To think they're a bunch of incompetent fucking bastards

I got home today and discovered that while i was out the Sheriffs Officers had been to my house with a court summons for next week. Apparently my housing association from 7 or 8 years ago want 750 pounds in arrears that they say i owe. I have checked my chequebook and bank statement on line and i know i paid it. What the fuck am i supposed to do? I am fuming at their horrible indecipherable legalese letter. It's too late to phone them now and i need a rant.

YANBU, sounds like they are incompetent bastards.

Take printouts of your statements and your cheque book with you to court to prove that you paid, then congratulate yourself on being able to find cheque books from 8 years ago.

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2012 21:28

You can go back 7 or 8 years online?

I think Barclays only let me go back about 6 months.

SofiaAmes · 21/06/2012 21:31

Are you sure it's not a scam?

tyler80 · 21/06/2012 21:31

You mention Sheriffs Officer so presume you're in Scotland?

I don't know whether it differs, but in England and Wales debts are statute barred after 6 years

QueenStromba · 21/06/2012 21:32

If you are in the UK then even if you hadn't paid it you would no longer be liable since a debt is only enforceable for seven years after the debt started or you last admitted that you owed the money.

LadySybildeChocolate · 21/06/2012 21:34

The statute of limitations on a debt is 6 years, Queen. It doesn't mean they can't take someone to court over it.

You need to post this in Legal, OP. Someone will be able to help you. Smile

LadySybildeChocolate · 21/06/2012 21:37

Actually, get everything together (bank statements, cheque book stubbs) and pop to see the CAB on Monday morning. I've no experience or knowledge of Scottish law, so wouldn't want to say something which isn't right. Someone in Legal may know though.

yay i got a YANBU I might print this thread and take it too and tell them Mnet said so. Will phone Advice Shop tomorrow but it's a hassle i could do without. I'm supposed to have the home visit for Ds1 starting nursery on the same day and i know which i would prefer to be doing. I'm so pissed off at them bringing their bullshit to my door. As for old chequebooks i've never been so glad to be a hoarder. I wish it was a scam then telling them to fuck right off and laughing in their faces would be an appropriate response.
and my internet is running like treacle so this has taken forever to type.
