To want to keep my tumble dryer in my bedroom????

A few years ago while having a new kitchen fitted I put my condenser tumble dryer into my bedroom as a temporary measure....
It is still there - I love it there - think it is the best place for it...(got a separate freezer to fill its space in the kitchen!)
I sit on my bed while I sort out the socks /fold and sort into piles on the bed for distribution around the house - often put my things straight into the drawer....
It also generates heat (and is a good condenser -so I don't get condensation etc) - makes bedroom nice and toasty in winter - sometimes wait to put it on until bathtime then get youngest one dressed in there ...
My mum hates it - I don't really know why - 'you don't keep a tumble dryer in a bedroom'

Now have a new house that needs work and was talking to my mum about where to put things - it has a cloakroom/utility room area downstairs next to a loo - and was talking about redesigning it and said I would leave room for a tumble dryer (for if we ever sell) but think I'd rather have it in my bedroom if I can -
She went absolutely mad at me ....put the phone down...how could I be so stupid, why do I want to ruin a nice house etc etc ...
So is it that mad? Can anyone see why I might prefer it there?
(Would be better if it didn't look so like a kitchen appliance - maybe a business opportunity - make ones that look more at home in a bedroom?)

I think op has probably made a decision by now.....

MusicToMyEars800 · 07/01/2017 13:40

I would love a tumble dryer in my bedroom ( no space for one at all in my place though Sad ) the sound is relaxing makes the room smell really good and keeps the room warm!! so lucky you I say and yadnbu, oh and as others said it saves you a trip up the stairs to put the clothes away when they are dry

JsOtherHalf · 07/01/2017 13:42

Lots of smaller American homes have this sort of arrangement in a cupboard .

Fallen for yet another zombie thread....

Jaxhog · 07/01/2017 13:45

I'd wouldn't have thought of doing it, but it makes sense. I guess it wouldn't work if you ran it at night, like we do.

Don't see what it has to do with your mum though.

Is the OP's mum still not talking to her?

neveradullmoment99 · 07/01/2017 13:58

Maybe it is a fire safety issue.
No way would i sleep with a tumble dryer on. A tumble dryer on in the bedroom while you sleep for me would be a no no. What if a fire started? I dont trust leaving a washing machine or dryer on while i sleep. If i go out, then fine when noone is in the house. Objects etc can be replaced. No to a tumble dryer or washing machine left on esp in a bedroom.
Having a tumble dryer in your room is fine apart from leaving it on while you sleep.

I totally agree that the logical place for a washing machine and drier is upstairs, ideally in a communal dressing room that houses everybodies clothes too to stop kids flinging clean clothing under the bed . I really do not understand why its such a out there thing in the uk. In Europe it's quite common for washing machines to be in the bathroom and Japanese bathrooms are AMAZING! they are totally geared up for washing and drying clothes as well as people and they even have a built in baby bath/sink! Totally more advanced than us.

I've had my tumble drier in my bedroom for the last few weeks because we are having a conservatory/utility room built. I've been thinking about leaving it there but wondered if that was a bit weird. So glad I read this thread! Unfortunately I can't use the bed for folding/sorting as we've somehow allowed our little French Bulldog to start sleeping with us so the bed can be a bit hairy and gritty!

woodhill · 07/01/2017 14:28

May give you condensation and damp, be careful with ventilation.

8misskitty8 · 07/01/2017 15:17

We have ours in the spare bedroom which is were we have the clothes horse and the washing basket and ironing pile as well. So it's really a laundry room !
So window is always latched open.
It's a vented hose one so window is open more when it is on so condensation not an issue.
Bought it about 6mths ago, never had one before. Absolutely love it. Towels are so soft and fluffy. Dd2 was really sick about a month after we got it. Was great being able to get all the bed covers and towels washed right away instead of draping them all over the house.

marthastew · 07/01/2017 17:23

Ours is in the shed at the end of the garden - it's great having one but I'd love it to be closer and upstairs would be perfect!

I once visited a house that had a hatch on the landing into which you put all dirty laundry that went down a shoot to the utility room. It was a 1960s house. Genius.

Mrswinkler · 07/01/2017 17:42

In New Zealand I've often seen what looks like a built in wardrobe housing washing machine, tumble drier, airing shelves etc. If you had room you could also have a poke with coat hangars etc. Keep the hoover and ironing board in there whilst you are at it.

RedastheRose · 07/01/2017 19:02

Rented a house a few years ago with a built in utility room upstairs next to main bedroom with washer dryer and ironing board in it. Was the best thing ever, no lugging washing downstairs and up again, so easy to put on in the morning and pop stuff in the dryer and fold and put away without hassle. Most organised I have ever been with the washing 😄 This is your new house so do what you want and what suits you and your family.

emmyhNL · 07/01/2017 19:20

We have our washing machine in the attic as it's the warmest place for the clothes to dry easily so just transfer and keep everything on one level. So simple!

Patriciathestripper1 · 07/01/2017 19:25

Mine is in my clothes room next to my bedroom (clothes room is our third bedroom fitted out with rails and shoe racks)
Absolutely love it up there.

pineapplecrush · 07/01/2017 19:44

Mine's in the dining room. I used to have the washing machine and tumble dryer in the garage before we got a new kitchen 6 years ago. Washing machine in the kitchen but not enough space for dryer. Just throw a cloth over it if we have anyone over for a meal which doesn't happen much.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/01/2017 19:54

We've just ripped out our small integrated washing machine from the kitchen and installed a new bigger one upstairs in our bathroom alongside a heat pump dryer. It's all built in but it's going to be so much better than traipsing washing through the house and then having wet laundry everywhere.

(i know it's a zombie but the conversation has kind of restarted!)

user1481140239 · 07/01/2017 20:15

Why was your mum so upset? that is mental. It's your house and you're not hurting anybody. Do what you want.

millymollymandy82 · 07/01/2017 22:06

When you think about it, it's pretty ridiculous that the standard place for a washing machine and a tumble dryer is downstairs, yet the washing all belongs upstairs. Keep it in your bedroom, sod your mum.

Daisyfrumps · 07/01/2017 22:31

Zombie

Ohyesiam · 07/01/2017 22:40

Your mother is curiously over invested in your white goods. She needs a hobby.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 07/01/2017 23:21

This thread is a revelation! It would NEVER have even occurred to me to put washing/dryer upstairs but, reading the responses (zombie thread so what!!) my mind is blown!!! Desperately thinking how I can rehome these appliances upstairs now!!!!

Dragongirl10 · 07/01/2017 23:49

I used to live in the states and most houses have an upstairs laundry room, when we extended our house back in the Uk l installed a small laundry room off the upstairs landing, its my favourite room!.....washing machine, tumble dryer, industrial flat iron, lots of hanging space and drawers for bedding and towels...dcs undress and put their grubby clothes straight in the laundry basket..

I have just installed a small TV to help with the ironing.........!
