To want to keep my tumble dryer in my bedroom????

A few years ago while having a new kitchen fitted I put my condenser tumble dryer into my bedroom as a temporary measure....
It is still there - I love it there - think it is the best place for it...(got a separate freezer to fill its space in the kitchen!)
I sit on my bed while I sort out the socks /fold and sort into piles on the bed for distribution around the house - often put my things straight into the drawer....
It also generates heat (and is a good condenser -so I don't get condensation etc) - makes bedroom nice and toasty in winter - sometimes wait to put it on until bathtime then get youngest one dressed in there ...
My mum hates it - I don't really know why - 'you don't keep a tumble dryer in a bedroom'

Now have a new house that needs work and was talking to my mum about where to put things - it has a cloakroom/utility room area downstairs next to a loo - and was talking about redesigning it and said I would leave room for a tumble dryer (for if we ever sell) but think I'd rather have it in my bedroom if I can -
She went absolutely mad at me ....put the phone down...how could I be so stupid, why do I want to ruin a nice house etc etc ...
So is it that mad? Can anyone see why I might prefer it there?
(Would be better if it didn't look so like a kitchen appliance - maybe a business opportunity - make ones that look more at home in a bedroom?)

Abroad they're often in the bathroom, or an upstairs cupboard, or (my favourite) in America they have 'laundry nooks'. I do like a nook. YANBU.

shuffleballchange · 02/07/2012 14:52

I want one in my bedroom now, what a brilliant idea. We haven't got one at all, oh how I would love a tumble dryer

HeadfirstForHalos · 02/07/2012 14:55

Who gives a shit whether it's "normal" or not?

I think it makes perfect sense actually. I mostly line dry so I'm happy to keep my washing machine downstairs, but I'm not about to get irate about someone wanting their washer/drier upstairs Wink

valiumredhead · 02/07/2012 14:56

I agree head

If your kitchen hasn't the space - bung it upstairs!

imnotmymum · 02/07/2012 14:58

Not irate just aghast. I have been heavily conditioned from birth though about household stuff. My Mum irons tea towels and puts the kettle away as it looks untidy I am genetically odd.

valiumredhead · 02/07/2012 14:59

Where does she put it? [conditioned]

Your mum is bonkers, you know that, right? Grin

NoGoodNamesLeft · 02/07/2012 15:00

Puts the kettle... away. flabbergasted Surely a better solution would be to get one of those boiling water taps?

I love the idea of a laundry room upstairs. We are SO lazy about keeping on top of washing and drying and this would help no end.

valiumredhead · 02/07/2012 15:00

See, I am so shocked at your mum, I fucked up my Confused face!

HeadfirstForHalos · 02/07/2012 15:01

Putting the kettle away Grin

imnotmymum · 02/07/2012 15:02

She is bonkers! In a cupboard when not using it and the toaster well actually I do that ...

EastDulwichWife · 14/01/2016 10:04

In our last place we had the washing machine in the kitchen, which was fine because we had a small flat and everything was on the same level - not too far to walk with the basket!

Our new house, a semi, had a separate loo next door to the bathroom. With a bit of jigging we put the loo into the bathroom and turned the old loo into a utility room. Washer and dryer, stacked, with shelves around the walls for towels/bedding and cleaning products. I love it! Why the obsession with downstairs utility just to bring it all upstairs again I have no idea! :)

Liam2012 · 07/01/2017 12:57

See the ones that put tumble dryers in bedroom do use have carpet??

Ncbecauseitshard · 07/01/2017 13:03

But you have to cart wet washing around to use it?
I like my bedroom for rest and not chores. I can't see the appeal.

dollydaydream114 · 07/01/2017 13:06

I wouldn't want a tumble-dryer in my bedroom but that's just me - if it works for you, what the hell has it got to with your mum?! Your house, your preference. Sounds like it suits your needs so what's the problem?

Frazzled2207 · 07/01/2017 13:10

I fail to see how it's anything to do with your mum.

As long as the noise doesn't bother anyone I can't see the issue. In fact having both washing machine and tumble on same floor as bedrooms makes sense to me.
Our utility room is in the cellar so we have to lug stuff up and down two floors (the horror!)

YelloDraw · 07/01/2017 13:14

I visited a fried. When we were about 16 and was shocked that she had a tumble dryer in her bedroom but it was vented and her mum came in to dry a load of washing so opened the window to stick out the vent!

I think WM and TD make sense in bathrooms or upstairs utility cupboards.

When I moved out of my parent's house I lived in a tiny terrace house. The biggest room in the house was the bathroom and so that's where the plumbing for the waahing machine was. Was really sensible to keep it upstairs and the one time he machine flooded it went onto a stone tiled floor. No dramas. :)

Your choice of placement seems sensible to me. :)

Oh and I also moved to a double glazed detached house back in the summer. The first night we were here I hoovered at 11pm and then put the washing machine on. :) I love that I no longer have to be really careful about noise re neighbours.

EuropeanSwallow · 07/01/2017 13:32

We had a laundry nook just off the master bedroom in an apartment we rented before buying this house, it was so neat and compact and easy to transfer everything for folding on the bed and putting away.
We have a one level house now so no stairs to cart things up and down, the utility room is next to the kitchen and it works for me but if we were to redesign the layout, I'd definitely reconfigure the master suite to incorporate the laundry given we do have a lot of space.
Most of the (new or upgraded) two-storey homes we looked at before we bought had their utility rooms or laundry nooks upstairs, seems to be the thing now here, USA, and imo the most convenient and sensible thing. If it suits you to have your dryer in the bedroom, assuming adequate ventilation and humidity control, why not? I don't get why it bothers your mum, is it an aesthetic thing? Even so, it's not in her house and it's not like your visitors are going to be going in your bedroom and seeing it are they?

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 07/01/2017 13:32

I wouldn't because of the dust - ours is just inside our shed door and on bright days you can see how much dust flies out when you wipe the lint filter, I do it outside the door for this reason. But if you've had it in your bedroom before and not had a problem then why not?

Sgtmajormummy · 07/01/2017 13:33

Just a techie piece of advice. Grin
A more modern heat pump tumble dryer rather than simple condenser emits less humidity into the room.
It costs more to buy but less to run.
And I know quite a few people with dryers upstairs, OP.

thatdearoctopus · 07/01/2017 13:33

We looked round some new-builds in the USA a few years back and they all had the laundry room upstairs. The (massive, industrial-size) washing machines were in large basins in case of leaks. Saved you ever having to traipse up and down the stairs with baskets of clothes.

Flowersonthewall · 07/01/2017 13:35

This thread is 4 years old! However I agree why not have your WM and TD upstairs. Makes perfect sense

C8H10N4O2 · 07/01/2017 13:35

Why does she care? At least to the extent she would put the phone down on you? I think that is far more odd than any tumble drier location.

wonderingsoul · 07/01/2017 13:35
