AIBU to think that Converse trainers are too expensive!

£40 for a pair of trainers. I am sure that a few years ago they cost about £25. I would love a pair but £40 is too much. Bah.

I have 5 pairs of pretendy Converse from Sainsburys - total £40. And they fit me better (Converse too narrow)

Itsgottabebags · 01/07/2012 18:19

Got mine at TK Maxx and didn't pay that much!

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2012 18:31

I have three pairs of Cons going strong. The youngest is four years old and the oldest is 25 years old! I reckon that's pretty good value for money.

cardibach · 01/07/2012 18:33

I find them good value for money as they last pretty much forever. I also have large feet (size 9/10) and as the classic styles are availabel in all the sizes I can buy them. Otherwise it's Evans shoes or very expensive specialist companies.

holyfishnets · 01/07/2012 20:12

wouldn't call them trainers as you can't exercise in them! more fashion plimsolls. i do like them though

LucieMay · 01/07/2012 20:17

Converse were never worn by the cool kids back in the day. In the 90s they were worn by grungers and metalheads. Only the past few years they've become more mainstream.

BridgetJonesPants · 01/07/2012 20:23

In my day (late 70's) it was all the kids who played basketball who wore converse.

WhiteWidow · 01/07/2012 20:30

I don't think that's expensive for trainers.

LucieMay · 01/07/2012 20:33

Bridget I meant to point out to the person who called them plimsoles that they're basketball boots. They've been going for years in America I think.

cocolepew · 01/07/2012 20:33

Im 43 and dont remember them being worn by anyone! I first got them in the US 20 years ago while on holiday so I must have thought they were trendy.

I was very cool Wink

germyrabbit · 01/07/2012 20:40

i was looking at some last night on Office, £33 with the code: 15OFFJULY

couldn't decide what colour to get though, quite fancy white or khaki Grin

RedBlanket · 01/07/2012 20:44

My real trainers, the ones I actually run in, we're £80. Converse are cheap in comparison.

Hulababy · 01/07/2012 20:53

I like the look of them and have a pink pair but hey give me sore feet, I find them too narrow :( dd has a fab pair though

lazarusb · 01/07/2012 21:02

LucieMay As an old grunger/metalhead I agree - the cool kids would never have been seen dead in them Grin

annekins · 01/07/2012 21:03

I love love converse. I even had a silver glittery pair for my wedding shoes..they were AMAZING (though they have sat in their box for the last 18months). They were the only shoes I wore when I was preggie and are the only shoes I'm wearing now on maternity leave (except flipflops). God help when I go back to work in Oct, have to wear proper shoes!

they are well worth every penny IMO

just bought a pair of Lee Cooper lookie likeys and they aren't half as comfortable as Converse

i shall be investing in a proper pair asap"

eurochick · 01/07/2012 21:08

I wore some Converse for the first time today. I was actually surprised when I bought them that they are not more expensive.

cocolepew · 01/07/2012 22:02

Uncharted they're for DD though not me Grin. She's already nicked a pair of brown suede boots, a pair of black leather hi tops and a limited edition pair of lo tops I got in NYC off me.

She deserves to suffer.

cocolepew · 01/07/2012 22:05

I got a pair of dark brown leather hi tops, there's no white on them at all, about 4 years ago. They are the most comfortable things I have ever put on my feet, unbelievably soft. I wear them to death.

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2012 22:14

I may be showing my age here LucieMay, but when I was at school in the 1980s (big London comp) all the cool kids wore Converse. We ( I was cool once!) got them from a shop on the King's Road called Meeney's and wore them with old 501s from Flip or American Classics (v lefty school, no uniform).
