Everywhere, all around you. They are looking, They're in your office chattering about immigration, they're in your local shop judging a black guy for the amount of money they have in there wallet, assuming criminality. They are possibly even your friends. AIBU in thinking even apologists are racist scum?

No, you're ignorant because you seem quite proud of not knowing what armistice day is.

MarigoldsInTheWindow · 07/07/2012 16:50

im not proud of it, i just dont know what it is!
but I am sorry that soemthing I have never been told about in my entire life by any one single person I have ever met bothers you so much.

Are your family involved in the military? because soome people just have no connection to it at all. Thats not ignorance.

Sorry :(

Dprince · 07/07/2012 16:55

How has anyone even glanced at the we and not know what armstice day is.

Dprince · 07/07/2012 16:56

At the ww.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 07/07/2012 16:56

Do you observe the minutes silence every year in November.
Do you notice the people selling and wearing poppies.
Do you not wonder why?

bitofcheese · 07/07/2012 16:57

actually mari i don't expect you to care at all, it is you making it sound that you thought noone she care, that is what i found really annoying. i don't expect anyone to be interested unless they ie have an interest in history and/or have a personal connection to it. actually, i do think that is still an awful lot of tv progs' etc still about on the subject and as a jew, find it a bit uncomfortable as i am aware that it is shoving it down peoples throats and thus i read comments such as yours although i get where you are coming from only in part

bitofcheese · 07/07/2012 16:57

*should

Latara · 07/07/2012 17:06

Marigold - don't you ever wonder WHY?

About anything? Ever?

Even the OP, who is slightly annoying, even he bothered to ask WHY...

You're 26. Well, my colleague's daughter is 20 & about to go out to Afghanistan with the army as a Medic... the Medics are the ones that the enemy try to take out first in a patrol - because they know that Medics are an essential member of any army patrol.

Do you even know where Afghanistan is? Part of Pakistan's Northern Frontier is shared with Afghanistan. Do you know any people with family from Pakistan? Do you know why thousands of Indians & Pakistanis emigrated to the UK? Have you heard of Partition? Burma? Pashtun culture?
How about Israel - why do you think that Israel only came into existence after that boring little genocide known as the Holocaust?

The issues that we face NOW in the UK that will affect YOU are a direct result of all those boring World Wars and the boring British Empire we used to have... they are a direct result of all those boring genocides & boring tribal wars in places you would never have heard of.. of those stupid Nazis & Communists & the Cold War & 9/11 (yes i know, even that's boring history now to you....)!!!

Dprince · 07/07/2012 17:19

I don't get how anyone can think its boring and not realise the impact it had.
My stepbrother died in afganistan 3 years ago. I hope to god people are not, in 70 years talking like Mari has.
How will would his mother, wife, dd feel knowing that speaking about the war he gave his life for was boring.
How can you not know the effect the ww had on YOUR life. How the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people have effected the life you have today. And all this from some who claims to be interested and studied history. I just don't get it.

tethersend · 07/07/2012 17:26

I'd say that not knowing what armistice day is is a perfect example of ignorance on the matter.

But then, being 34 I would say that. Or something.

Moominsarescary · 07/07/2012 17:30

My gp are in their 70s, both lost a parent during ww2. My grandad remembers traveling to the train station to wait for his dad to come home, he never arrived as he was killed a few days before he was due home.

My nanas father was never the same again after his return.

I worked in a nursing home when I was your age, women with dementia who had been raped in concentration camps and relived it every day.

Men who were pow, who were starved and beaten

These people are still alive, maybe you should go and visit them

amillionyears · 07/07/2012 17:40

Marigold has not posted for about an hour now.Not sure if she is coming back.Ive had a look at a few of her previous posts.Sometimes, she seems to like to be slightly controversial for not much of a reason at all, that I can see.
However,on this occasion she is genuinely upsetting some posters.
From what I can see,I thnk she has a couple of things that she is sad about in her own life and maybe she needs to deal with them.
So,Marigold,if you would like some help,MNetters can try and help. You may want to namechange for it,up to you.
