To want to keep my tumble dryer in my bedroom????

unlucky67 · 01/07/2012 15:36

A few years ago while having a new kitchen fitted I put my condenser tumble dryer into my bedroom as a temporary measure....
It is still there - I love it there - think it is the best place for it...(got a separate freezer to fill its space in the kitchen!)
I sit on my bed while I sort out the socks /fold and sort into piles on the bed for distribution around the house - often put my things straight into the drawer....
It also generates heat (and is a good condenser -so I don't get condensation etc) - makes bedroom nice and toasty in winter - sometimes wait to put it on until bathtime then get youngest one dressed in there ...
My mum hates it - I don't really know why - 'you don't keep a tumble dryer in a bedroom'

Now have a new house that needs work and was talking to my mum about where to put things - it has a cloakroom/utility room area downstairs next to a loo - and was talking about redesigning it and said I would leave room for a tumble dryer (for if we ever sell) but think I'd rather have it in my bedroom if I can -
She went absolutely mad at me ....put the phone down...how could I be so stupid, why do I want to ruin a nice house etc etc ...
So is it that mad? Can anyone see why I might prefer it there?
(Would be better if it didn't look so like a kitchen appliance - maybe a business opportunity - make ones that look more at home in a bedroom?)

I am like Viviennemary in that I was alarmed at the idea of keeping the dryer in the bedroom.

I had a metal image of a big white machine sitting there being obvious and making the room look like a bedsit. But having read all the responses I have changed my mind.

Now I want to know why it isnt an option for most people. Apart from the faff of using the back garden/yard for drying (on the 1.5 drying days we get) I see no good reason for the washing machine being downstairs.

My eyes have been opened and Im am now looking speculatively around my wee house to see if there is space upstairs for my laundry room.

GnocchiNineDoors · 01/07/2012 16:39

My parents used to keep theirs in their bedroom. Then they moved somewhere with a large bathroom which is where it now lives.

If and when we get a tumble, it will go in our bedroom.

missnevermind · 01/07/2012 16:44

Oohh the house we are moving into has the boiler on the upstairs landing which we are taking out.

I love you lot!
Washing machine and tumble dryer in its place, right next to the bathroom, shouldnt be too much work - right?
And then I will have room in the kitchen for the dishwasher.

Win win?

I've seen washers and dryers in a landing cupboard which seemed like a good place for them - I wouldn't want one in my bedroom just because theyr're ugly but then I hardly used mine until the last couple months of crap weather. I've just been on holiday where the dryer was in the hall outside my bedroom and it was seriously loud and annoying when I wanted to sleep, but it was very loud, I was always wanting to sleep (young baby) and there was almost always laundry drying (two children wetting beds and three making a mess!).

I see the point about having to lug clothes down to the kitchen to wash - I used to live in a house with bedrooms on the ground floor but a laundry room in the basement, with a chute under the kitchen sink to throw the clothes down, which always struck me as very wierd - why take your dirty clothes to the kitchen? Though in my house both washer and dryer have to be in the kitchen as there's no space elsewhere apart from the under-stairs cupboard - getting a full size suite in a 5x8 foot bathroom was an achievement!

letsblowthistacostand · 01/07/2012 16:50

I have my w/d in the upstairs bathroom. So convenient.

CurrySpice · 01/07/2012 16:55

Personally I wouldn't want a tumble drier in my bedroom but I think your mom may be making a drama out of nothing! She put the phone down?! WTAF?

HellonHeels · 01/07/2012 17:07

Ha ha ha I proper laughed at the thought of your mum becoming so irate over a dryer in the bedroom!

She sounds somewhat...er...dramatic :o

YANBU to put a dryer wherever is most convenient to you.

valiumredhead · 01/07/2012 17:14

We used to have the direr in ds's bedroom at our old flat as the kitchen was so small and his room was massive. Kept it covered with a throw when not in use and it was barely noticeable.

Your mum sounds a bit bonkers Grin

mumcanihavearabbit maybe our mothers could form a support group for people with unreasonable daughters who refuse to do things properly!

Laquitar · 01/07/2012 17:23

Maybe your mum thought that it serves other purposes in the bedroom? Grin
Sorry, all this talk about sexual fantasies and that book you know...

I'd love to have the w/m and the dryer upstairs, ideally in the bathroom.
Can you cover it with something when not in use? Just do what suits you its YOUR house.

Can i ask a stupid question please? I keep reading about dryers and fires. So what you do if it catches fire? Blush (i mean apart from getting kids out, calling 999)

HellonHeels · 01/07/2012 17:44

You can prevent a dryer catching fire by regularly clearing out the lint trap and vent hose thingy.

You should not leave them running when no one is home and should switch off or unplug when not in use.

Your home should have working smoke alarms that are checked regularly.

HellonHeels · 01/07/2012 17:46

I'm not sure about actions to be taken when it's already on fire. I think evacuating people and pets and calling 999 is best, leave firefighting to experts.

Wrigglebum · 01/07/2012 17:50

We have our dryer in the airing cupboard upstairs, where the hot water was before the boiler was changed to a combi. It's a great place for it, we weren't really using the space before we put the dryer in there.

Bunbaker · 01/07/2012 17:58

"Washing machine and tumble dryer in its place, right next to the bathroom, shouldnt be too much work - right?"

I think your floor has to be strong enough to withstand the vibrations, so not all houses would be suitable for a washing machine upstairs. Also you need enough water pressure to fill the machine efficiently.

Nanny0gg · 01/07/2012 18:11

And one other thought - the dust?
Even though it's a condenser, isn't it still terribly dusty?
Wouldn't like to sleep with that.

MonarchoftheGarioch · 01/07/2012 18:11

I also used to have a washer/dryer in my bathroom and it was sooo convenient - makes so much more sense to have it there than in the kitchen. Biggest advantage was being able to train OH to put his sweaty gym gear straight in the machine when he had a shower rather than leaving it festering on the kitchen floor Wink

Laquitar · 01/07/2012 18:25

Thank you HellonHeels Smile

HellonHeels · 01/07/2012 18:32

Hope it never happens Laquitar Good idea to be prepared in advance though :)

charlieandlola · 01/07/2012 18:38

An upstairs laundry /ironing room has transformed my life. It is brilliant and has made the whole thing so much easier .

McHappyPants2012 · 01/07/2012 19:47

I would get a cupboard to put the dryer in and paint it the same colour as the room

Pannacotta · 02/07/2012 14:30

Cant see the problem, your Mum sounds a little bit barking!

We are converting a small upstairs loo which we dont use into a washer/drier cupboard, much easier to organise washing and drying that way without having to lug it up and down the stairs, esp as we dont use the outside line much at all.

Go for it....

TheCunningStunt · 02/07/2012 14:37

Oooh that sounds ideal! Id love my washer in the bathroom too. Would save so much time!

imnotmymum · 02/07/2012 14:41

I could not possibly under any circumstances have a tumble drier in my bedroom. Sounds madness and would make me feel like I was living in a bedsit. I am with your Mum on this OP. I mean a tumble drier in your actual bedroom

valiumredhead · 02/07/2012 14:44

Oh please - seriously, a drier in your bedroom is not something to faint about!

imnotmymum · 02/07/2012 14:45

Really. Is it normal. A tumble drier?
