To be nervous about taking my kindle on holibobs?

Arabellasmella · 30/06/2012 20:32

What do other kindle owners do about holidays? On the one hand it would be nice to download a couple of books to take on holiday but on the other hand will I be nervous about it getting to get nicked every time I go in the pool/swimming pool? Am I being ridiculous? Does everyone take them???
Advice gratefully received...

YABU for saying holibobs

GwendolineMaryLacey · 30/06/2012 20:34

That's what they're for! :)

Eggrules · 30/06/2012 20:36

Agree with GwendolineMaryLacey. Every second person will have one.

MikeLitoris · 30/06/2012 20:37

I took mine on my jollys recently and 99% of people round the pool had them.

I didnt actually get to read it mind

smoggii · 30/06/2012 20:37

Where on earth are you going that you are worried your stuff will be nicked the second you turn your back on your sun lounger

somedayma · 30/06/2012 20:38

YABU for saying 'holibobs'. Nothing irritates me more than that 'word'. It's not even a shortened version of the original!

Moomoomie · 30/06/2012 20:38

duckinghell that is exactly what I was going to say.Grin

yellowraincoat · 30/06/2012 20:39

As others said re holibobs.

YABU about the Kindle. What's the point if you don't take it places? Otherwise you could just buy the books.

Seona1973 · 30/06/2012 20:40

I always made sure it was back in the beach bag before going in the pool/wandering off.

angeltattoo · 30/06/2012 20:41

But if you take 6 books instead, it will defeat the object?

It'll be fine; I love mine too but and I'm on kindle number 2. They are relatively cheap and easily replaceable. By that I mean that obviously they are quite expensive, but not as expensive as an iphone, ipad, playbook etc so thieves more likely to go for other, more expensive items. And all your purchases are back up online, and transferable.

On the otherhand, I won't read it in the bath because I would drop it each time and be on kindle #762 by now...

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 30/06/2012 20:42

Holibobs? Holibobs?! A little bit of sick just came up. YABU.

JoannaFight · 30/06/2012 20:42

What about sand on the beach? (I haven't even got one yetGrin)

Also is a screen protector a good idea and if so which one? Sorry to hijack your thread ArabellaBlush

bigTillyMint · 30/06/2012 20:44

WTF are holibobs? Is that where Michael McIntyre goes in the summer?

landofsoapandglory · 30/06/2012 20:45

I'm taking mine. I've bought a waterproof thing to put it in when I am by the pool. I am looking forward to not having the usual argument with DH about the amount of books I am taking and baggage weight allowances.

I have been banned from taking my iPadSad.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 30/06/2012 20:47

Getting past the holibobs thing, of course you should take your kindle on holiday, that's what it's for.

Holiday is the only time I ever reclaim my kindle, it seems to be in ds's possession most of the time.

Last year by the pool I didn't close the cover and accidentally put a wet towel directly on it. It messed up the screen, but Amazon replaced it for a new one free of charge, and loaded all our books onto the new one before they sent it to me. So no real harm done, especially as it was on the last day of the holiday, but I'd advise not making the mistake I did.

JoannaFight · 30/06/2012 20:49

Ooh waterproof thingy good idea! Does that mean you can read a Kindle in the bath after all? That was one of my worries.

Arabellasmella · 30/06/2012 20:56

thanks all, apologies for the terminology, I don't know where that came from actually, i can assure you that the word has never left my lips before in real life! Am excited to hear that kindles by the pool are the norm. Going to plan my reading now! (and maybe look into covers as haven't bothered with one so far)

I presume so, Joanna. I don't have baths (can't get in and out) so don't really know for sure. I bought because I am scared that my Kindle will get splashed by someone near the pool and then I'll be without reading material.

Sallyingforth · 30/06/2012 21:51

Just be careful what you read there. You don't want to be sitting on the beach biting your lip :)

medievalgirl · 30/06/2012 22:07

Holibobs???????? Please, no.

MadamFolly · 30/06/2012 22:24

Have never heard the word Holibobs before but am actually quite taken with it.

hifi · 30/06/2012 22:31

Everything was wiped from mine last hols, thank god we had laptop with us.

squareegg · 30/06/2012 22:35

Dd came back from backpacking with hers intact, and she dropped it off a mountain... They are hardy!

merryberry · 30/06/2012 22:39

Just don't sit back in plane, with kids strapped in, taxiing for take-off, place your kindle in the pouch in front of you and snap shut the pingy elastic thing back on to it with a smug feeling of 'yay, finally, we're off, there's my book ready and a drink soon, woo hoo'. That way you crack the screen, lose your loving crafted and much anticipated reading list and have to rely on the tender mercies of the left-behind book library where you're staying. Eclectic, yes, interesting, not so.

Rollmops · 30/06/2012 22:46

What's holibobs?
Kindle can be easily replaced, first edition books on the other hand....Hmm
