To think not keeping sugar in the house

Is fine if no one in your family takes it and it's poison anyway?

Oh yes salad dressing? Do none of you make your own? Sugar is vital.

lambethlil · 05/07/2012 10:40

Knick some sachets, or buy sugar lumps. They don't go hard Confused

badtasteflump · 05/07/2012 10:41

I never buy granulated sugar. If somebody visits and takes sugar in their tea, it has to be caster sugar (fished out and dusted off from the back of my 'baking' cupboard) Didn't realise that made me 'wierd' Grin

TroublesomeEx · 05/07/2012 10:43

No, sugar is a preservative. As long as it's kept dry it should be fine.

Bex66 · 05/07/2012 10:49

I keep a really small bit in the back of my cupboard for my step-father when he comes round

Backinthebox · 05/07/2012 11:02

Confused < this is my 'what, no sugar in the house at all?' face. What kind of a person would have no sugar? It's essential for all kinds of recipes, and essential for being a good host. I keep coffee and one of those little boxes of mixed fruit/herbal teas in although I wouldn't drink them myself, just in case a guest asks for it. It doesn't go off, doesn't cost much, and doesn't take up much space.

My cupboard resembles Umami's - lots of different kinds of sugar. And sprinkles. If you have flour, sugar, butter, eggs and sprinkles you can keep small children entertained for HOURS! And impress your OH when he gets in from work. And you have cake at the end of it!

Pah.

TubbyDuffs · 05/07/2012 11:06

I always have some for guests, and I use it in pasta sauces too (only a pinch or two!).

When I used to take sugar in my tea, it would have killed me to have to drink tea without it and I wouldn't have enjoyed it all.

Like mentioned previously, if you don't want to buy any in in bulk, get some sachets from the local cafe or some such place and keep them in the cupboard.

Trills · 05/07/2012 11:08

I have a friend who doesn't like any hot drinks but keeps in tea, coffee, hot chocolate powder and sugar, just for guests.

She is lovely.

Hullygully · 05/07/2012 11:22

WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE SLAVES?

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 11:25

You don't need sugar for salad dressings surely?

Trills · 05/07/2012 11:26

I know sugar lasts a long time but I don't think my Fairtrade Sainsbury's sugar is that old.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 11:27

I am AMAZED that nobody has come on to flame us all for suggesting stealing sugar sachets from coffee shops.

ErikNorseman · 05/07/2012 11:27

Of course you do! 1 tsp sugar to 25ml vinegar and 25ml olive oil. Without sugar it would taste vile and vinegary!

Cheriefroufrou · 05/07/2012 11:28

I used to have have guest sugar till ants got into the sugar caddy and took over my kitchen. No sugar or ants now!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 11:29

I just have dijon, oil, vinegar and salt and pepper. You don't need sugar in that. It would taste strange.

Trills · 05/07/2012 11:29

Think of all the times that you could have put 2 or 3 sugars in your coffee but didn't.

The cost of those sugars is included in the cost of your coffee.

You are owed a number of sachets.

People who do use sugar are freeloading off your non-sugar-using generosity!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 11:30

lol at 'you OWE me sugar' to starbucks.

I don't take milk. Perhaps I should nick one of those steel flasks of milk when I am next in there. And the pot of cinammon whilst I am at it.

Trills · 05/07/2012 11:31

What on earth would you do with cinnamon?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 11:31

Put it in a curry, dur brain. Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 05/07/2012 11:32

Lol at the accusatory you, in italics. Grin

Cheriefroufrou · 05/07/2012 11:33

its not essential for cooking at all, honey or maple syrup are much more natural and yummier and go well in things like tagines etc

Backinthebox · 05/07/2012 11:33

Put it on pancakes with maple syrup. Yum!

Cheriefroufrou · 05/07/2012 11:35

cinnamon goes in coffee and tagines
