To think that this trend for messy hair just looks... Um... Messy?

I've just been to the supermarket and the local high school is obviously having it's lunch hour as it was overrun with teens buying multipacks of doughnuts to see them through the afternoon, what struck me aside from their incredibly poor diet Grin was that all of the girls looked like they hadn't brushed their hair for months. Seriously what is with that knotty tangled scruffy look that screams sophistication? It looks to me like they need a bloody good wash and a bucket load of conditioner. AIBU?

There's a fashion for scruffy hair? So I could pretend I'm a teenager instead of just scruffy?

AxlRosesLeatherTrousers · 05/07/2012 13:10

Nope YANBU, I think they look like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards. But it's no different to the way I used to back comb and lacquer my hair to within an inch of it's life when I was in school, that was probably frowned upon back in the early 90s too. That and the corkscrews perms I used to get!

BenedictsCumberbitch · 05/07/2012 13:26

But at least that is a style, as opposed to the 'street dweller' look they were all sporting. It's not just school kids either, the younger trendier ones at work do it it too. What gives?

Leave them be, they are only young girls.

maddening · 05/07/2012 13:29

I don't know but my hair when messy just looks messy

Iggly · 05/07/2012 13:31

It's the just got out of bed look I think?

I get a bit sad when I see teenagers dressing like they did in the 80s. I mean it wasn't that bloody long ago (child of the 80s here).

WipsGlitter · 05/07/2012 13:31

My vair posh, but young-ish, neighbour seems to do her hair like this. I was chatting to her yesterday and it looked like she had a massive tat in her hair. Actually, she has a teeny baby, maybe it was just a tat and she's too knackered to brush it!

Debeezandbirds · 05/07/2012 13:38

I love this look (I'm 27 so no teenager). I haven't brushed my hair in four days Grin My hair is rather long though and I do style it into either a tatty bun or have a plait coming down one side. I wash and condition it too. So glad I don't have to straighten anymore, takes me hours as my hair is so thick.

absolutmum · 05/07/2012 14:22

I'm always happy when messy hair is in fashion. My hair grows out of my head in a very messy fashion, if I brush it, it turns into a frizz ball.
Hurrah for messy hair! (and I'm 50 Blush)

Tee2072 · 05/07/2012 14:22

I have noticed that on the secondary school children on the bus. I want to hand them all brushes.

My hairs naturally messy, does that mean by some weird quirk of fate I am now fashionableGrin

I do wash and brush it most days but I never look groomed. I used to have a sleek bob but as middle age has approached I have embraced my inner slattern hippy, grown it long and let it do it's own thing!

This is exactly how i wear my hair!! If its not one it's the other except i do brush it everyday and i'm 37!!!!

I hate spending loads of time on my hair cause in a couple of hours it looks shit anyway. Quick and easy is the way to go!!!!

Anniegetyourgun · 05/07/2012 14:40

Ah, fashion has caught up with me at last, has it?

weasar · 05/07/2012 15:44

YANBU it looks awful!

Psammead · 05/07/2012 15:46

Can someone link to a picture?

BenedictsCumberbitch · 05/07/2012 16:21

I've had a look but all the pics on the net seem to be too 'done' whereas all the real life ones I've seen are literally tatty birds nests,

Exactly mindtheelephant, you may be my style twin!

"Quick and easy is the way to go!!!!" If my DP was here he'd agree with you in more than one sense!

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 05/07/2012 18:14

Aha, must be a reaction to the "ironed hair" look. Have not noticed it here in London. Will keep eyes peeled.

Sad (but has always been the case) that teens don't know how lovely they are, or wear things/do things that spoil it

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 05/07/2012 18:17

Is it a posh school? back brushing has been trendy there for a v long time (decades probably).

It looks stupid though.

BenedictsCumberbitch · 05/07/2012 19:06

No not an exceptionally posh school. Bog standard comp. Plus as I say it's the young whippersnappers at work as well. It's just a young thing I think.
