to think our neighbour is spying on me through a wall?

We live in a semi but a semi that backs onto another house, so our entire back wall is another house's entire back wall IYSWIM. So upstairs we share a wall on our bedroom, the landing and our bathroom.

The only noise I ever hear from their house is that noise of a pull switch light cord. And the only time I ever hear it is just after I go to the bathroom at night before I go to bed. Whatever the time. I never hear it before or after. Without fail it is just after I leave the bathroom. I go to bed at very random times (DH works away...). it could be 8pm, it could be 1am. Whatever time it is, I always hear that cord go within 20 seconds of me leaving the bathroom...

Uuummmmmm AIBU to think I might be being spied on..??!!! How do I find out for sure?!!

I'll be sending DH into the loft to check when he gets home!!! We rent, so never ventured up there. There is a hatch though.

I started noticing it in March time.

You really must never ever ever read any Mo Hayder. Just sayin

doggiemumma · 01/07/2012 23:38

i used to think this about my neighbour and he is a bit of a weirdo - but i think it was just coincidence and i thought it because he is a bit of a weirdo.

What do you imagine they are spying on your For? how do they know that you are in the bathroom? do they listen for your "ping"?

holyfishnets · 01/07/2012 23:38

I think that you and your DH should knock around for the hollow spot.

takingiteasy · 01/07/2012 23:42

Freaky! I quite often hear my neighbour on the loo at the same time as me, it's terribly disconcerting to think we're practically strangers yet sitting a few feet from each other, doing our business every morning.

oshuk · 01/07/2012 23:44

I used to spend a lot of time with my ex away, and it was always then that things seemed to happen to me, from things going missing to heavy breather phone calls. Could they be trying to spook you? Do some asking around tomorrow, find out their name. Amazing what the internet can turn up with just a name.

SwedishEdith · 01/07/2012 23:45

Creepy thread and shuddering at "are your lofts joined?" Shock When were teh houses separated and who did it? Was it their house originally?

chaseandcatch · 01/07/2012 23:47

fuck reading this bed and feeling a bit spooked, DH then calling into bedroom (he's in his home office) asking me if I heard anything.

brabbinsandfyffe · 01/07/2012 23:48

You might be able to work out what number they are in the road behind you with googlemaps

gnocci · 01/07/2012 23:48

Yeh the loft thing has freaked me out too....

No idea when house was separated (was told this by letting agents) or by whom. Going by decor I would say 10years+ ago.

fedup2012 · 01/07/2012 23:48

Yes, it's a problem because the houses are joined, bathroom lights are often wired up to extractors and the wiring is probably still connected to it. You will probably find a dead fan hanging about somewhere, perhaps the switch is switching but there's no fan attached.

chaseandcatch · 01/07/2012 23:50

Oops posted to soon. He thinks he heard some 'try' the front door. Shock
Now shitting myself, nightmares tonight for me. Sad

doggiemumma · 01/07/2012 23:50

fedup, that is probably the answer, boring though eh :)

savoycabbage · 01/07/2012 23:51

I think fedup is right. It's far more likely that your light is connected to something somewhere that is clicking.

Sorry about making you think about the loftBlush it's morning where I am.

TheSpokenNerd · 01/07/2012 23:51

Gnocci don't use that light anymore...use a torch or keep the hall light on...just because it's better not to for now.

garlicbutt · 01/07/2012 23:55

I hate to say this, but I'd just stop worrying about it. Either you've got weird electrics, but nothing's fizzing or smelling so not dangerous. Or your other neighbour has an interest in your bedtime wee, whether that's being woken up by the loo or watching you use it. Bloody hell, if anybody's that sad I'd be inclined to chuckle superciliously about it and forget it or give them a comedy show.

An obvious test will be to NOT flush the loo or run the water for one night, see if it still happens. Also try leaving the bathroom dark one night. Same night for both would be less inconvenient, but also less satisfying!

Empusa · 01/07/2012 23:55

It seems more likely that you are hearing them switch the light on after being woken by you flushing the loo.

chase You ok?

totallypearshaped · 01/07/2012 23:57

It could be a motion sensor on an automatic camera - no need for them to be in their house when it's going on.

Try and find the camera in the daytime and cover it with toothpaste!
When they remove it to clean it there will be a hole.

Go to the loo in the dark.

takingiteasy · 01/07/2012 23:57

Spoken nerd that's really sinister sounding like you know something the op doesn't!

TheSpokenNerd · 01/07/2012 23:58

We don't know there IS a camera Pear! Don't freak her out! Very unlikely surely.

TheSpokenNerd · 01/07/2012 23:59

taking whoops! It IS isn't it! It was my effort at NOT being sinister too...I sadly managed the opposite!

savoycabbage · 01/07/2012 23:59

I think nerd just means its nighttime and gnocchi should not think about/investigate it nowGrin

Gibbous · 02/07/2012 00:00

Try not to worry too much OP, it's far more likely to be innocent, lots of possible (probable) answers on here.

TheSpokenNerd · 02/07/2012 00:00

Yes Savoy! that was it...Grin
