Is fine if no one in your family takes it and it's poison anyway?

I remember going on a school trip to a honey farm and eating a whole jar of honey in the bus on the way back to school.

amigababy · 05/07/2012 11:45

French onion soup tonight - how would I do that without sugar? (though I've learned a bit since I was a foolish teen, when I mis-read the recipe and added 4 tablespoons of sugar not tsp, and then a bit more for good luck. It was a disgusting syrup mess!)

50ShadesOfSaggy · 05/07/2012 11:45

There is nothing wrong with sugar. Ever heard of a balanced healthy diet? It contains most things in moderation. If you ever buy any kind of pre packaged of processed food, then you are eating gross amounts of sugar and or salt. Many decent foods require sugar in one form or another. If you dont like white granulated, buy it in one of its less refined forms. Artificial sweeteners on the other hand are incredibly bad for you, and should definitely not be given cupboard space!
If I came to visit and you tried to foist tea with no sugar upon me, I'd be most put out, and would think you were a naf host!
So there! YABU. But don't worry, I still love you! Grin

Trills · 05/07/2012 11:46

Accusatory you was for the person who does not bake :o

Hullygully · 05/07/2012 11:46

A very close friend of mine had bowel cancer. He paid to see the toppest toppest nutritional consultant in the land.

The tippest toppest nutritional consultant in the land told him this: "Sugar is poison. One day the truth will come out and all hell will break loose."

So think on.

Oh I know what you meant trills, it just made me laugh. Grin

I LOVE it when people say think on.

happybubblebrain · 05/07/2012 11:58

Sugar is food.
Weed killer is poison.

happybubblebrain · 05/07/2012 11:59

I bet there isn't a single person in their 90s that didn't eat sugar.

MonkeyRisotto · 05/07/2012 12:01

I used to have sugar sandwiches as a kid :o

SoupDragon · 05/07/2012 12:02

Anything to excess isn't good for you.

Carrots for example.

LadyInDisguise · 05/07/2012 12:03

Actually I agree with Hully.
Sugar is one of the worst food that you can eat.
And it's addictive too.

ExitPursuedByABear · 05/07/2012 12:07

Eek Hully. Does sugar in Alcohol count?

MonkeyRisotto · 05/07/2012 12:09

It probably does depend on what you mean by sugar. After all, most plants contain sugars of one form or another. If you eat fruit you're eating sugar in the form of fructose.

Refined sugar does have a lot to answer for, it was one of the major causes of the slave trade, and its addition to processed foods is probably a significant factor in the current level of obesity.

I would still suggest that moderate consumption won't make your head fall off.

MonkeyRisotto · 05/07/2012 12:09

Hmm.. italics not working there....

GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 12:11

Re french onion soup, the onions will caramelise on their own, they don't need sugar (but sugar will speed it up). You need browned onions in curry, you just have to leave the buggers on a low heat for something insane like 40 minutes.

Shagmundfreud · 05/07/2012 12:16

Hully, sugar is a seasoning that can improve lots of dishes without making them bad news nutritionally.

I use it in pasta sauces and in Thai cooking.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 05/07/2012 12:32

The builders, won't somebody think of the builders ??! >

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2012 12:38

Geez... I feel as though I'm taken over by the stuff for cakes.

I thought I had ample supplies in for any impromptu baking but the other day discovered my Achilles'heel - light frickin' muscovado sugar.

Anyway I think YAB a little U as you should consider your guests, and anybody doing building work for you. I would challenge the stereotype but only the other week had 'White.... three sugars'.

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2012 12:39

x-post with Apocalypse!

Treacle is good for chilli con carne... but Shagmund & GetOrf make a very valid point.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/07/2012 12:44

I have been trying to cut out sugar in my tea for years.
I cant. Its horrid without sugar.

I keep my sugar in a cupboard with a padlock on it. True story.

madhairday · 05/07/2012 12:49

Lots of my friends and family take sugar and I take two one. We must be like, scummy scum or something. Grin

Sweetener, however, is the work of the Devil, and sachets are shit because they don't have a whole spoon of sugar. They have like half a spoon. If that. My pet hate is cafes that only give you one measly sachet with your huge cup of coffee. It's just wrong.

YABU. get yourself some sugar lumps. They'll never go off and they look posh.

MrJasc · 05/07/2012 13:00

How do you season your dishes if you don't have the basic stuff to adjust Sweet/Salt/Sour/Umami (sugar/salt/acid/glutamate)?

LadyInDisguise · 05/07/2012 13:14

glutamate?
Do you put glutamate in dishes that you are cooking??

Trills · 05/07/2012 13:15

It's a naturally-occurring amino acid. Lots of glutamate in parmesan and marmite and tomatoes

maddening · 05/07/2012 13:20

collect the little packets of sugar when you go to cafes and the like -. Is better than a bag of sugar open for ages that has black bits in (and invariably falls and spills)
