Crazy Mad Neighbour

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:14

Ive recently moved into my parents house in between selling one house / buying another...

I used to live here (until about 7 years ago) and know most of the neighbours as my parents have been here for donkeys years. My dog (a spaniel) my DH and our baby are staying here too obviously...

Yesterday my mum was having a quote from a builder for some windows and he seemed genuinely terrified of the dogs. (my mums dog, another spaniel.) so my mum popped hers in the garden and I took mine for a walk with the pram.

Looked like it was about to rain so just walked up and down our street so I could see when the builder left.

A man stormed out of his house over to me and said 'We don't allow dogs here!'

A normal street in Surrey with semi detached houses.... Not a private road or development or anything.

I pleasantly told him I'd be gone in a minute anyway as I was just waiting for a builder to leave.

He raised his voice A LOT and said again 'we Do NOT allow dogs here!!'

I pointed at my mums house and said that I lived there, and it was a public street. And that she's lived there for 40 years and has always had a dog.

He said he had been there 50 years and that dogs weren't welcome on his street.

Then his wife came out holding a small plate and said 'We do not allow dogs here!!'

It was very confusing, I continued to walk up the street and they stood there and watched me go up and down, tutting etc.

I saw the builder leave and crossed to go back to my mums and she said, be careful or I'll throw my plate at your dog.'

Genuinely baffled. As is my mum. She's walked a dog here an average of twice a day for years.

I'm a bit worried to go for a walk later.... Hmm

How bizarre! Were you near their house, on a front lawn or something? Are the houses privately owned?

MammaTJ · 28/06/2012 11:16

What a pair of absolute loons!! Grin

manicbmc · 28/06/2012 11:17

So long as your dog was on a lead and under control, I reckon they sound a bit mad.

Make sure you have your mother with you when you go out later so you have a witness to their lunacy.

BumpingFuglies · 28/06/2012 11:19

Don't see how they can "allow" or "not allow" dogs! Confused

OlaRapaceFru · 28/06/2012 11:19

How odd! Even if they thought you were some random dog walker who'd wandered into their street, how come they've never noticed your mum?

And why on earth would they want to throw a plate at your dog, too? Grin

HecateHarshPants · 28/06/2012 11:19

I would ask the community police to go round and make it clear to them that it is unacceptable to threaten you and your dog and that they actually have no authority to ban dogs from the street!

Wheezo · 28/06/2012 11:19

Do you have a phone with a recording/video function? Keep your demeanour pleasant as you have done (despite their threats of physical violence to your dog) and have your phone ready to record when you next go out - and if they appear and start with the same business I would just calmly say, while recording them, what you've already said: public road, etc and that if they continue to make threats to you or your dog you will be reporting them to the police for harassment. WTF - "his" street. Send him back inside to find his title deeds (am tempted to use the word fuckbadger just for the hell of it now following other thread!)

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2012 11:20

Are you sure your dog didn't shit on the pavement without you noticing?

This is one of the weirdest things I've read Confused

MammaTJ · 28/06/2012 11:20

I agree with Hecate! PCSOs are very good at this sort of thing, light touch at first then heavy if needed.

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:21

I walked past the house once, then was coming back on the other side.

In all honesty my dog can be all over the place pulling on his lead, but he's fairly terrified of the pram so was walking amazingly :p (thank god!)

He hadn't gone yet, I hadn't been out that long and he'd already been out in the morning with my DH.

(but if he had I would've picked it up...)

Petsinmypudenda · 28/06/2012 11:23

Pure bred nutters. I would get the PCSO's to as she threatened to throw a plate at your dog.

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2012 11:24

Was he on a stretchy lead and ran into their front garden?

snuffaluffagus · 28/06/2012 11:25

Haha! Oh god! It sounds like they were channelling Tubs and Edward, only directing their ire at dogs rather than non locals.. careful or there'll be a dognap on your hands.. what odd people!!

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:25

It's so odd though...

I wonder if she was having a sandwich or something or she literally grabbed it as a weapon Grin

And he's just a little spaniel. Quite inoffensive... Or so I thought!

PandaWatch · 28/06/2012 11:26

Definitely get the PCSO! Shock

What horrible people - they sound completely deranged!

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:26

Worra - no. He's on a normal lead wrapped around my wrist with my hands on the buggy.

I know. I don't get it either....

OP posts:
Petsinmypudenda · 28/06/2012 11:26

We should organise a mumsnet dog flash mob to walk up and down the road.

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:29

There'll be crockery everywhere!

OP posts:
PandaWatch · 28/06/2012 11:30

They'll have to resort to using the fine china!

BumpingFuglies · 28/06/2012 11:30

Do you think they are "all there" OP? Does your mum know them at all?

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:32

I described to my mum that they live about 15 houses down and described the front garden and that they've been here forever... She thought she knew who I meant but wasn't positive. Almost everyone around here has been here for ages....

OP posts:
Kitchentiles · 28/06/2012 11:33

Does your mum know them? Ever spoken to them before? Just wondering if they have always been crackers or it's a new thing.

geegee888 · 28/06/2012 11:37

How wierd! However wierdness aside, my guess would be that they're the local bullies, one of them is a control freak and the other used to following his orders. In which case, since you are likely to contact them again, I'd contact the community police as suggested (as they made threats against your property) and video them if they do it again.

It also sounds like its because they don't recognise you, and are sort of policing their street against strangers. Wierder still!

Almost as strange still is the builder who is terrified of spaniels! Wierd place!

PooPooInMyToes · 28/06/2012 11:38

That's so weird! I agree with getting the pcsos to have a word.
