To think there bloody were substitutions available / Tesco suck?

NarkedRaspberry · 05/07/2012 19:53

Over 17, yes, 17 separate products were missing from my internet shop because 'no appropriate substitutions (was) available.' Which left me about 25 items short on my shopping.

These elusive items included such rare delicacies as MILK, CHEDDAR and GRAPES.

Yabu to think that Tesco didn't suck to start with! Grin

jubilee10 · 05/07/2012 19:56

I hate Tesco with a passion. Asda's substitutions were good today!

jubilee10 · 05/07/2012 19:56

Their lamb was tough though!

BalloonSlayer · 05/07/2012 19:58

I once had a delivery where there were no potatoes. They also said 'no appropriate substitutions was available."

My ARSE.

I phoned the shop and ranted away freely, enquiring how come the whole massive superstore did not have ONE single potato in it? I spoke at length on the subject of having a child with food allergies (true) who can't eat just any old thing (true) and I had paid £5 delivery charge (true) and was now going to have to go out and buy some potatoes because we had nothing else he could eat (not true).

About 5pm someone left a bag of potatoes on our doorstep. They didn't ring the bell. Presumably their ears were ringing too much.

PoppyWearer · 05/07/2012 19:58

Don't get me started on the time they claimed to have no nappies...and I was down to the last two. That was the last straw for me.

Try Ocado. You might be able get free delivery slots, and they usually have a £15 or £20 off offer for new customers. Kind-of makes up for the higher prices. Plus they tend to deliver what you order!

Catsmamma · 05/07/2012 19:59

I'd drive in and take photographs of any alleged out of stock item, I really would!

And I'd buy them

And then I would summons the manager, brandish my online shopping list in his face and refuse to leave until he had fetched the idiot person who picked my shopping and made them identify why they could not find the aforementioned items

This would make me wild! AND stabby.

DilysPrice · 05/07/2012 20:04

Waitrose tried to give me four bags of stuff I didn't order (I could have kept it but the item on the top of the first bag was a pack of Tena Lady Grin).
Driver told me that their computers were up the spout so I carefully checked through and found all my stuff and handed the rest back. I said "Do make sure the other people on your round check their order won't you" and he said that if he did that then he'd be late and would get in trouble Shock. I pointed out that there was no point in being on time with a delivery if you'd left all their groceries with the previous customer, and he nodded which may have meant he'd got my point, but may have meant he was humouring the mad old bat.

Somersaults · 05/07/2012 20:05

I'm sorry that you didn't get the shopping you wanted but this thread has made me smile, in typical MN fashion with its responses.

NarkedRaspberry · 05/07/2012 20:06

Grin BalloonSlayer. You're my new hero.

Catsmamma that's exactly what I should do. But I'm not able to get out of the house tonight, and if I go tomorrow they'll claim they had loads of deliveries overnight.

I will try Ocado PoppyWearer. I think I have a voucher code somewhere.

Try Sainsburys. They do good substitutions.

Huffles · 05/07/2012 20:27

I hate doing online shopping. It always comes later than it says it will, some of my stuff is missing and I always forget to order something I deperately need (yes I know the third point is my own fault but it still makes me miffed).

I've given up on doing it and now prefer to go to the actual shop to do it. I find it easier.

redyam · 05/07/2012 20:48

Try ocado. Always come on time, no substitutions. Of course might have been just lucky, 5 times in a row...

Dolallytats · 05/07/2012 20:51

They have done that to me today. I don't believe for a second that there were no size 6 nappies in the warehouse at all....I bet there were only pampers and they were too tight to pricematch!!!

And they substituted my DS's yogurts with cheese the other weekHmm

BertieBotts · 05/07/2012 20:53

I haven't had any substitutions or items missing from Tesco recently.

WenTheEternallySurprised · 05/07/2012 20:54

I had one of the stores telling me they had no cat biscuits. None. Not their own brand, not Whiskas, not Go Cat, not Iams. Yeah right! So, I called the store up directly, spoke to the internet shopping manager and asked if he could confirm that they had not a single packet of cat kibble on their shelves. I explained that I used internet shopping to avoid having to bus into town and carry heavy groceries home.

A couple of hours and a very apologetic manager later there was a knock at the door and the delivery man handed me the correct amount of kilos of an alternative cat biscuit. I recommend that you call the store which your groceries come from rather than the main customer services number and do the same, Narked.

Pastabee · 05/07/2012 20:58

I had substitutions with Ocado today but they substitute something better and charge you the price of the missing item. DD has the Prince Charles milk and i have Lindt instead of plain old Waitrose now Grin

NarkedRaspberry · 05/07/2012 21:41

Stupid question alert: How do I know which store it came from?

I've been using them for a few months now, and there had been the odd substitution here and there but never more than 3 items a shop and usually eg 250g of blueberries instead of 120g or organic celery instead of standard stuff.

I've arranged an Ocado shop for the weekend. What I really want is my biscuits and for the store manager to follow whoever failed to pick my shopping around for the next couple of days with a pointy stick and huge carboard pictures of groceries - 'Milk! See the milk! Find the milk!'

This thread has really cheered me up!

Asda's pretty good, although they did send me one toothbrush rather than a 3 PAC at the same price and completely the wrong hair bands, but they refunded the items and let me keep them when I rang to complain. They forgot a couple of items once and gave me free delivery next time as well as a refund.

wimblehorse · 05/07/2012 22:02

I've had tesco deliveries where they haven't been able to substitute milk too. No milk, of any size, organic, filtered, branded...REALLY? Use Asda now as couldn't book Tesco delivery slots less than 4 days ahead too...

cakeismysaviour · 05/07/2012 22:07

They once told me that they had no available substitutes for two loaves of bread that I had ordered (on offer). I reckon they just didn't want to give me the more expensive bread. Perhaps they had been told off for being too generous with substitutes? Confused

I rang them up and ranted at them. I really needed the bread and didn't have the time to go out shopping for it, so I was furious.

I seem to remember telling them that I couldn't believe that they had no bread - no loaves, no breadbuns, no baguettes, not even a french stick. I asked them to confirm that this was the case and told them that I would come and check to see if they were telling the truth (an empty threat, but she didn't know that).

In the end she agreed to get two loaves to me and they were delivered within half an hour. Grin
