. The people on this thread who have bothered to post have had bad experiences (which I am not minimizing by the way)

That does not mean that I am excusing the behaviour of a tiny minority. The canteen culture has been eradicated, certainly where I work in a very busy inner city area.

My final thought is for the family of the police officer killed in Essex tonight. God bless

ohdobuckup · 09/07/2012 21:38

Ha ha Sharon , yeah, been mixing with the cream of society for a long time, and the professionals who go in to help as best they can. Sometimes a very thin dividing line between the two, but as I said, the vast majority doing the best they can in difficult circumstances.

Can someone point me to the auxiliary nurse thread mentioned earlier please, ta

rhondajean · 09/07/2012 21:41

Erm that officer was off duty terrible thing that happened but nothing in the article to suggest him being shot was due to being a police officer at this point??

limitedperiodonly · 09/07/2012 21:51

ohdobuckup Oh, do shut up. We all know many police officers have been vile. But did you really mean to say: 'haha'?

Secret7 · 09/07/2012 21:52

OP, I can understand your anger at the damage done to your vehicle. Without knowing why someone was arrested against your car we can't comment on why a note wasn't left. Dial 101 and report was has happened.

The title of your thread is fucking offensive to the police officers on this forum.

ohdobuckup · 09/07/2012 22:05

LIMITED yes I did, as an acknowledgement of Sharon's comment about knowing such people..was sort of ironic.

whosphuckoffy · 09/07/2012 22:24

I have apologised and will apologise again for the title of this thread, all police are not twats, but, I posted in anger. Terrible excuse, but I was pretty fucked off for this happening twice and fwiw I live in a fairly nice area with low crime, I'm just very unlucky I guess.

OP posts:
CanISawItOff · 09/07/2012 22:27

Again for the ignorance of what the Police actually do and more concern over incidental damage to your property. If you know it was the Police contact your local station and ask to be reimbursed for the damage.

Latara · 09/07/2012 22:30

Thinking about it - recently there have been quite a few local rapists, murderers, robbers, muggers, paedophiles & drug dealers that have been put in prison due to the hard work of the police in my area.

Everyone is very glad that those deeply unpleasant people have been named & are off the streets for a while.. (just wish the sentences could be longer but that's nothing to do with the police).

Sleepydog · 09/07/2012 22:32

I live in a nice area with no crime - hardly see a police officer let alone get two separate arrested people slammed against my car !

Too late for apologies I fell OP -you have pissed alot of people off

Nice area low crime rate - ha ha nearly fell for it .

Socknickingpixie · 09/07/2012 22:35

whosphuckoffy · 09/07/2012 22:40
