to think that this is rather smug of Nationwide?

I bank with Nationwide and do quite a bit of online banking. On their homepage there's a banner across the top saying "Important information: RBS/Natwest/Ulster Bank Group are currently experiencing ongoing technical problems. If you think this may affect you, find out what to do."

AIBU to think that this is a rather saintly smug PA attempt to be 'helpful'? :o

I don't see what's so bad about it.. of course they aren't acting out of the kindness of their hearts.. but do banks ever do?

BiscuitNibbler · 29/06/2012 15:13

Isn't it more likely to be aimed at people with a Nationwide mortgage but a current account at one of the affected banks? Think you're over-thinking this.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 29/06/2012 15:14

Or if you receive your pay / payments from one of the affected banks

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 29/06/2012 15:26

If say your mortgage bounced because your employer uses RBS/Natwest/Ulster bank, then you'd need that kind of advice...

Far from saintly. Just informative.

And I have no love for Nationwide.

SoupDragon · 29/06/2012 15:32

How on earth is it smug?

AKMD · 29/06/2012 15:36

Just me being cynical then.

Is it the "find out what to do" (putting the onus on the customer) instead of "here's what to do"? That is fairly crap service.

squeakytoy · 29/06/2012 16:35

How is it smug... people who bank with nationwide may be waiting for payments from those who bank with NatWest, and could well be suffering because of that too..

LentillyFart · 29/06/2012 16:43

Now if it said "Hahabloodyhaha at NatWest's fuck up" then you might have a case for accusing them of smuggery but as it stands? Nah.

AKMD · 29/06/2012 17:50

To be fair Floggingmolly, the 'find out what to do' bit is a link to tell you what to do :)

Ulster Bank's banks systems are still down. Another local bank have openly said they're trying to convince people to move accounts and are launching an ad campaign.

mintsauceandgravy · 29/06/2012 19:06

To be fair, I worked for Nationwide for 6 years (left in march) and they are incredible smug about everything. They also have a disgraceful sales culture but thats another thread.....

gamerwidow · 29/06/2012 19:13

Not smug but misleading. My sister's DH banks with Nationwide and didn't get his wages in last week because his work banks with Natwest. He phoned them up to ask for a temporary overdraft for a couple of days to stop the DDs bouncing and give him money for the food shop. Nationwide's response "Your the only person to phone complaining about, this there's nothing we can do, you'll just have to pay the charges and cope".
