To think there bloody were substitutions available / Tesco suck?

NarkedRaspberry · 05/07/2012 19:53

Over 17, yes, 17 separate products were missing from my internet shop because 'no appropriate substitutions (was) available.' Which left me about 25 items short on my shopping.

These elusive items included such rare delicacies as MILK, CHEDDAR and GRAPES.

Bread last week - no bread at all? Really? I didn't think to phone the manager, I will be doing next time.

hazchem · 06/07/2012 07:09

I stopped using Tesco online after they repeatedly gave me salt and vinegar mini rice cakes instead of apple. It wasn't that they even mentioned they were substitutes either. No they just appeared in the normal shopping.

Tee2072 · 06/07/2012 07:56

When I have a problem now, I Tweet to @UKTesco. Nearly instant response 24/7.

ENormaSnob · 06/07/2012 08:24

I used asda online for the first time last week.

Was impressed tbh.

SerialKipper · 06/07/2012 08:34

Well it may also be the fact that Tesco don't actually pay a lot of their "staff".

They use a succession of workfarers working for their ordinary benefits under coercion from the Jobcentre, which comes out well under the minimum wage (and is paid for by the taxpayer - Tesco don't shell out a penny).

Wouldn't be exactly surprising if the workfarers didn't fall over themselves to help the customer or build the Tesco brand.

Acumenoop · 06/07/2012 08:39

We switched from Tesco to Ocado because it worked out cheaper--largely because of substitutions!

No loo roll, Tesco? Really? No milk! No bread! No beans!

It's the worst delivery service.

CouthyMow · 06/07/2012 08:45

I once had Tesco substitute a 'hot pink' nail file for the Hot cross buns I had ordered.

And the time they substituted the Oatly milk substitute with almond milk for a DC with dairy, soy and nut allergies...

I go shopping myself now, despite my health issues that mean Internet shopping would be more useful!

NarkedRaspberry · 06/07/2012 11:03

I thought Tesco were no longer involved with that scheme Serial?

I think I'm going to have to get back into the habit of actually going shopping Couthy. Which means back to Morrison's for me. Unless Ocado are brilliant.

I could be wrong (please someone tell me I am), but I thought Tesco had simply tweaked participation in one of the workfare schemes?

The one that hit the news was workfare for young people, and I think Tesco have now promised to offer people jobs after the freebie bit "if the placement is completed satisfactorily".

I can find out more though, because a Jobcentre ESA advisor has told me he is sending disabled people on workfare. Not the people who have been redefined as Fit to Work even though they're too ill to claim JSA - but the ones who have actually passed as disabled under the new incredibly strict criteria. So I can ask where he's sending them.

NB, advisor pointedly said, "This scheme is voluntary - for now." He also clearly distinguished between workfare and volunteering for a charity, which he listed as two completely separate options for his lucky subjects.

mrsbugsywugsy · 06/07/2012 16:50

they also have a habit when they have something on '3 for 2' of only bringing two of the item, claiming no substitute is available for the third one, and still charging the same. cheeky bastards.

PoppyWearer · 06/07/2012 16:54

mrsbugsy I also found that they would mysteriously have run out of a lot of stuff on special offer.

Like when they had that buy-a-load-of-Diet-Coke-and-get-money-off-your-petrol deal. No Diet Coke. Really? Hmm

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/07/2012 16:59

I think it must depend on your local store - I shop online with Tesco regularly, and haven't had any real problems at all. The deliverymen are helpful and polite, and it is worth the delivery charge.

I would use Ocado, as an occasional treat, but they don't deliver where I live the heartless barstewards.

pengymum · 06/07/2012 17:13

Had Tesco delivery last night and substitutions:
ordered 2kg pack of ice @ £1 got single 1kg pack of ice @ £1!
ordered mr T's raspberry conserve got mr T's strawberry
ordered lime pickle got mixed pickle (already ordered)

I sent them back.

I think they are probably trying to keep the costs down for substitutes - the Bonne Maman raspberry conserve is a lot dearer Sad but don't know why they just didn't stick 2 bags of ice in! I would call and complain but will cost me more than the ice probably!

NarkedRaspberry · 06/07/2012 18:14

I would really like to know that please SerialKipper. About involvement in any of those sort of schemes. And if Morrison's and Ocado are using that type of labour because that's what I'll be switching to.

Ocado
Ocado
Ocado
I love them
Tesco are shit

SerialKipper · 06/07/2012 18:31

Will find out what I can, NarkedRaspberry.

In the meantime, Boycott Welfare seem to have a well-referenced, running list showing who's doing what - but obviously I can't vouch for their accuracy.

I think Tesco are crap because of the way they treat their suppliers

McPie · 07/07/2012 14:59

They are cutting hours left right and centre but staff are still expected to do the same amount of work but with less staff. I have a friend who used to pick and she said it was almost impossible to do at times and they get pulled up if they take too long, just like the checkout staff do if they dont hit their one item every three seconds or whatever it is! If the shelves are not filled then the pickers dont really have time to go hunt for something else which is crap as you are paying for a service that they are not providing. Don't blame the staff blame the big guns cutting corners sitting in their comfy chairs having never picked a shop or filled a shelf in one of the stores!

hermionestranger · 07/07/2012 15:14

Honestly never had a problem with Tesco online, Asda used to be shit but are better now and they do great substitutions! I'm trying Ocado this month and have a free six month delivery pass which I'm hoping will keep me sane during my first few months in a new role. In so much as I can get a weekly delivery of staples in and do the "big shop" with a cheaper place.

DH made me do the big shop in Lidl last month to "try it out". Never, ever, ever again. I made it very clear in the store what I thought of his shit idea.

shebird · 07/07/2012 16:03

Found Tesco delivery ok until the last few months. Not sure what changed but recently lots of everyday items that i know are in store we're not substituted. I wondered if it's a ploy to save money? For example if you ordered Tesco own brand cereal and this was not available, previously this was substituted with maybe a branded product but they only charged the same price as the original product you ordered. Maybe because of price difference in some substitutions the staff are encouraged not to? Just me being cynical but it's usually about money and profits with these guys.

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 07/07/2012 17:50

I'm having a problem where there are items that are on my confirmation email, but which do not arrive, and which are not listed as missing items or subs - it's happened more than a few times, 2-3 items per order just missing.

I thought it was DH's unpacking at first, but I've sat down with my confirmation email and the delivery note, and there's stuff missing - can the picker delete items somehow, in a way that doesn't flag them up as missing?

laurz75 · 07/07/2012 17:55

I used to use Tesco until they substituted some posh sundried tomato bread for Value White Med Sliced - er......not really thanks!! Hmm
Sainsburys better by a mile.

WeShouldOpenABar · 07/07/2012 18:12

I was very ill this week sat waiting for my order , i was dying for a bath and had to wait until delivery came , i was dying for a cuppa and had no milk. Order never arrived :( I really was too sick to go out and had nothing in so was very upset and had a mini breakdown :)
I got a lovely man on the helpline whos computer kept going down , he said the store hadnt put any of the payments through properly for the day.
He was nice but I wasnt even offered a voucher and i'm sure that could easily happen again, i mean what do they do if your credit card doesnt go through for whatever reason , they just carry on with their day and you are left sitting in waiting for food that never arrives. I wont be using them again and as my local Tesco is very badly designed that means im no longer a Tesco customer at all.
