Crazy Mad Neighbour

Ive recently moved into my parents house in between selling one house / buying another...

I used to live here (until about 7 years ago) and know most of the neighbours as my parents have been here for donkeys years. My dog (a spaniel) my DH and our baby are staying here too obviously...

Yesterday my mum was having a quote from a builder for some windows and he seemed genuinely terrified of the dogs. (my mums dog, another spaniel.) so my mum popped hers in the garden and I took mine for a walk with the pram.

Looked like it was about to rain so just walked up and down our street so I could see when the builder left.

A man stormed out of his house over to me and said 'We don't allow dogs here!'

A normal street in Surrey with semi detached houses.... Not a private road or development or anything.

I pleasantly told him I'd be gone in a minute anyway as I was just waiting for a builder to leave.

He raised his voice A LOT and said again 'we Do NOT allow dogs here!!'

I pointed at my mums house and said that I lived there, and it was a public street. And that she's lived there for 40 years and has always had a dog.

He said he had been there 50 years and that dogs weren't welcome on his street.

Then his wife came out holding a small plate and said 'We do not allow dogs here!!'

It was very confusing, I continued to walk up the street and they stood there and watched me go up and down, tutting etc.

I saw the builder leave and crossed to go back to my mums and she said, be careful or I'll throw my plate at your dog.'

Genuinely baffled. As is my mum. She's walked a dog here an average of twice a day for years.

I'm a bit worried to go for a walk later.... Hmm

I think it's because when he knocked on the door, they started barking and sounded a bit bigger than they are... And axed my mum round the door if they could not be here ;)

I promise it's usually a very nice place! I used to wish I could afford to live here!

I have to take the dog for a walk... He's only been in the garden last night and this morning.

It's lunchtime too. She will almost definitely have a plate Wink

Haha totally bonkers. Well THEY may not allow dogs but fortunately the law does so they can froth themselves into a lather as much as they want. They will be reinforcing each others behaviour and therefore feel that 'everyone' agrees with them. because they only know each other

I think i am going to start walking around with a plate telling people what i will and will not allow.

Is it me or is MN full of stories of mad people. Is it the weather? Is society causing some kind of shift in reality?

PooPooInMyToes · 28/06/2012 11:44

Have your phone ready to record!

minouminou · 28/06/2012 11:52

Another one in favour of the PCSOs here, as well as using your recording function.
In the past we've had help with unpleasant and aggressive older people from the PCSOs - like a PP said, they go in gently, assess the situation and, as has been the case with us, gotten Social Services in. If, however, these people are nasty rather than unwell, they'll get a bit tougher.

Do you think they were reacting to you as well, Curious? A new face?

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 11:53

Well, I did live here a long time and I did visit often before we came to stay ...

I might take both dogs. Really blow their minds!

minouminou · 28/06/2012 11:54

If you're getting the PCOS in I wouldn't do anything to inflame the situation...these people may say you're trying to intimidate them.
Insane, I know......

minouminou · 28/06/2012 11:55

Especially with spaniels.....well known guard dogs that they are.....

ChaosTrulyReigns · 28/06/2012 11:58

I'd be walking that dog up and down the road like a relay this afternoon. Wink

PandaWatch · 28/06/2012 12:02

Spaniels are savage beasts. My one tries to inflict the slow torture of death by licking.

cakeismysaviour · 28/06/2012 12:08

Walk up and down in front of their house as much as possible. Take your mum's dog too. Borrow some other dogs too if you can. Grin

SoleSource · 28/06/2012 12:09

More out than in eh?

hecateharshpants has it spot on IMO.

minouminou · 28/06/2012 12:18

I know it's tempting to walk up and down in front of their house, but this needs dealing with now, and dealing with officially, so it's best to not give them any excuse at all to turn this around on the OP.

And THEN you can do the flaming-box-of-dogshit trick on their porch.

geegee888 · 28/06/2012 12:23

I'm just wondering now how the timid builder is going to cope if he parks his van and the mad neighbours tell him "We don't allow vans around here"...too much time on my hands!

HeartsJandJ · 28/06/2012 12:27

What is the builder going to do if he gets the job and there's another spaniel on the premises?

picnicbasketcase · 28/06/2012 12:29

Tubbs and Edward from the League of Gentlemen. It's clearly a local place for local people.

Birnamwood · 28/06/2012 12:30

Op, do you live in Royston Vasey?

Grin
Birnamwood · 28/06/2012 12:31

Ha, x post with Picnic :)

minouminou · 28/06/2012 12:31

As long as the situation doesn't end with this, we'll all be OK.....

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 12:33

I took only my dog... Walked on the other side... Nothing.

Walked back past the house and she was outside her front door WITH A CUP!

(think she was just drinking though Wink)

Gave me a death stare but didn't say anything.

Maybe dog gate is over. I'm a bit disappointed. I was getting ready to duck as a bowl was flung over my head.

OP posts:
curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 12:36

No... Not Royston Valley... Are there many plates thrown at dogs there? Grin

Ewell. Voted best place to live once by Kirsty & Phil! They must not have pets....

OP posts:
minouminou · 28/06/2012 12:39

I have to ask - are you "alternative" in any way?

I really hate myself for just typing that sentence (ex goth/rock chick here, btw), but could if you are, do you think that could have rattled their self-imposed cage?

minouminou · 28/06/2012 12:40

If you are....maybe you should swap the spaniel for a snake.....

curiousgeorgie · 28/06/2012 12:41

Nope, very ordinary.

Wearing leggings, flip flops and a blue dress from Dorothy Perkins... :)

OP posts:
minouminou · 28/06/2012 12:42

Blimey.....
They is just bonkers......
